Please like and subscribe if you like my work and want to see more, and feel free to ask in the comment section 🙂
In this video you can learn about the crankcase ventilation system and the PCV valve and what it does.
You can also see how to find it and how to change it on a Volvo V50 1.8F that has the same engine as some Mazda and Ford cars.
I could not film while I was working because it needs much work to reach this valve, while in many other cars it is much easier to reach it and change it.

    Can a broken pcv valve hose stop the engine from starting?

  • @MerohDIY

    @MerohDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    No, you can start the car also without the PCV valve at all. The PCV valve's job is to take away the extra pressure in the crankcase. A broken hose will cause some oil vapor to get out and you will have some oil close to the broken part in the hose. But if the hose is damaged by a way that it becomes closed and does not let the vapor to go out then it is not good to drive the car, otherwise there will be much pressure inside the crankcase and the gaskets can be blown.

    Hello I have some questions to you: 1. Has your engine had problems burning oil? 2. Has the PCV valve that you removed turned out to be damaged and replaced it with a new one? After this replacement, if you had a problem with oil burning before, the problem disappeared? I have a similar engine at home and I noticed when cleaning the throttle that in the intake manifold I have a lot of oil at the bottom, the engine also burns oil about 0.5l / 1000km. I am looking for a reason if the PCV valve can be responsible for it or something else? best regards

    Hello hello 🙂 Yes, this car burned about 1 liter every 150 km. I changed the PCV valve on it and nothing got better, the car had a worn engine and I think the piston rings were too bad, this could be because of that the old owner did not change the oil when it had to be changed. You can start by doing a compression test to the engine. Then if you do not find problems in the compression so continue by replacing the PCV valve. You may get good results by doing a compression test even if the piston rings are bad, this happened to this car. Regards 🙂

    Hello, I am just planning to replace the PCV valve in my 2005 V50 1.8. To remove the orange valve itself do you need to remove the whole plastic lid that the orange valve is installed to, or can you just remove the valve itself from it's socket? As far I could figure it out, some kind of clip-in mechanism keeps the valve in place, is there a chance that I can break it while removing the valve or is it made from kind of a soft plastic, so there is no risk as such? Only asking this because I don't want to order unnecessary parts for the repair. Many thanks for your answer in advance!

    Hello! Yes, you can remove the PCV valve without removing the oil separator (The big plastic thing that the PCV valve is attached to), but the part that holds the PCV valve is as you said a bit soft and can be broken, that is why you have to be careful when you remove it, otherwise you can remove the whole oil separator and then remove the PCV valve from it. You are welcome! 🙂

I have been checking both your video and Craig's DIY Car's video on removing the intake manifold, your videos have been a great help. :) I haven't gotten the manfiold off completely yet, I still have the 3 bottom/middle screws left - got any tips on how to get the one in the middle off? :D Also, at 6:53, how did you get that gray connector off of the cable? Doesn't seem like there is any flap/latch to press down on like with all the other cables. Really thankful if you could try to answer!

  • @MerohDIY

    @MerohDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    The middle bolt is a bit tricky to get off, you can use two or three small adapters together to get it off. Connect the socket to an adapter and fasten it to the bolt (Use a paper inside the socket so the bolt do not fall down), hold it with your hand, then connect a shorter adapter to the one that is already on the bolt, then connect a small wrench to the last adapter. So basically you need a few different adapters between 5 and 10 centimeters. You can also use a multi angel adapter that you can use in any angle. The gray connecter is also tricky, the cable has almost the same length as the distance, it has to have something on it that you can push and at the same time push the connector in and out few times (Use some extra power but without pulling the cable itself but pulling the gray connector) and I think you will get it off. Sorry for the late reply. You are welcome :) Good luck!

    Do u need new manifold gaskets or rubber rings when u take off and put back on?

  • @MerohDIY

    @MerohDIY

    No, you do not need new rubber gaskets if yours are good and are not leaking air. If you want to, you can change them, because the intake manifold will be already off and it will be easy to change them. Remember to clean them and to clean where they sit on the engine and on the manifold, same ones or new ones, better if they sit on a clean surface.

    This depends on how much the owner takes care of his or her car. But it can last for more than 300000 kilometers without problems if the services were done at their time. I am not sure about this but I saw some cars with this engine that came up to 300000 and were for sale. The Volvos V50, S40 and C30 that have this engine (Both the only petrol engines and the flexifuel engines that are 1.8 litre) rich almost 3000 RPM when driving at 100 km/h in 5th gear, this means that the engine will run at high RPM when driving at 120 km/h which is not so good for the engine. This engine is almost a Mazda engine that Ford used in their Ford cars and in the Volvos.

    I have S40 1.8 2006. How do I know if my PCV system are bad? What symptoms? And also the MAF-sensor if its dirty what symptoms? My car starts bad sometimes. Like if it's running on 3 cylinders with lower rpm and a little bit shaky car/chassis. Run normal when pressing gas pedal one time. When I brake rpm fluctuates when coming to a stop. Really annoying. Also my car is hesitating when letting of throttle engine braking and also with a steady speed both slow and a little bit faster its noticeable. • @MerohDIY

    Well, the PCV valve has a symptoms of burning engine oil and blueish smokey exhaust for example if it is stuck opened, if closed so you will see oil leaking around the engine. This engine has a MAF sensor and a MAP sensor maybe or a TPS (Throttle position sensor), all three may have the same symptoms. Your symptoms seem to be like a misfire, it can be caused by a faulty spark plug, a faulty ignition coil or a faulty injector, or caused by oil getting into the combustion chamber maybe. You can start by checking the spark plugs, the ignition coils and the injectors.

I have some oil leak between gearbox and engine but I've heard/seen that that are quite normal on these engine.. not great but. It will do it by age. Would be cool if the crankcase ventilation can be diagnosed. If its working properly or not. If the parts are somehow cleanable. Not thinking on the PC valve now. Just the hoses and that stuff that are easily reached without taking intake and such off. I have replaced the magnetic vacuum variable valves one time. Located on the right side of the engine

    You can find some oil on the sponge that is located near to the air filter and I think that this is okay, if the oil was too much so it may be the PCV valve or other problems. I do not work with cars but I do it as a hobby only. It is a bit expensive to check the PCV valve on this car in Sweden because it will take time to remove and install again the intake manifold. I can not recommend a specific company, buying the tools and doing it by yourself may be the cheapest option, otherwise you can visit any car mechanic that knows about this engine and ask about the cost, a car mechanic that knows about this engine because some people with companies can take your car in and start learning on it, and that is not good.
