Whatever else, he is undoubtedly a great commentator on Scottish history. I don't know of anyone else who is doing the work that he is doing. The medieval history of our country is fascinating, and this man describes it with phenomenal insightfullness. Good on him, and well done!

John, thank you so very much for this tour! Because my husband is in the line of Sir David Lindsey, the 1st Earl of Crawford, we visited several family spots in Scotland in September 2019. Crawford Castle ruins was on our list to visit, but we simply ran out of time. But, next time we will visit and you've made it so much easier to recognize the surroundings. Also, you have made me quite pleased in realizing that there are some indigenous people who are interested in their country's history. I was beginning to lose hope on that. I've come across many reddit threads on the topic of Scotland where I am chastised for celebrating my Scottish DNA. I'm told that because I do not currently live in Scotland or because I do not hold a Scottish passport that I hold no legitimate ties to Scotland. But how can they think that when my very DNA traces back to Scotland and my mother has relatives there.

Hi Pam. I’m glad enjoyed and your very welcome. This castle is extra special due to family history for you. You should definitely visit next time. It isn’t hard to find if you have access to a car. It’s a nice area and more Lindsey history near by to. Acht don’t worry about what others think on the internet. Every person in USA, Canada, Australia and NewZealand etc that isn’t descended from indigenous person has genetic link to another land. They are descended from settlers from Europe, Africa or Asia and Middle East. That’s less than 6 million people in Scotland. But there’s about 35 million people of Scottish descent in just the four nations I listed above. I’m not even counting Scot’s in England or Ireland. Everyone needs to have a history and know where they came from. They’re Scot’s here that have been trained to hate their own history and even their nation and it’s people.

Meagan - hello from Illinois. It is so very nice to be with a group like this one who celebrates their Scottish family history ties! My ties are to the Lindsays. Anyway, I don't know if you have ever experienced online threads where there are those who get downright hateful when mentioning your ties to Scotland, but I have had people get pretty nasty and tell me that I have no ties to Scotland because I do not currently live there. But, I always correct them by telling them that my DNA will never tell me that I am 89% United States (even though I live here). What my DNA tells me is that i am 89% English, with some of that being Scottish, in particular.

You have some good family history :) . Yeah that was where the Ford would have been. There would have been a crossing point on that site a long time prior to the castle and would have been an important and strategic crossing of the Clyde. There is a Roman fort just to the rear of the farm building just over 100yrds from the castle. So the romans had a crossing point there and a fort to protect it as their military road that still has visible traces near by. Some great history in that area. Your welcome Steve and I’m glad you got something from this :) cheers

Anyway I found your visual article as I like to call them lol was very interesting. If you are interested in traveling Scotland for interesting story's and places them Moray and Strathpeffer where I was born in the highlands is also interesting as it was the only Victorian spa in the highlands which makes it different from all the other towns and villages around it. They came from London and all over the world to take the waters and have the treatment, so worth a look if your interested. 😀👍

Oh Strathpeffer also has a Pictish standing stone as it was the land of the Picts long ago and has a Pictish fort at the top of the cats back a hill that stands near Strathpeffer and it has a castle which is still owned and lived in is the seat of the Clan Mackenzie, their chief ( cabarfeidh), earl of Cromartie and his family. Nothing left of the Pictish fort now but still interesting. Oh and we have a legend of the Bran sear, I dothink that's haw you spell it but lots of great stories surrounding him. One is he got his second sight from a stone with a whole in it and when they were going to kill him he threw the stone and it landed in the Hoofprints of a cow and the water ussied out of the stone and created the loch at the other side of the cats back which is now called ........ wait for it ...... Lock ussie ..... not a lot of thought went into things back then lol. Anyway I'll stop now. Cheers again.

Your very welcome David. To my knowledge it got passed about through Douglas’s, Hamilton’s and Carmichaels before being sold to a Sir George Colebrook and was dismantled to re-use the stone in late 18th Century. I’ve not heard of anything linking it to Wallace yet. But considering is closeness to lanark and also Lamington (where his wife was from) and also the fact that Wallace was operating in that area it is plausible that he was familiar at least with it. At that time it appears to have been in the hands of the Lindsay’s. If you know of any Wallace link or find any in future I’d be keen to know.
