    Yeah back in the day people would press record and your sing the track all the way through, then go back and record doubles and such. Whenever you sing you’ll get little bits of spit and phlegm that get into your throat passage that you need to clear. It’s better to swallow it because it kinda wears out your throat doing the clearing thing like most people do it, but when you’re recording sometimes there isn’t enough time to swallow.

  • @sat-cit-ananda

    I know you wrote this two years ago, so you probably already know the answer. This is not a reverse delay effect. What you're hearing is an artifact of the tape being stored for a long period of time and the magnetic particles being transfered. Think of it as a pencil smudge which gives the illusion of hearing it before you hear it. Best I can do given my limited knowledge of physics, but having worked with tape for many years.

  • @niv-l-afadinglikeadeadstar6501

    @niv-l-afadinglikeadeadstar6501

    Ай бұрын

    EDIT: The artifact is called "print-through"; it's a consequence of them recording on tape. This video by Chaotic Good called "Reel-to-Reel Basics" talks about it at 30:33 kzread.info/dash/bejne/YnZ6udikpZrQqNY.html @@sat-cit-ananda Hi. I have become obsessed with this effect for about a year now. Radiohead "uses" it a lot and you can hear it in almost all of the stems that we have, and you can hear it clearly on the album version (so not isolated!) of Kid A (song), Motion Picture Soundtrack, Life In A Glasshouse, Hunting Bears, and I could go on and on. I have a full list of songs where you can hear it from different artists with different producers with different mixers with different engineers (rhcp, green day, nirvana, queen...), and they share the fact that it was recorded on tape. I could not find anything online, so now I'm taking my chance...I have 4 questions for you! Of course you can choose to not answer. 1) Do you know if this artifact has a proper name? This is not "reverse delay", this is not "pre-delay", this is something else and I've been calling it "Lookahead delay" or "Creep-in delay" because that's what it is: it creeps in and increases in volume before the "real attack" happens, almost as if predicting the future (that's why "Lookahead delay"...it gives the **illusion** that it predicts the future). 2) Do you happen to know a way to simulate it in a DAW? I did get pretty close using Fruity's Convolver in FL Studio, although it's a hacky way and it introduces latency / delay compensation (to give the illusion it's predicting the future!). 3) I'm also curious what do you think of this: I could understand this effect happening on vocals, maybe on other instruments as well, but it also happens for the robotic voice (Macintosh's Fred) in Radiohead's Pranoid Android. Here is the snippet of it at 9:42 ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/qH2jzI9uZ7eygs4.html ); this is an official release, this is not a DIY isolated trick! You can hear the "I may-I may-I may-I may be paranoid, but not an android". But I'm wondering if you have any idea on how was the audio recorded? I mean, if we assume it was a line-in recording, why is the "Creep-in delay" artifact present? 4) In the audio snippet of my previous question you can also hear in the background all the other instruments around the low frequency...Do you have any idea on why this happened? Like, what was the "event" that caused this? I ask because this concept of "hidden" audio is a recurring theme in Kid A (album) stems too, and they contain "early" version of songs, with different lyrics, guitar riffs and drum parts which do not appear in the released versions, etc...

    Fred This depends on the song. If the vocals are centered and the instruments pan across the stereo left to right, there are tools built in to isolate or remove vocals from a song. Otherwise most isolated tracks get ripped from rock band games
