Crazy bird numbers! - Quail & Partridge Opener - Season IV Episode I

Спорт

Join us for the opener of quail and partridge in Idaho. In the first part of the video we look for quail in the mountain draws, but stumble across a couple coveys of Hungarian partridge. In the second half, I'm joined by Mike and Christi where we are quite literally surrounded by quail. The combination of the number of birds, the hot weather and little to no wind made it a tough day for the dogs. The shooting opportunities were plentiful and made for an exciting hunt. Enjoy.

Definitely a love/hate relationship with valley quail. They don't leave a ton of scent, they run like pheasants, and they hold up off the ground on branches. Always an emotional roller-coaster with them

They can be tricky sometimes. You can get some excellent dog work with them at times, but it’s highly dependent on their cover and the amount of pressure they see.

Nice Rob! Thanks. Quail season starts in California the 3rd Saturday in October. Can’t wait. The terrain you found them in looks very much like where I hunt in California. Again thanks. I enjoy your channel

Nice shooting, enjoying your videos. Happy to see those numbers of birds. We saw a good number that weekend as well, but it was hot for sure. Looking like it might be a good season. I'll keep an eye out for you as it appears we're hunting a lot of the same ground. I'm out of Boise so if you ever need a partner let me know. I'm out pretty much every weekend. Thanks again for the great content. Those Britts are something to watch.

Hi, enjoying your videos. We have those quail here in New Zealand and call them Californian Quail. What is their name over there? I don't usually shoot them now as there are very few left in the areas I hunt.

The officially recognized name is “California Quail”. We commonly call them “Valley Quail”. We have a ton throughout the western US and this seems to be an excellent year for bird numbers. I’d love to come hunt in New Zealand sometime. What other species are you hunting down there?

We have Aussie brown quail up north I believe. Pheasants in shootable numbers throughout the north Island and to a lesser extent in the South Island. There are Chukar in small parts of the S.I. high country ( Hells Canyon steep). I think there are small populations of Red Leg Partridge in the lower N.I.. Mostly duck shooting in NZ with Mallards being the most common. We have Teal which are protected. Spoonbills are common in places. Black swan are common. Canada Geese are a pest and can be shot all year. We also have Paradise Shell ducks which are a native and common. They are like a cross between a goose and a duck. I call them with my goose call. We also have Peafowl (Peacocks) in the N.I. which are an introduced pest and can be shot all year. Deer here are introduced and can be shot all year.

I haven’t run into anything other than garter or bulls. We really only hunt the morning this time of year, especially if I’m in the hills. It’s definitely a concern of mine.

@@NorthwestWingshooters oh yeah. I put him through the avoidance class when he was 10 months old.hes just over 2 now and it seemed to have helped. He jumped back a split second before I heard the rattle. If you haven't put your dogs through the rattle snake avoidance class I would recommend it.
