You only need to walk into most tackle shops to see that 'carp tackle' is where the money is made. Having said that, recent research has suggested that tench are in fact the most 'popular' fish amongst anglers... Here in Essex, not exactly a 'hotbed' as far as tench fisheries is concerned, but some angling clubs hereabouts are beginning to 'see the light' and stock more waters with tench, rather than solely concentrating on the percieved need for yet more carp... I wonder, if perhaps some tackle manufacturers will begin to see the growing market, for more tackle designed wih tench in mind ie: rods, reels, landing nets, fish care & retention gear. I use rods for tench that are described as for 'light barbel' the rest is usually 'scaled down' carp gear... Peter's very nice and skillful 'conversion' of a carp retainer for tench fishing was probably beyond most of us, but wouldn't we love the chance to walk into a tackle shop and find something similar on the shelves?... We're spoiled for 'terminal tackle' these days, but some more quality tench hardware from an innovative tackle manufacturer would be wonderful...

Drennan & Shimano used to have dedicated Tench/Bream (ledger!) rods in their ranges until recently, the only one that comes to mind at the moment is Free Spirit (but as I'm in Ireland I don't have exposure to all the brands)

Yes, I have a pair of the original Drennan Specialist (11ft. 1 1/4 lb t.c.) rods, that I bought back in 1990 (I think!), they're lovely rods, but you're a bit 'under powered' in weedy, snaggy conditions using them... As you say, 'Free Spirit' do some lovely rods too. You can get beautifully built rods at 'Johnson Ross', 'The Tackle Box' and other good tackle shops, but it would be good to have other 'tench tackle' items freely available...

I had a 12ft Specialist myself many moons ago, lovely rod but as you say under-powered for weedy waters. My current favourites happen to be another set of Carp rods, Daiwa Amorphous 11'6" 1½lb but I feel guilty chucking feeders on such lovely rods, I usually only use them for close-in work.
