Craig Phillips - Spray Painting Garden Fences

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Craig Phillips shows how to spray paint Garden fences. Whether you have, traditional lap fence panels, close board fence panels, wooden or concrete posts you can get the job done faster by spray painting. Over time the wood can fade so it is important to protect them and keep them looking good by giving them a fresh coat of paint or stain. Painting a fence is difficult and time-consuming with a brush, Craig shows how to complete them quickly with the WAGNER electric paint sprayer. Cleaning the surface is very important to achieve a good finish, clean off loose paint, dirt, moss or algae with a wire brush and jet wash allow it to dry for 24-48 hours prior to spraying. Sand down rough areas. If they are very weathered you will need to give them two to three coats as the wood will be very absorbent.

    I used this to paint my whole house interior. Works great for 30mins then it starts to heat up and the nozzle gets clogged because the heat dries the paint as it leaves the nozzle. I think its the friction of the air leaving the nozzle. Its really hot when you touch it. The spray speed is really powerful and cannot be adjusted. If you are in an enclosed room make sure you tape EVERYTHING down. Its like a whirlwind. The container is also too small. You need to refill it once you paint 2 walls. A typical room takes 3-4 refills if you are doing 2 coats. Other than that it works great but is best for small jobs. Might be more suitable for outdoors as shown in the video.

    Hello, Thank you, for your review of your experience so far. Many WAGNER Sprayers for example the W590 www.wagner-group.com/uk/do-it-yourself/products-and-accessories/product/universal-sprayer-w-590-flexio/ both the air flow and paint volume are fully adjustable so you can decide how much paint you want to apply and how quickly you want to cover the surface. The W590 comes with a 1300ml container for wall paint. If you do need a larger pot size there is a 1800ml version available www.wagner-group.com/uk/do-it-yourself/products-and-accessories/accessory-group/spray-attachment-wall-extra-i-spray-1800/. As paint is forced through a very small hole to create the spray, any particles in the paint can block the nozzle or cause it to spit. We would always recommend straining paint through a sieve before use. This helps avoid getting any particles which could cause blockages or spitting, particularly if the paint is not new. If you experience any further issues, please can you make contact with or support team on FMB_GBSI_Technical-Support@wagner-group.com Kind Regards the WAGNER DIY Team.

    Hello Peter, you have two options to handle the white concrete posts and gravel boards when painting your fence. You can either cover and mask them with painter’s tape and plastic sheeting, or you can remove the fence panels and spray them separately. Both methods will help you achieve a clean and professional finish. Kind Regards Wagner DIY

    Thanks Craig- you make it look very easy! My fence is shared with neighbours - does the paint drip through to other side? Nina

  • @WAGNERUnitedKingdom

    @WAGNERUnitedKingdom

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello Nina thank you for the question. Provided that there are no holes in the fence then the paint will not go through to the other side. However, if there are holes however it is painted, paint might go through. If you are spraying we would recommend holding cardboard on the other side so that the paint does not get sprayed to the other side. It is also important to only spray when there is not a lot of wind. I hope that helps. The WAGNER Team

    HI GUYS,I'm painting 180 ft of fence.I've removed all the boards and sanded them,and yes it takes days and is very dirty.THAT DIRT is what your are painting unless you power wash and let dry before paint otherwise.Nobody mentions that.they show tapeing and covering stuff ,but prep is cleaning the surface too. I used power sprayers before,and i found it was messy ,used 2x more paint and streaked and dripped more .So i had to over brush.The spray gun invention is a good one ,But it's really a trade off,TIME AND EFFORT vs quality of even coating material used and paint in the air,and over-spray.and rental or purchase of sprayer.It's a convenience,for pro's TIME IS MONEY as they say.But i can tell you 5 gallons of paint went to fast for me spraying.haha

    Hello Roberto, yes I agree preparation on any painting job is very important. Here is a video for painting fences kzread.info/dash/bejne/q3pm07JtfabFf5M.html which includes cleaning with a wire brush and jet washing. As far as the amount of paint used provided you spray it directly onto the fence you do not use anymore paint than you would do with other application methods. In fact, you can use less paint because you are applying an even layer of material across the surface. When painting with a brush you apply the paint to one area and then brush it around, so you get more coverage in some areas and less in other areas and therefore you do end up using a lot of paint. As you highlight it is all about time and effort and anyone who has done it with a brush will agree, it takes ages. Kind Regards the WAGNER DIY team.

