Creating a Well-Rounded Horse (from Arena, to Trail, to Town)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You may recognize a few faces in this episode! Today, we are helping our horses become more well-rounded by introducing them to some new places. We cover a variety of topics along the way, including jigging, loping, traffic, spins, and stops.
TIPS FOR RIDING YOUR HORSE IN NEW PLACES:
- Be an ACTIVE RIDER, not just a passenger. You want to have control of speed and direction at all times.
- No matter how perfect your horse was at the moment you bought him, HE WILL MAKE MISTAKES, and his training will have ups and downs.
- If your horse gets antsy in traffic, the most important thing you can do is CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS. You may also turn and face the traffic (at a safe distance, of course), and when the traffic passes you, allow your horse to "chase" the traffic away.
- If your horse tends to be jiggy on the trail and wants to head home, get in the habit of WORKING YOUR HORSE AT THE BARN when you get back. Don't just put him up right away. Pretty soon he won't be in such a hurry to get back.
- HAVE FUN. Always remember this is why you are out in the first place. To enjoy your horses with your friends and family.
INNOVATION
Today's ride reminds me that INNOVATION is important in horsemanship (and in life in general). Sometimes we get so ingrained in our habits we become afraid of change. Pretty soon, anything new will scare us. But without trying anything new, we can't grow. Innovation is being willing to adapt and try something new. Innovation will ensure that you and your horses continue to progress to the next level.
Until next time, may God bless the trails you ride,

Where are you located? No such thing as an available/free arena where I'm at.
