With the somewhat overzealous UK laws I just made one using a 30mm cork ball instead of a steel ball. Had to make six passes instead of five because of the larger circumference of the cork ball. Turned out beautifully. Thank you for posting this this jig-less instruction!

First time i saw monkey fist was on ship ,a small rope is attached to it and you throw it overboard ,a guy catches it and pulls a big rope that is attached to a small one . Its used that way because it would be clumsy to throw big rope especially if it has steel cable in it.

Important note for anyone intending to use one of these as a weapon….. Most all state statutes classify a “slung shot” as a prohibited weapon to carry. A monkey’s fist is exactly what is meant by a slung shot… A “shot” in this case originally meant a naval round of “canister” or “grapeshot” meant to be fired from cannon. They were commonly made up and used by sailors… As weapons.

@@Amira_Phoenix A “slung shot”, which is what this video illustrates, is a weight tied up in a “monkey’s fist” knot and used as a cosh or blackjack. A “slingshot” is the thing beloved by schoolboys (and some of us adults) which uses rubber bands to propel a projectile of some kind.

After a couple minutes of 'Google' research, I found that most ball bearings are “case hardened”, allowing the core to retain elasticity under load. Using a pair of vise-grips or a vice, you could grind a small flat spot onto the ball bearing. Clamping it into a drill press vice, you could (slowly) drill a 3/16" hole through the ball bearing - and then drill a 1/4" - 5/16" hole about halfway though. Your impact tool could then be simply suspended by a single length of paracord - thereby eliminating the need to wrap the ball in a monkey-fist knot... When you're done, it would be kinda like 'half' a set of Begleri beads - and you would be able to strike much harder surfaces with the bare steel ball without the worry of damaging the Monkey Fist. Wondering (also) if the 1" bearing was heated to red hot with a propane torch and then allowed to air-cool, it would then be 'annealed' - making it softer and easier to drill through. Then, after all the drilling, de-burring and chamfering were completed, it could then be heated to red-hot again and quickly quenched to again harden the steel. The different colors you could obtain on the ball itself from heating and quenching might make a good contrast of colors with different colors of paracord. You could also use larger diameter paracord for the lanyard. I also wonder - although not recommended because of safety issues - You could actually make them into an abnormally large set of Begleri Beads and play with them like vintage 'Clackers'. Anyway - Those are 'my' BB-In-A-Can runaway thoughts after watching this recent content - Thank you, for sharing! 👊

Jesus!! That is not the point at all. It's about creativity and art, learning to weave the cord into a traditional knot. Threading a steel ball on a bit of cord is pointless, ugly looking in comparison, bound to snap the cord and your theory of annealing and then heat treating is quite puerile. Quickly quenching makes it fragile! Try searching for martensite. More learning, less weed.

  • @dawabbitt3079

@@elmodiddly The point is that the TITLE describes this as an IMPACT tool. And although I forgot to mention sticking it in an oven afterwards for a couple of hours, the heat-treating would increase the ball bearing resiliency to HARD impacts. Wasn't a requirement, just a suggestion. The ONLY reason to wrap a ball bearing in a monkey-fist knot was so you could attach a cord to it, but I offered an alternative means. So please refrain from using the Lord's name in vain on a Sunday and pop a Midol or two.

@@defectiveparts8604 haha, true about Wikipedia, but I was only consulting it for general information, not legal advice. I'm not disagreeing with you, but do you have a link to reputable legal document or webpage or source that clearly states where the monkey's fist is legal and where it is not? I've always struggled to find a straight answer about the legality of the monkey's fist in the USA. And for all I know... you could be a rock 😂 EDIT: Also the States I mentioned were the ones that are ILLEGAL, your statement leads me to believe you read that as LEGAL.

@@TheWeaversofEternity 😮‍💨 Probably shouldn't sell something you're unsure on the legality of, but as a geologist I do rock, thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately in comparison to your daily habits, I do read, and I am not in the habit of repeating my perfectly coherent responses to illiterate trolls.

@@defectiveparts8604 I think we got off on the wrong foot. I am not disagreeing with you at all nor did I intend to offend you. I was just making a joke playing off your "rock" comment. All I was simply asking was some cited information. Your response is more than coherent and I fully understand it. However, if you aren't providing or linking me to a reputable information source, you're basically telling me to take your word for it. That's all I meant, no trolling or sarcasm intended.

If you're referring to the orange rope, it's 550 paracord, a type of rope that can be used for utility and crafting.
