Creating a Custom Landscape for Stellarium

Ғылым және технология

Do you use Stellarium to plan your Astrophotography / Astronomy sessions? How cool would it be if it showed you when objects are visible from your specific viewing site?! ....When does Andromeda rise above my hedge? What time will Orion go behind by neighbour's house? This tutorial shows you how to find out by creating your own custom landscape for Stellarium using just your smartphone and a tripod, and a bit of Photoshop editing.

EQUIPMENT :
Tripod : Novo Explora T20
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Tripod Mount for Smartphone : ULANZI ST-04
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
SOFTWARE :
Stellarium : See stellarium.org/landscapes.html
Adobe Photoshop
TECHNICAL DATA :
Text for landscape.ini file :
[landscape]
name = MyHome
author = Martin
description = Back Garden, Home
type = spherical
maptex = landscape.png
angle_rotatez = 0.0
[location]
planet = Earth
latitude = +55d55'55"
longitude = -1d11'11"
altitude = 20
atmospheric_extinction_coefficient = 0.27
atmospheric_temperature = 10.0
atmospheric_pressure = 1013.0
light_pollution = 7
USEFUL TIP :
If you create a landscape.txt file using a text editor like Notepad and you then try to rename it to change the extension to .ini (as needed by Stellarium) using Window Explorer, and you have the default option selected in Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions, then you will actually have renamed it landscape.ini.txt which will not work!!! Remove the the option in Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions and then you will be able to see what the actual filename really is! Then you can rename it correctly.

    Thanks Martin - I've been meaning to do this before, but it looked really hard. Actually, I've possibly found an improvement, having obsessed on this for the last few hours. If you use the app Google Street View, you can take photos from a tripod which you can extend spherically (vertical and horizontal) and it will then balance the brightness and merge the edges. Its not particularly highlighted, but there's a "share" option to then email the photo to yourself. Once done, the tweaks you suggest to get the eyeline right and make the sky transparent result in a great look (and a lot less panorama stitch marks). Thank you for the video, I have now got a very realistic view (Now....I need to chop some trees down!)

    Hi Martin, Great video - just one question - I don't think this can take account of the actual height of obstructions - as the file is a fixed no of pixels, or is it purely visual. I believe you can create a horizon file which uses the alt/az reading - so how would this interface with the landscape file?

  • @martinsastrophotography

    @martinsastrophotography

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Bill. Thanks for that. Stellarium maps the pixels in the image you generate to the celestial sphere. Best thing is to try it and see what happens. It can take a few goes to get it to work really well, but it’s worth the effort.

    Excellent and easy to follow explanation. I followed the sequence given in your video and created a zip file with my png and ini files. When I upload to Stellarium 23.3 I get the message that my landscape has been successfully loaded. The name of my landscape does not appear in the landscape list on the left, only as a blank box. My landscape is just a fuzzy blur. I have tried numerous permutations of both files but no success. Seems like there is a fault with the png but i cant determine what it might be.

    A note that might help anyone getting the error "No landscape was installed. The selected file is not a ZIP.archive or does not contain a stellarium lanscape" : Martin named his .png simply as landscape.png. If you wanted to use a more specific name, thats fine, you just make sure the .ini points to it correctly....The thing that tripped my up for a while....the .ini file MUST still be called landscape.ini , regardless of your png filename... I was trying to change the name to match my imaging site name, but that causes it to not be recognized.

    Hi Walt. You need to enter your location in latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes and seconds in the format +XXdXX'XX" where XX are numbers. There are many ways to find your location. I use Google Earth, which is free to download and install on a PC. You may need to change the units to degree/minutes/seconds rather than decimal degrees. It will give you your lat/long and altitude. Another way to find your location is to use your smartphone. Apps like Google Earth, myLocation, PS Align Pro are all able to tell you your lat/long position in degrees/minutes/seconds. There are lots of other apps that will also tell you your location. I recommend Google Earth as it gives you lat, long and altitude. I hope this helps.

    Ok. Can you please privately message me your email address. I will then email you and you can reply attaching your files. I will then try to solve it for you. Here’s how to privately message me: By clicking the username under any video, you're directed to the poster's KZread Channel. Clicking "About" and then "Send Message" directs you to a form on which you can compose and send a private message.

    As usual these instructions never work on KZread. It's always something. "error landscape not installed" keeps popping up. Keep getting Administrator issue even after editing permissions. Windows 10 is the worst to ever happen to PC.

    @@DawgcityClev Yes, email it to me. I will fix it for you and then email it back. The most common error is people not realising that Windows hides the .txt file extension when displaying the filename, so you think for file is called landscape.ini when it is actually called landscape.ini.txt which will not work!!! There is an option in Windows Explorer to hide file extensions for known file types…it needs to be turned off!

    You never say how to save that file as .ini Off to the next video to see if anyone can remember to show ever single step, no matter how trivial they think a step is. NOtepad doesn't save files to files caled ".ini"

    Save the file as a text file using Notepad. Then rename it as I indicated using Windows Explorer by right clicking on the filename, choose ‘rename’, then type the new filename (landscape.ini). Sorry if I missed a step you needed to see.

    Problem solved. When I wrote my own ini. file I used ( ) these brackets instead of these ones [ ] for landscape and location🙄