    I have got one of these on you need to go over it with a brush again to even the paint out has the paint drips

  • @WAGNERUnitedKingdom

    @WAGNERUnitedKingdom

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello Stuart, Thank you for your feedback. If you are getting drips it is either that the material you are spraying is too thin or too much paint is being applied. You can reduce the volume of paint being applied. Please see the instruction manual for your particular machine. You also need to keep the gun moving at a consistent speed and distance from the surface to avoid drips. It is best to setup the machine and then practice on a scrap of cardboard to get the settings and your speed just right before spraying onto the final surface. If you do get drips, as you suggest you can brush then out as soon as you see them and immediately spray lightly over the brush marks to cover up the brush strokes. Kind Regards The WAGNER DIY Team

    Hello , overspray is usually caused by the atomised spray ‘ bouncing back ‘ off the object by either being too close or because the pressure is too high. To minimise this, reduce the spray pressure and keep a consistent distance between the spray gun and the surface. You should spray using your arm, not from your wrist. When you get to the end of each pass do not move your wrist as you will send the spray into the atmosphere. When spraying with the wood and metal attachment keep a distance of 5 - 15 cm. With the Wall attachment keep the distance 20-30 cm from the surface depending on the desired spray jet width. You should also release the trigger while changing direction or you will get a build-up of paint. Also do not over dilute the paint otherwise you will get runs in the paint and create more overspray. There are a series of tips and tricks for using the Wagner Flexio HVLP paint sprayers here: go.wagner-group.com/spraying-varnishes, or a trouble shooting video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX2psJaNgdqud7g.html I hope that helps. Hello Maria Yes you can use oil-based paint the procedure would be exactly the same as if you were cleaning with water which you can see here: 4:57 However, after returning the paint to the original tin if you wipe the inside of the spray attachments with an old rag or paper towel this will remove the majority of the paint. Then pour in some white spirit and spray this through into another bucket and you can then reuse that white spirit once the paint has separated to the top to clean the rest of the components. Hello there, I’ve heard horror stories of cars being covered etc. obviously this will be done on a no wind day but does the vapor still travel? Thanks.

    Hello It is important to only spray when there is not a lot of wind. The spray will only travel if it is pointed into the air and not onto a surface. I hope that helps. The WAGNER Team

    I do like the product but wouldn't recommend doing it in any wind and also the nozzle could be bigger, bit like colouring in with a pen.

    Hello, on this sprayer you have three different spray patterns, horizontal, vertical and detailed. It sounds like you might have it on the detail setting which is a small spray pattern. If you change the spray pattern to horizontal, or vertical this produces a wide oval-shaped spray pattern in either direction. We recommend practicing on a old piece of cardboard to get the spray patter which is right for you and yes we would not recommend spraying on a very windy day. Kind Regards The WAGNER DIY Team

    I did it on a 10 year old wood door (14 f * 7f) it took a full gallon on 3 coats, I think a roller would have only used 1/2 gallon!

    If its very porous material it'll take what it takes to cover with a sprayer or roller! the sprayer can apply a thinner coat of required which helps us save paint at times

    Would have been good to see how you did the harder bits around the posts and corners instead of the easy straight bits that just go up and down. Good video other than that.

    We understand Yega - these 'harder' bits are actually just as easy as the rest when it comes to spraying 👍 It's so much easier to get the paint material into gaps that a brush or roller might struggle with.

    @@tigerbalm666 It’s stain, it won’t make the fence last any longer. The emulsion on my living room wall isn’t falling off, but I still re paint it. See how your fence looks in 5 years without re spraying. However, the wood being cedar will give you a long lasting fence.
