Creating the Caribbean -- The Colonial West Indies, pt. 1, 1496-1697

Музыка

How did a chain of sparsely populated islands, stalked by earthquakes, hurricanes, and deadly tropical diseases, become the most powerful and prosperous colonies on earth? We trace how bands of adventurers, including pirates and Crusader knights, took advantage of Spain's fragile hold on the Caribbean islands, superior seafaring skills, and the growing slave trade, to build unlikely new societies, while the Irish and African laborers that they forced into service adapted or struck out for freedom.

Amazing and comprehensive treatment of a tangled web of peoples, competitive world powers, islands and the politics surrounding their fascinating histories and how they have come to be what they are in this day and age. This history has been neglected in may general histories of the Caribbean (especially English), given that it was such a complicated and tumultuous period, with so much erupting simultaneously on Continental Europe during the Age of Colonization. Great lecture! Thanks

Great talk! I've been researching my ancestors in the Virgin Islands and I was shocked to trace back well into the 18th century! The Virgin Islands are rather complex but extremely fascinating. Starting from 1493 Spain 🇪🇸, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, The Netherlands 🇳🇱, Denmark 🇩🇰, and France 🇫🇷 were all there at the same time with the addition of Pirates 🏴‍☠️ and then the USA 🇺🇸 🤯

I'll find your Patreon. This was great. Would you ever talk about the history of human rights? I thought it was interesting you spoke about the ambiguity of the rights of slaves just before the slave trade really got going (ie before more specific laws limiting slaves' freedoms came into effect). I am particularly intrigued by your breadth of knowledge regarding life in the middle ages.

Thank you and I am so glad you like it! I think others have also mentioned human rights, so I think I should add that to the queue. Any support is greatly appreciated, I am currently hovering right at 100 patrons. www.patreon.com/user?u=5530632

Ok, I thought I could wait until I finished the video to leave this comment, but this is eating at me. What language is the opening song in? Is that Yiddish? (Or actually, what is the song?)

Your facts are extremely wrong. I studied history of the carribean and none of which you have stated is fact. HAITI was the number one island in the carribean because it had so much gold and it was the leading island for exporting sugar. Dont speak on history you dont know

Haiti occupies the western side of the island of Hispaniola. Before 1697, it was part of the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo. Between 1697 and 1804, it was a French colony called Saint Domingue. It won independence in 1804 and took up the name Haiti. This particular lecture only covers the era up to 1697.
