Creating a Visual Art Maker Space in a Rural Community | Daniel Hidalgo | TEDxIdahoFalls

The very notion of a "Maker Space" for the visual arts is an audacious one, but nobody would ever dream of building one in a tiny rural community amid the potato fields of Idaho, right? Enter Daniel Hidalgo, who with his wife, Kara, did just that, building the Idaho Art Lab, the largest such maker space in the state. Daniel’s passion for bringing access to the arts shines through as he reminds us all that if you never have the chance to explore art, how will you know if you’re good at it? Along the way, he shows us how the audacity of the dream does more than bring art to a small, rural community; it helps serve to unite the community, and touch lives in profound ways far beyond just the canvas and the brush. Daniel Hidalgo has been finding the inspiration for his artwork in the quiet stillness of Yellowstone’s wondrous landscapes for many years. Daniel and his wife founded the Idaho Art Lab in 2011, Idaho’s largest visual art makerspace. Daniel is the Director of Education at Idaho Art Lab, where he teaches painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery, lapidary and lost wax metal casting and leads weekly plein air field trips. He also creates hand-carved block images printed on paper made from bison dung, along with his business partner at Dung & Dunger Paper Arts Studio. He has been a guest artist of the Yellowstone General Stores for over a decade, and an instructor for plein air painting for Yellowstone Forever Institute. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The Art Lab gave my son confidence in himself that we couldn't find anywhere else. We will be forever grateful for them! ♥

I’m glad to have donated my time, it’s all worth it. My son won an Art challenge thanks to our mentors Daniel and Kara. Because of the Art Lab being at an outdoor expo Carlos was able to fly a plane and he’s now a Senior Airmen with Civil Air Patrol. Life is about connections. One thing leads to another and another and Ahaaa! moments come. Dreams do come true especially with our friends Daniel and Kara.
