Creating glass typography in Photoshop and Illustrator in 3 minutes
Photoshop’s Displacement Distort filter can be a pretty powerful tool in achieving realistic results for your graphic design projects. My favourite way to use it is for creating glass typography. Together with the power of Illustrator’s 3D tool this comes in handy for generating cool typographic posters.
(Feel free to pause and playback if the video too fast. Originally tutorial was intended for 90 sec playback)
Hope you enjoy this tutorial and I’d love to see your artworks using this technique.

Wow!!! It really helped that you uploaded the longer version here. I tried to repeat the steps from your instagram reel, but I didn't notice the step where you turned down the fill for the "server" in Photoshop from 100% to 0%, before you started to create the inner shadows and that's what I missed... And all the time I couldn't figure out why your letters were so see-through and mine were black hahaha I was still able to achieve some nice glass effects, but I'm going to try it again. Thank you for that cool tutorial!!! 😍

That was cool man thx. Can you explain why do you add and delete the black layer? I lost you there
@naturetonyx
Ай бұрын
thanks 🙏 if you mean the part on 2:08 - it's just a quickest way to set the displacement mask to be the same dimensions as your original comp. Black layer (or any other colour) is a dimension setter, you should get rid of it after 👍 hope that helps
when you post it into photoshop, you do it as a smart object? as my text isn't editing like yours
@naturetonyx
9 ай бұрын
If you mean the 3d 'SERVER' text brought in from Illustrator, then yes. It's better to keep in as a Smart Object as it allows you to go back and forth with any additional amends. Also if you want, you could keep text live before applying 3d and Materials to it. It doesn't have to be 'Expanded'. Let me know if it works
Can you explain what was the purpose of the black layer and turning everything into a smart object at 2:06?
@naturetonyx
7 ай бұрын
Sure, thanks for asking: 1. If you look at my layers you'll see that my background at that time consisted of Colour Fill (which does not keep canvas size/proportions), so painting a New Layer black, automatically set's it to be the same size as my canvas proportions. Think of it as a concrete upon which the whole structure stands on. (BTW you can create that New Layer at the beginning, I've just forgotten it at first) 2. Turning everything into a Smart Object allows you unify all the Layers in to ONE composition to be able to apply the Distortion Mask effect to. You can also unify all by pressing CMD+E but you won't be able to tweak distortion preferences after that. Hope that helps.
Idk if it's my computer, but when I go to make the 3d typography in illustrator, it looks blurred and the edges loose sharpness, so when I paste it to ps it looks the same :((

Try doing the following things: 1. set the 3d type to be minimum 250px per a letter. 2. Go to Effects > Document Raster Effect Settings > Set resolution to 300ppi minimum 3. When Rendering make sure you click High in Quality options. Hope it helps 👍

Hello. At 2:36 when I click on my mask psd file and click open the glass distortion effect is added but it has no effect on my type underneath. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks!
@naturetonyx

run through the process once again, double check the settings of the distortion mask is in high contrast BW (saved as psd), make sure you've made the selection of the type on the layer you want that effect to apply. Try tweaking the distortion settings from low to very high. Make sure your distortion mask file set to the same size as your composition file.

@@naturetonyx tutorials should never be sized to the screen of an iphone, it's impossible to understand the full context of what you're doing - if you're sharing to reels for promotion purposes, awesome, but i didn't realize it was cropped and cutting out important steps until i couldnt move forward any further. another big hiccup for me was the lack of distinction between photoshop and illustrator, you kinda just jumped into illustrator, which looks very similar to photoshop, so it was like wait, what menu is he on now? haha. dont mean to give you a hard time but when somebody is following what youre saying step by step it's essential to show them everything (as dumbed down as possible) and not glaze over things like people already know what you're doing.
