Gouache cracks because the paint application is too thick. Personally, I like to use gouache similarly to watercolors. So I recommend using a thick paper like watercolor paper or a thick mixed media paper when using gouache. It’s one of my favorite media’s, so I hope you give it another chance.

I sometimes use it on canvas too which while it’s fun- it’s definitely easier to manage on watercolor paper lmao

You are so cute in your crazy lyrical talk and wonderous creativity. For the gouache paint it’s normally suppose to be used with watercolor paper. It’s basically a mix between acrylic and watercolor. So... yeah.

It’s also preferred if the paper is 200 g or over. Also side note the XL canson’s watercolor paper is better for gouache than regular drawing paper that is thin.

The gouache is supposed to be watered down and layered, It's kinda like a mix between watercolor and acrylics, It's more goopy so you can layer it on itself and make it opaque :)) it still looked really good!

Yeah, it did kinda frustrate me that she went into a full illustration without even looking into the material that she’s never used before lol And the kind of paper she used for it must’ve hated the water, so idk if she thought it was like acrylics and would cause less damage or what, but yeah, she misused the supply which is mildly annoying given she’s an art channel..

@@therealopaartist yup, that’s her mistake, she didn’t even test them first to see how they went down, how they felt on the brush, if the paper would take it properly, nothing. Just opened them and started using it like Acrylic even tho she knew it was gouache and therefore different. Probably the highlight of my grievance is that she insulted the art supply because of her ignorance, which is annoying since she’s an art channel with probably a big child demographic.

9:10 i love how for the drawing she is drawing to represent her is a loopy loop rainbow, and in her new art studio the mural is looping rainbows :)

I agree! I have my own Ctb2 and I get inspiration from hers.

That jelly gouache kinda hurt to watch! As soon as you said “I hadn’t watched any reviews” I knew it wasn’t going to go well because gouache is really the only medium you need to watch a tutorial to understand. It is NOT at all designed for painting in large areas; it’s utility comes with realism, where you want some blend but not to the point of watercolor, but also want a high opacity. Basically, it’s best used to fill in small areas to create a really smooth, blendy effect minus the thickness (and subsequent unevenness) of acrylic. For a good example, think of the forested background of studio ghibli’s movies. The layered, not quite watercolor look is where gouache shines. Unless you intend to switch to realism, that gouache set will most likely go unused since your preferred form of art involved a lot of large, unshaded color.

this may b a stupid question so i'm sorry but is normal gouache good for large pieces that aren't realistic or will it behave like jelly gouache?? 😓 i'm thinking to maybe try it out but don't want to waste money if i cant use it for non realism/big colourful pieces.

@@bel9033 afaik the "jelly" doesn't really referr to texture or anything rather then to the way they are packaged. So "Jelly" gouache and tubed colours should behave similar. Also I am pretty sure Moriah used the worst possible paper for the Painting which lead to cracking. You have to use Watercolour paper, thick and able to take on a lot of water. As long as you do not put gouache down as "impasto" style acrylic but a little more delicate.... And especially use proper paper it works just fine. The style Moriah used was not the problem. It was the way she just didn't know how to utilize the qualities of Gouache and the fact she didn't know what the right paper was.

I did like the jelly gouache painting at first, but after seeing the drawing in pencils it totally changed my mind. There's no comparison, it was worth doing over. Looks great now.

Gouache needs to be watered down, you basically use it like watercolour. The consistency is what helps you build up opacity using more or less water and it can also be nicely blended! Using it pure it's usually too thick :')

I think that CTB is one of the best art series' that Moriah has. I hope she continues the awesome art series' ☺️

i love gouache and i hope that she continues to practice it. its a wonderful medium. also people are commenting that you paint it like a watercolor (which is partly true) however watercolor is painted in layers and gouache is painted more like acrylics (occasional layering but more about blending at least in how i use it). i consider it the best of both worlds- watercolor and acrylic- you can reactivate it and its very opaque and its easier to layer and not reactivate the layers below i recommend searching some tutorials- i like the ones by jess chung and arleebean

@@alura4815 the cracking and the thickness was because she was painting directly from the cups- put some on a palette, add some water and do a thin layer (like watercolors), and then add details and gain opacity by using multiple layers and have them get thicker over time- miya himi gouache is pretty opaque, so although she says that it loses opaque-ness with adding water, ive found that it doesnt really----- thick gouache looks sort of like greek yogurt and keeps its shape a bit- the consistency that i like is more like milk or regular yogurt, its more flowy (sorry about the block of text)

Hi Moriah, when I got my gouache paints around a month ago I had the same problems as you. I learnt that you really do need a mixing pallet and you definitely need to add some water or it will be too thick and with crack when drying. It takes a while to find the right consistency but if you just play around with them and get used to the medium they get easier to use. If you look on KZread there are a lot of helpful tutorials of exercises you can do to get used to the paints. Hope this helped xx

You're meant to use quite a bit of water when using gouache, it's very similar to water colour in that way. The big difference is in how much you can build and layer gouache. But I understand why you wouldn't jump to that conclusion, gouache looks a lot more like acrylic and oil paint than most watercolours.

I know everyone probably tells you this all the time, but I want you to know that you are so talented and that you inspire me to make my own art work.
