I worked in mines for a whole career. It is a actuator float to regulate water level. Whether it triggered a pump, valve, or a drain it would react to water level maximum.

You are correct. It is an actuator buoy, possibly operating a pump. Greetings from Argentina.

Water level indicator of some sorts. Yeah, what you said. To activate a pump if levels rose too high. Would make a nice ornament if you can shine it up! Or donate it to a mining museum.

The corrosion says it was a float of some kind.

It's a float, some call them ballcocks, ballvalve, float valve, float, usually rigged upto a water inlet but its not unheard of for them being part of an overflow system, the ball is hooked up onto some sort of plug and when full will float lift the plug sending the water out under control rather than just letting the water go everywhere. It's not a mine float or a buey , not strong enough and it's made of copper. With its chain I would go with emergency overflow .

It does look like a float, It could have been for a sump or a holding pond.. Also could have been used to keep a water intake off the bottom. BTW, I am one of your New York fans appreciating your interlocking NY. Now I feel bad for the Blue Jays..

My guess would be that it was lowered down shafts to see what the level of water was at the bottom. Mot long ago float bowls in Carbuertors were made out of brass. When the ball stopped sinking, you knew you hit water, then measure the rope and you know how many feet down is not flooded.

  • @meMiner
