I don't think it is the right method of teaching to give absolute values and absolute rules in issues concerning design. Everything including design is subjective. The settings you choose depend on your purposes, what your client needs and the type of look you're going for. You can absolutely place lights in front of your subject and get a cinematic look if you know what you're doing.
