Oh boy, today's video is gonna need some explaining. So after the vast majority of you wanted me to install the copy of Server 2003 that Zilch sent me, I came up with an idea to make it more challenging. We're going to install VirtualBox on my Asustor NAS to set up a file server on a file server. Let's see what I get myself into...

you 50mb vvirtual hardisk reminds me so much of the first semester... we had our final practical exam in operating systems basics... a girl resized the C drive to 50 mb and not 50 gb... she realised it after 2,5 hours in when she restarted her pc.... i felt really bad for her
The OOBE of Server 2003 that you mentioned in 22:49 is in fact a fanmade concept. The video of the robots assembling the Windows logo is officially from Microsoft, but the whole OOBE concept was put together by someone else. :D

In the end, you did not only access the file server inside the file server, but you did it from a VM inside instead of the main OS in your main PC. I'm digging the layers!
Oh boy, removing the menu bar of VirtualBox, and then not knowing how to restore it... it's classic, it has happened at me as well.
Haven't watched the whole video yet but I see you created a 50 mb disk (I'm at 9:04 ) instead of a 50 GB disk-starting back up to watch the fun-I love that you make mistakes just like the rest of us and overcome them. Makes your videos that much more relatable.
The robots assembling the Windows Server 2003 logo was an advertisment. Many people actually rip the ending part and claim it was the startup sound for the UK.
the shortcut for the menu bar is [host]+home (to clarify it opens a right-click menu that shows the same as the menu bar)

Michael you're an absolute mad lad. This beats your previous video of installing previous Windows versions in each VM's own VM. I love it.
I am glad you show when things during the set up do not go perfect, it helps others if they have problems. By the way another great video, the content is fantastic.

12:00 minutes in and I'm all in right now trying to figure out why it's not working along with you... also, if you need to rerun a command with sudo, you can just type sudo !! to rerun the last command without having to retype the whole thing. Obviously that was a short one, but it comes in handy when working with longer ones. EDIT: Well I guess I should have just waited a few more seconds until you figured it out, lol
The animation discussed around 23:20 (found here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmiLx6athrLYntY.html) likely wasn't part of any planned OOBE for Server 2003, but instead seems to be either a fan animation, or something Microsoft made for promotional purposes. This video is also where the "startup sound" that floats around KZread comes from.
i was so happy when you checked that box to finally show that menu bar
It wouldn't be a Michael MJD video without at least SOMETHING going wrong.
'MJDness' love that!!! :)
Maybe use the 2003 file server to access different files from the older machines when needed and leave the normal file server for the current machines like your host computer?
@procta2343
Жыл бұрын
i think this maybe the last server OS to still support windows 95 machines sort of speak, but you need the active directory client installed on the windows 95/98 machines, off windows 2000 server. as i pretty sure this wont have the support add on,
Your menu bar sidequest was so funny I had to watch it twice I love watching you fail But even more I love watching you keep going Also the double file server is a weird flex
Great video Michael, Keep it up!
As a former IT tech, I have hours and hours of screentime on Server 2003 Enterprise and also SBS... great memories!
yay! another mjd video. this one is gonna be good!
I think Micheal has been watching some Druga1 XD we are just missing some SSDs
23:32 This is where my old discovery of a glitch to disable Control-Alt-Delete came in really handy decades ago. I made a video showing how it is done. The downside is that the *host* must be no newer than XP or 2003, though.
Welcome back, MJD!
This one of the best tech channels on KZread
That "is no point" is the very thing that i love to see on this channel :))))(
Nice video hope you reach 1 mill someday!
Great installation video.
( 13:35 ) I'm very sure it's because their Portal shell is designed for use on a TV. As I suspected, checking their website, some models include a remote control! ( 16:50 ) ASUSTOR forgot to include a window manager that would mimic the look of ADM, which they could possibly do by modifying something like Openbox, IceWM, FVWM, JWM, Blackbox, or Fluxbox. ( 20:19 ) No, that's the TightVNC Client cursor, which can be disabled.
So funny... But so frustrating xD I basically screamed host+delete when you were trying to open a session for 5 minutes
I don't even know what's going on, I'm just here cuz this dude is hilarious
Awesome video, Michael!
Not a MJD video without some MJDNESS
I read the title and my brain stopped working for a few seconds. Still a nice video as always.
Aww nice, another one of Michael's videos! Time to snack!
I actually still actively use Server 2003 for a company-specific internal file sharing thing. It supports the older machines on the (isolated) local network. Good fun to visit these sometimes!

@bluein_

@@Soulfur When I got my job back in 2013, they told me that its been up since 2007. On my first week i sat down and figured out everything it does because I felt like it'd give me a lot of headaches if I let it be. And boy was I right. I probably should not get into what it does because its identifying info, but loosely speaking it handles the older databases and also lets us easily move files between them as well, among other uses.

For reference if anyone gets lost here: Host + Del (Right ctrl + Delete) To enable the menu bar, go to Settings and click User Interface, and enable the check box next to the right of the menu bar.
The asustor seems like "a sus tor"
There are vintage computer reasons to do that such as winxp LAN gaming _(because plenty mboards have xp drivers, even an fx8350 capable board or so)_ and then you can deploy (and create) hdd/ssd images to the multiple client machines and in a windows specific way (restore points too etc.). That "specific" set of ways cannot be done without mswindows server (basically 2003). BSD and linux _(albeit more powerful in different ways now),_ for this, is bruteforce workarounds and snapshots etc. as in not the windows way if it is desired (which to some, it is).
“Micheal MJD - Just Because” sounds like a killer album!
This is oddly satisfying to me

This video was amazing
Well "Happy PR0formance Week" Michael 🎉🎊😜
You’re basically breaking the walls between the NAS and Virtual machine XD That’s hilarious
MJDness is basically doing things the hard way in a manner where Michael's law would apply- Nothings goes properly the first time.
"Dog two is open!!" "We are definitely in business!!"
You can show the title bar in the settings screen when the vm is close. Going into the Interface menu there is a check box.
Another Video, this has to be entertaining ;) Love this content

You could press ctrl + home to show the title bar as a navigable sub menu style and ctrl + a for the power options and for other shortcuts you can go on the preferences of virtual box

Very cool
Loch Ness's time is over, now its time for MJDness
Back in the day, there was a tutorial online on how to turn Win2k3 into a workstation OS. I did it, and it was actually faster and more reliable than XP. That was when I feel in love with Windows 2003. To this day, I look back at that OS with nostalgia. I was mostly did gaming, and everything as far as I can remember ran smooth as butter.

Alternate title: Michael uses Windows Server 2003 Enterprise with a touch of MJDness to make a file server on a Linux-based Virtualbox-supported Asuter NAS
Just a tip in-case you didn't know. When you forgot to type sudo for a command, you could have just typed !! to run the last command again, but as sudo, instead of retyping it all!
I think first Michael was replacing the NAS's OS itself but this also can be called as "file system server-ception" :D
If you pressed the left ctrl I'd just work, no problem, 50mb, well, yeah.. MJD, I have had a good laugh, thanks! 😅
