Soft edges and less contrast made the ball/Death Star fade into the background. Great vid, Daniel! I'm saving this to refer back to when I begin landscape painting!

My pleasure Deepak! Your painting was one of the few that allowed me to utilize more specific depth control, since you already had a good amount of depth in your painting to begin with 🙂 ~ Daniel

You should take a trip to the mountains at least once to get an appreciation for a clear atmosphere. When we got to the 70% of the apex from the sea-level and looked back, we saw an absolutely open landscape. We could see the last 60% of our month-long walking journey. Since it was the highest mountain ridge, you could see plains over the smaller ridges. And the weather was so clear, that there was practically NO fog for ~100km ahead. We had a clear view over the little villages, rivers, lakes, lonely outposts. We even saw how frontiers of clouds sliced and carved the ground into regions of shadow and sunlight. And it was CLEAR. We weren't thinking "God, if only there was fog to create a focal point for a photo." No, we all thought: "God damn! Why didn't we bring a telescope? We want to look into every single nook and cranny of this vastness for hours!" And I think Anthony's and Deepak's paintings captured that feeling very well. You can even feel the gusts of fresh morning air and hot sun on your back, just by looking at their landscapes. But the moment you added mist, those feelings of vastness, clarity and warmth got replaced by the senses of coldness and confusion.

Definitely! This is why I clarified at 8:55 "Now please, don't go putting fog all over your paintings." Up in the mountains sometimes the air is clear and you can see for miles. Again, the whole idea of this video is that you can toggle each of the three things to get the effect you want, and you don't have to use all three! For example, you could create the effect of depth by having your mountains turn to a relatively vivid blue on a cloudless day with no value or edge adjustments. The result would be an impression of depth by color alone, without any lightened values or soft edges (no fog). Or maybe you intentionally choose to put the highest contrast in values and colors and even the sharpest edges at the highest, furthest mountain range.... The goal of this video is to equip you with the "rules" (the cause and effects) of atmospheric depth so that you can use them (or not use them) for your purposes. In the words of Picasso, "learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." In this video I used the paintings of others to illustrate my points, which limits my flexibility to create atmospheric depth in more subtle, perhaps elegant ways (such as making my own landscape oil painting). In order to visually show people the difference these tools make, it was necessary to make simple, more drastic changes rather than a thousand small changes (which would have required me to completely overhaul the paintings I'm critiquing in this video). So, using all 3 tools for a "fog-like effect" was an easy way to do show the objective impact of atmospheric depth - but it's certainly not necessary, and certainly not always recommended. And, it's important to note that creating depth doesn't always make a painting more beautiful! So it comes back to the artist's intent, being equipped with the tools to carry out their intent in the way they want. Hopefully that puts us back on the same page :) thanks for highlighting this! ~ Daniel
