Creality Scan Otter Vs Raptor - Black and Metallic Object

Here's my comparison review of these 2 scanners with black, glossy and metallic object.
Raptor is scanned in laser mode
Otter is scanned in NIR small object dept camera

I’d love to see a comparison between the NIR scanning on both scanners. Thank you so much for this great content. I’m trying to decide which scanner to buy at the moment. 🇦🇺😎🤜🏼🤛🏼☮️🍀

Raptors NIR isn’t good with black stuff. Highest resolution is 0.2mm when calculating point cloud. I don’t think I will use the NIR scanning a lot with the raptor. Edit: I tried a couple other black objects and the Raptor can scan black but it’s a little awkward with the scanning settings. Marker mode isn’t really working too. Depending on the scan you can have a denser mesh too. With one of the scans I was able to select 0.1mm point cloud resolution.

After further testing (a lot) the NIR can scan black parts but the resolution isn’t good. If you scan after it’s green you can use 0.1mm for generating the point cloud. But the laser scan has much more details. The NIR is a nice add on but I don’t think I will use it for reverse engineering.

I own the Raptor for a couple days now and it can scan with high detail. But the software… to get a good scan and to stich it together I had to try a couple days to get good results. The software crashed a couple times. The fps when scanning was sometimes really slow in laser mode. I reduced the marker count and it’s better. The NIR mode didn’t worked at all and then without doing anything different it startet to work suddenly. When merging it deletes your org point cloud. Deleting stuff from point cloud sometimes didn’t get saved. I think it’s working when using the UI button and not using del on keyboard. There is no smoothing or post processing at all, no alignment to coordinate system. I really hope the software will get better with time. I had to buy a different usb 3.0 controller as well. Onboard and an older usb 3.0 controller didn’t worked with the Raptor. I would still recommend the scanner but if someone don’t own a scanner already I would say go for the Otter.

Raptor needs fast and newer PC to run, my other laptop with no dGPU doesn't even start the scan. But Otter will run on it with slower speed.

great comparison ! May I know what is causing the orange-peel surface appearence ? I do not see the same effect in the other video of yours using a spanner / wrench as the object.

It's the surface reflection that cause orange peel.

congratulations on the report! we are still too much in manual mode...I would like to buy one of these but how much effort and how many variables are needed to obtain something that is not definitive and which then still needs to be modeled...is it possible we are still at this level?

Thanks, great comparison. For next video maybe compare NIR mode in both scanners and scan something bigger? Blue laser for sure is better for small objects like on this video, but how about bigger things without markers? :)

For bigger object without marker, Otter is far more better than Raptor. The large object dept camera has a very big scanning area. Much bigger than Revopoint Range 2 and it can see black and reflective.

The NIR of the Raptor is ok but it can’t see black or shiny stuff. You have to prep the part with scanning spray for NIR scanning 90% of the time because most things you will try to scan are black or have black parts on it. 😂 It’s a pity they didn’t used the same NIR electronic as in their Otter for the Raptor. I have to correct myself here. After a lot of trial and error I can say the scanner can see black surfaces but the whole experience of scanning isn’t nice with NIR and the Raptor.

If your object is small - medium and can be put on a desk. I'd use Raptor to scan it by using external markers. Raptor's easier to scan with but take longer time swiping the scanner around.

CPU is Ryzen 9 8945H, 32 GB or RAM and GPU is RTX 4070 8 GB of VRAM. I think you should be OK with RTX 4060 laptop. I found that it has no hiccup and smooth scanning experience, same as my desktop workstation.

Raptor is not bad for the black & reflective surface. But bad for metalic surface. When you scanned a bottom part, I found lots of noise data on the metalic surface. What's your opinion ?

  • @Payo-TensileCreator

The scanned object has high contrast surface, black that absorb light and metallic that reflect light. If it's all black or all metallic (not mirror like) it would be easier for the scanners to pickup. Raptor dose a bit better in this case.

Raptor yes, it will see markers on the mat and still track, but Otter likely to see less markers and fail to track without markers on the object and it also can't track this feature less object in geometry mode.
