Craig Kelly Avalanche Awareness Camp / Hakkoda Mountain, Archive film / Year 2000 by Neil Hartmann

This footage is from my personal Mini-DV tape archives. Filmed at the beginning of February in the year 2000. The location is Hakkoda Mountain in Aomori prefecture, Japan. Burton Snowboards Japan organized a week-long avalanche awareness and safety course featuring special guests John Buffery from the Canadian Avalanche Association and Burton Team rider Craig Kelly. Craig's teammate and Burton Japan rider Masanori Takeuchi was also assisting the course and the Hakkoda Guide club led by Hiroyoshi Soma were the local hosts.
The course was incredibly in-depth and detailed. Long sessions on the mountain digging pits and recording the layers and temperatures as well as beacon training. After dinner at the Hakkoda Sanso Lodge, evening debriefings were held to study the data collected and understand the theory.
As a fan of Craig Kelly at the time I found it difficult in the beginning to point my camera at him. Looking back at the footage now I am thankful that I pressed the record button as much as I did. Close to 8 hours of footage was shot during the multi-day course.
After Craig's death in 2003, I was never able to edit or present the footage. The Mini-DV tapes sat on my shelf for more than 20 years. I owe a big thank you to Paul AKA Boardersan for asking to see the footage and instigating this project. Two years ago I was able to transfer the tapes to mp4 format and begin the viewing and editing process. Another big thank you to Kumiko AKA Qoo-chan who was working for Burton Japan at the time and was integral in organizing the event and translating. She helped to create the Japanese subtitles for this film.
I hope that Craig's personality and character have been captured in the video and shown throughout the edit. His passion for all things mountain-related was amazing to see live in person and it continues to inspire me. Watching this footage brought back a lot of memories and I hope it will inspire many people from that generation of snowboarding and possibly influence a younger new generation to keep the freeriding mountain spirit of snowboarding alive and well!
I have purposely kept the edit very simple and raw. This is NOT a documentary or a memorial film it is simply outtakes from my original recordings of the event. This is a window into a moment in time that has hopefully captured the essence of Craig, snowboarding, and those around him. Enjoy.

Glad, yet sad, to see this. Craig was such a beautiful soul. The very first Snowboarder Mag I bought had pics of him on a trip to Chile. A number of the captures are etched in my mind.

Craig would hide my beacon so I’d be last on our trips…like in a tree or something. Weasel
