    They did actually quench swords in olive oil, because it adds a protective layer to the blade preventing rust, and allowing the blade to flex instead of break. They use this in making Toledonese steel, which is where it’s flexible properties come from.

  • @TheSelphir

    @TheSelphir

    I mean, blacksmiths still use low flash point oil to this day for quenching. You should NEVER quench in water. Water is too good at its job, and turns into water vapor while the blade quenches, this creates a super heated steam tube inside of your quench. You do not quench in acid - you etch in acid. Etching is used in damascus blades, to oxidize an outer layer of pattern that you've pre-fused by alloying steels together. Master blacksmiths made some damn gorgeous patterns in this way

    Nowadays they quench steel in oil; acid is used after the quench to reveal patterns in a Damascus blade. You can learn more about the world of blacksmiths in the History channel show Forged in Fire, where four modern blacksmiths go head-to-head to create fully functional weapons.

    Well, damascus isn’t quenched in acid. You can either fold the steel tons of times to get the pattern out, or after you’ve quenches it oil you can try to do an acid etching. Oil is usually the way to go for quenching, cause water makes things mega hard and brittle. Just depends on the tools.

    Well technically the quenching method depends on what steel you're using, some steels must be quenched in water like W1 steel, but others are quenched in oil like 5160. Acid is only to bring out the pattern in folded steel.

    You don't quench in acid. It's still oil. Water cools the material too fast which causes it to be excessively brittle. Cooling rate of oil is lower so it turns out nice and hard but won't snap or shatter.

    I like how in this same video Ben goes from "Rythian shot near a barrel that was close to me, his murder was entirely justified." immediately to "You can't blame a man for barrel killing."

    "quenched them in acid" they still quench them in oil, motor, vegetable whatever depending on what you can afford or prefer. Acid is used for etching a blade that uses multiple metals known as Damascus .

    Damascus refers to a method of making higher quality blade steel before they could make high quality spring steel like they have today. Not a type of metal, or a type of blade. That acid etching that you speak of was not real Damascus steel but a process to trick people into buying inferior quality metal, or for looks.

    Zoey as an infected is op! She's very small, no longer has the weakness of not being able to jump over slightly taller obstacles, and she already wasn't capable of any thoughts higher than smacking other people to death.

    I can actually confirm that the mole people and John Quincy Adams was a thing, athough I don't believe he wanted to dedicate his 2nd term to it. He also regularly skinny dipped and owned a pet alligator. I've talked about this before on a colony survival episode.

    so for those interested instea of bein Sjin facted, no smith would quench a sword in blood as it would be more expensive and possibly harmful to the blade itself and obviously the stabbing it into their spine part is bollocks as well as the sword wouldn't have proper hardness yet and would warp the blade. It could still be done but it would be more reliable to quench in oil or water. a real history fun fact is that many smiths believe you should point your quench towards magnetic north to cut down on warping during the quench.
