I used this technique to build a fake faux fireplace 5.5 feet tall and 5 feet wide with cardboard boxes! Honestly Its turning out amazing! I live in an old brownstone in NYC and it pairs perfectly with my apartment. Thank you sooo much. I'm going to send photos once its completely done. It took me 4 days so far to build the base with the boxes and essentially tape everything together. I laid out my tape and then put the joint compound over it. Then removed the tape and now I'm going in with a second coat of Joint compound and then using your technique to make it look old and rustic and I'll paint it while its simi wet as well. Thanks for the help!

I’ve seen so many of these faux-brick tutorials using this exact method but yours is the only one whose finished product actually looks like authentic brick. This is absolutely gorgeous. Your brick doesn’t just look like the standard brick wall either. It looks like the bricks have been there for ages. I can’t even begin to express how impressed I am. Your painting skills took it to the next level. I’m so inspired now. I have to try this. Thanks!

I agree this is one of the better ones. As she stated and I fully agree, its all about layering, stippling, and multipe different colors. With colors, 90% of people walk in the store and say "I need red." Or pick out a can of a "valentine's day red" haha or something, and coat the wall, haha. If you heard too, dont keeo the perfect right angels. or sharp lines, Brick is never that. Anyway, just a passing message, I am doing a wall for client and thought I would check a few others jobs. Be well

I was looking for how to's on simply painting a fireplace and had the pleasure of coming across this! This is the neatest and most practical technique I have seen for faux brick! The closest I came was using a brick patterned stencil for my daughter's Barbie house that I made out of an old dresser. Clearly, this is more creative and fun! Absolutely beautiful!

This is the absolutely first time I have ever left a comment on a anything, but I really love this idea! It's totally ingenious! It's exactly the look I've been wanting and looking for. I've see quite a few other ideas and I feel yours is the most realistic and high-end looking by far. One question? I looked all over to see what dimensions I should roughly tape off, and what size painter's tape made that size of grout or morter, as well as the general dimensions of the bricks themselves? Lastly, it looks like there may have been spots where some of the bricks were taped off smaller than the others, some of them 2 in a row. I like that, it looks more realistic as bricks are never exact copies and they break, chip, etc. Was this intentional then, and if so how did you decide where to put them? Thank you for taking the time to post. This video was very inspirational and made my day when I found it!

I love this, however i want to create the same look on my real brick garden wall which i have ruined painting terracotta. So now you cannot see the pointing in the brick as i had painted over it in one colour. How can i create the end finished look but over real brick, bearing in mind i shall have to paint all over the real brick wall with a base colour, i am right in thinking i need to do this in a motor colour, then add a bit of real motor over the brick and soften some of my corners as i like this effect, and then do the paint effect over the bricks with the different colours? hope you can advise?

just browsed tom brady's house and the entry brick in this was identical to a room . good enough to be installed on the most prominent wall in the house.

+omegapointil I have done this wall in my kitchen and family room. Yes, I think it looks good enough to put in a prominent room too. I love exposed brick! Thanks for the nice comment.

love this ! I can't believe now good it looks. I can actually do this? Is that some kind of drywall tape? What kund of compound did you use?

This is spectacular! I love it! I've been wanting to achieve the faux brick look without spending a lot of money! this seems to be the best way to go, but I do have a question. Initially, I was going to use foam because I needed to cover a hole where a 40 year old AC unit was, if I use plywood to level the surfaces, do you think your technique will blend that with the rest of the wall? also... the wall I want to do this to was 70's paneling that was covered with textured wall paper... should I do a layer of joint compound before doing this? or will it look okay with the texture underneath? Thanks!

I think whatever you can do to have texture underneath is really good because it will be varied like mortar so the wallpaper is a bonus in my opinion. The more texture the better! I think the wood over the whole is a good idea. The mud is really easy to mold and work with but you just have to let it dry if you are using a lot. You just have to play with it. Good luck!

Wow, this looks great! I love the coloring! I plan on doing this in my boys room with some industrial shelving and desk!! So, I truly appreciate your easy to follow tutorial. Quick question, is there some rough measurements for the "bricks"...mainly, how far apart for the horizontal tape? thanks again!

Hi Stacy, I just eyeballed it. I think it looks better and not as perfect but I'm sure there is an exact measurement for bricks on google. Thanks for the nice comment!

What bonding agent did your utube contractor apply to the wall before the mud was applied so it won’t fail? Weld Crete by Larson? The best agent ever made.

Unbelievable, this is the most amazing thing I've ever seen! How did you get the tape off ! Was it masking tape? Super job. You'd never know it was faux. Great job TFS Debbie

This looks amazing! I have a wall in the middle of my house that can be seen from both adjoining rooms and I plan to use your tutorial to get it done. Thank you for adding the colors as well. My question is this: I will be starting with a red wall (remember the red accent wall everyone had). Should I paint the entire wall the grout color prior to applying the tape or fill it in as I go? I know that covering the red will be time consuming if I start with painting first but want a wall as beautiful as yours.

mrLocoLogan thank you for the nice comment. I would paint the wall prior to making the paint template. It will be easier if you don't have to fill in that color. Good luck with your project😄

mrLocoLogan I would paint the red wall first. You don't have to do a great job because you will be going over it but at least you won't have to fill everything in which can be time consuming. Thanks for the kind words😄

This is really cool but there would never be that much mortar between real blocks. Try 1/2 inch tape.

I dunno. I like the larger mortar. Maybe not for a brick house...
