Subaru of America, Inc. and Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit research and consumer advocacy organization, announced today the results of the 2015 Crate and Carrier Crashworthiness Studies - a collaborative initiative to examine the effectiveness and safety of pet crates and carriers in the event of a crash. After several eye-opening and informative tests - including instances of complete failure - three top products emerged; CPS has selected the Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate with 8’ Tie Down Straps as the 2015 Top Performing Crate and both the PetEgo Forma Frame Jet Set Carrier with ISOFIX-Latch Connection and Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed with PPRS Handilock as the 2015 Top Performing Carriers.

from the video, it appears that only the Gunner kennel did well and the VarioCage kennel did well and everything else failed miserably

That backs up every other conclusion I've heard. On the other hand, only one agency has actually tested, so what do we really know?

It says in the description: "After several eye-opening and informative tests - including instances of complete failure - three top products emerged; CPS has selected the Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate with 8’ Tie Down Straps as the 2015 Top Performing Crate and both the PetEgo Forma Frame Jet Set Carrier with ISOFIX-Latch Connection and Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed with PPRS Handilock as the 2015 Top Performing Carriers." However, in my honest opinion, the Variocage performed as it should have even though they made it seem like it didn't. More thorough cash tests have been done on the Variocage and it is designed with crumble zones to disperse the impact. Pictures of real accidents with the Variocage can also best found. The test they did on the Gunner Kennel was unrealistic given that it is more likely to be cinched down closer to the back hatch of the vehicle and therefore more likely to have an impact from crash which this did not simulate. Just a few things to consider. Hope this helped!

babygrl14 , this was why they failed the VarioCage, though in my view it behaved as promised. VarioCage says not to worry about the connection straps because stronger straps will likely break the car’s anchor points anyways. The connections are meant to keep the crate in the correct position for impact, not keep it from moving on impact. “The front cargo connection failed - the front cargo strap remained intact, however it tore through the metal connection point on the crate. The crate crushed (as noted in the marketing material) during impact with an average crush of 10 inches. The top and sides of the crate experienced minor deformation. The locked door retained integrity and was unlocked and opened easily. The crash test dog was retained.”

every crate and carrier have different ways of securing so this test is kind of biased honestly...all of them should all be tied down like the gunner crate, I'm sure Gunner is strong enough even for a direct impact but this test was done wrong...

@@keeper5689 I read the PDF file with great interest. Thanks for posting. From my reading of the results, the ruff-tuff was fine overall, but the front door came open allowing the dog to come fly out. The SUV slant back version performed better than the regular version. They sell a horizontal cross latch, that comes across the front door, and allows it to stay closed. I think it should come standard and not be an extra cost item. I saw they also sell a dual door version, which is a smart idea, given the fact that if you are rear ended, the rear hatch might be crushed in and you need a door on the opposite side to get your dog out. I would like to see the test repeated with the horizontal latch across the front door.
