CRAZY driving from LAST to top - Spa - Escort RS 1600

Starting from P56 after a technical problem in the beginning of qualifying. Driver had never done a single lap in Spa, not even qualifying.

KZread is all too often the vehicle of bitter and twisted armchair experts to negatively mouth off the work of others. This is a fantastically prepared car and the driver is carving through the opposition like crazy and it's such a brilliantly entertaining video to watch, well done.

Malcom Lane-Ley. That is astonishing, that he could overhaul a field of that type and size, given that the last few were Porsche's, BMW's and the odd Capri, Was it one or two Mustang's? However, as an exponent of cars of that era - I passed my test in 1965 - there was one thing that was grating on me, about his driving. Did anyone else notice? He wasn't double declutching and thus, he wasn't heeling and toeing. That's how racing drivers did it in the old days and I think they still do? (If they haven't got flappy paddle, pre-engaged, multiple clutch sequential gearboxes.) I wasn't a racing driver, but I could heal and toe and the sound of that engine being forced up to the revs of the next gear down, was making my toes curl. Otherwise an amazing job - well done.

Very entertaining indeed. But there's a clear difference in car prep and pilot skills; all gentlemen drivers bar 1 :-) , some cars road licensed. Would be interested to know what tires are on that screamer. On slicks, laptimes around 3 min are nice, but not that impressive. By experience : can be done with a 5kg/hp (or 0,2hp/kg) car, topping out at 205km/h

Looks to me like that class of 50+ cars should have been split into at LEAST 2 groups. The escort in this video is much better on the brakes, better out of the corners and handles better in the corners than 90% of the entire field. Cars were being lapped by lap 4.... No doubt this driver knows his car well. None of these cars were even closely matched until he got up to the Mustang in about 10th place. Great driving, no doubt. It's MUCH more fun to watch a racing video of a driver passing everyone than it is to watch someone getting overtaken by car after car... lol. Thanks for sharing! Oh... one more thing... Crazy to see the Escort, ostensibly a four seat design, family car (ok the RS Twin Cams are hardly cooking pot) mullering Porsche’s, Healey 3000s Alfa, BMWs Corvette and a Caterham, blooming superb! What are the brakes on that thing, it’s epic under braking Was hoping to see it flat through the Eau Rouge and Raidillon combo, probably a bit optimistic.

Clearly everybody are driving their cars for the first time because it seems like none of the drivers knows the real capability of their car. Driver who's fillming is just willing to take more risk than the others and it might be because fixing Escort is cheaper than fixing a Porsche. Those Porsche 964s should in theory and by design be able out perform and go the corners with much higher speed than most of the cars in that track.

@- I didn't mean literaly "cheap" because non of this stuff is cheap, in case if you tought that I think that the Escort what is in the track is the same Escort what we see normaly driving in the city. We would need more details other than there is RS 1600 and Porsches are 964s. Therefore we cannot argue about this. You can have RS 1600 from 20 000€ to 100 000€ and cupé verison of 964 from 50 000€ to 200 000€ 3.6 turbo.

Amazing footage and excellent driving skills. Even if some overtaking scenes were a bit wreckless on his side; one single mistake from his competitors could have caused quite some accident. But he got away with it. Boils down to confidence I believe. But also the 1600 ccm Car is going like a bullet, even against much bigger Cars like the Porsches. So I am not so sure about it being only 1600 ccm. But nevertheless one of the most exciting driving videos here.

RS1600 is the model, its homologation back in the day was at 1601cc so it was competing in the 2 liter class as 1800 and later as 2000 with alloy block. So what we see here is 2000 as 99% of RS1600 that ever raced or rallied.

Yeah, these are the alloy 1.8L or if it had to be the compacted graphite iron 2.0L. But dithering over these differences is a null point cuz we all know the winner has the newest engine design. Also, changes occur and idk the specifics of this race, could be a 2L alloy if allowed.

It's just a difference between someone racing and some other people merely driving it. Also to anyone saying he did know the track, do you guys know the track yourselves ? He's missing about half the apex's, and often repeats other drivers' mistakes on the first laps... I wouldn't be surprised at all if that claim came true.
