Crash Course in the Accelerated Dragon | Standard Chess

Ойындар

The Accelerated Dragon (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6) is a durable option for Back in the Sicilian galaxy. Compared to the normal Dragon, Black may benefit from withholding ...d7-d6 in favor of the direct strike ...d7-d5. In this game, my opponent and I play into an unbalanced variation featuring a different pawn push, 8...a5. Although I'm out of book on move 11, my opponent reveals that they were out of book on move 9!

Hi John, It was an honour playing against you. 10/10 for the pronunciation of my name :) Haven't watched the full video yet, I'll try to make it more challenging next time! EDIT: Yep, I totally missed you had c3 after Qa5. It was pretty much all downhill from there.

I saw the Queen trap, but even if I saved the queen there I didn't think I had enough compensation for the exchange. So I willingly went in to that line thinking I'd able to do something with my bishop pair, but the move Nd5 ended all my hope. Going forward, I need to study the position after move 8 and have some ideas handy if I'm going to play this line again. I'm not convinced that this particular idea with a5 is good for black. It looks very comfortable in the queen side for black. Perhaps I need to find an alternative.

In the can is an old movie shooting reference. The film comes in a can and after it's exposed it goes back in the can until it is developed.

I always thought in the can was a cinema term. When a film is done and ready to send out to theaters they store them in cans to protect the film.

Thanks for the amazing perspective on facing the dreaded Dragon! As usual, you give us a super practical and playable line that helps to force the position into something we can digest and remember. You are an amazing teacher! Thanks, John for the great games and commentary!! So glad you are producing this amazing content these days.

"In the can" originates in radio and film industry. It refers to film or tape recorded previously, in a completed state, and ready for release. The can being the storage container of said film or tape.

As a 2300 rated player, the accelerated dragon is the one opening that i have the most trouble playing in so i do really appreciate the insights and opening knowledge played in this position, practically this setup looks quite good in fact.

At 31:20 my instinct to simplify is Nxe7 Nxe7 Bxd7 so you claim the bishop pair and win a pawn. I haven’t gotten to the analysis but I think it’s strong from what I was able to evaluate

It seems to me that the greatest difference between people like you and average chess players is that you remember SO MUCH MORE. Is there something you can advise on how to remember all this stuff? Is it impossible to play chess above a level without memorizing all this theory? And if yes, what is the most efficient method of doing that without becoming exclusively a chess-head?

I believe the "in the can" expression is generally used to mean that everything is wrapped up and done with. Like if you're processing something in a factory or when canning, the last step would be to seal up the can itself.
