this is the one great thing about KZread. Big companies like Craftsman and Lowes no longer have to pay to advertise the products they sell because their customers are now willing to do their advertising for them for free! Thank you sir for the very informative video. I picked this mower up after work, looked at the chicken scratch "instructions" and said screw it I'll wait 2 days for the weekend to put it together. Then my impatience kicked in and brought me to your channel and after watching the video I got it ready to go in no time. You know. I've been researching for 3 weeks online. Looking at the lawn mowers of today because I need one before Spring gets here. I'm in Houston myself haha. And your video here confirms that I should stay with what is important to me. I'm 51 and love the Variable Speed control I had on my old Craftsman mower. It was RWD, something I will miss on this one, the M230. But the variable speed is more important than having RWD. I know they make the RWD but I hate that personal pace or thingy that just GO's at one fast speed. My old Craftsman had a lever just like the M230. I'm getting the M230 ASAP! Thank you fellow Texan!

I've had the mower for almost two years and I am still happy with it and it still cranks on the first pull! Like you I prefer the variable speed, mainly in that it is less complex than the personal pace. Just one more expensive thing to go wrong. I've also had RWD but here in ruler flat Houston, it's not as important as you know. It's been nice chatting with you neighbor. Thank's for watching the video, and "go Coogs!"

PERFECT VIDEO!!! I love this m230, my parents bought this many years ago and it has NEVER failed. I hunted down one on fb marketplace cheap, and though the previous owner bent out the blade hitting something (i have as well), it still performs better than any mower ive had. HATE the new mowers on the market. You covered all the basis and I was like, what cons can you have? Ive always used the mulch mode, the bag is pointless imo. Im shocked its an add oil as needed (almost changed both mowers oil, may still do just cuz one is still original 8-10 years)....first start pull no prime never fails, its amazing!

Great video! I just purchased the m320 craftsman. I did notice with the mower that the lawn was cut shorter than I wanted. I had the front and rear set at the highest setting. Wondering if i may have to switch it out for something different? I live in FL and just had land graded and floratam installed. They have not returned with roller yet but grass took real good within three weeks and was super high. Advice?
@deerparkhomeshop2471
Жыл бұрын
When I cut my grass on the highest setting it just seems too high for me and I have started cutting it at one notch lower. Floratam, I understand, is a hybrid version of San Augustine which is what I have, so it shouldn't be much different. I think most folks here cut it even shorter than I do so they won't have to mow as often. I'm using the M230 mower which may have a different wheel setup. My only advise would be to return the mower if you can or try to find larger diameter wheels. Measure your blade height above grade at the highest setting before you do a return so you can make sure the next mower you get will actually cut higher. Sorry I can't be more help.
Nice video. Hate the mower. This is the second Briggs and Stratton engine I’ve had. I was bound and determined not to buy another after all of the problems I had with the first (impossible to keep debris out of the carburetor so it had to be disassembled and cleaned before every other mow to get it to start). Horrible air intake design. The design of the m230 intake was better, and I did not want to go to an electric mower yet, so I swallowed my pride and bought the M230 from Lowe’s at $459(!) even though it has a Briggs and Stratton. Right out of the box, there was no manual, oil, or side discharge chute. Watched this video, realized it should have come with all that, and do I boxed it up and took it back to Lowe’s. It is very important to me to support businesses here and buy American, but I’m going electric after this. Very disappointed.

Sounds like you probably got a mower that had already been returned by someone else and had been repackaged. My M230 has preformed flawlessly since I made the video. Let me know how well the electric mower works for you. I have a fairly large yard and I'm concerned that I may not have enough battery charge to do the whole thing, but I could be dead wrong about that.
The pace control system is the adjustment of the trigger throttle to see how fast u want the to turn front wheels which determines your walk behind speed.
@deerparkhomeshop2471
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike, thanks for your comment. Actually, the more expensive Craftsman M320 has a true pace control system. Here is their definition: "PACE CONTROL SYSTEM: Comfortably walk at your own pace while the mower automatically adjusts to match your natural stride." The M230 in, my review, has variable speed which has to be manually adjusted to your desired speed. Like most people, I was confused on this point before I did the research for the video.
Thx for sharing. Great video. I only go with RWD bag and mulch much better but more expensive.

I’m considering purchasing this for the lesser M220 this weekend. I have a gift card for Lowe’s so this is basically the only gas mall where I can buy. I’ve heard some horror stories about the new Briggs engines, I understand you have to store them properly, but I’m hearing of problems on top of problems with these mowers. Would you still buy one today?
@deerparkhomeshop2471
10 ай бұрын
I've had nothing but good luck with mine. I have to mow my lawn weekly so storage is not a problem. For winter, its common practice in the Houston area to drain the gas and then start the mower and let it run until it quits. If you live north of here and have extremely cold winters, you may need to check and see if there are special steps to take. You should do this for Honda or any 4cyl. engine as well.
My last Craftsman had a 'catch' that would hold that back grass catcher door open till you returnrd and put the grass catcher back on. This newer model, it slams down and you have to lift and hold it up while you put the bag back on. Which side should you turn the mower on when you need to scrape the underside or remove the blade? The old mower it was ok to turn it over on the gas fill side, but when I did with this new mower, the air filter got lots of 'oil' in it and had to buy a new one. Can I turn it on the other side? The "manuals" today have very little info in them, I don't even have a parts list!
@deerparkhomeshop2471
Жыл бұрын
I was able to manage the lift door and attach the bag, but I don't use the bag much. You can take an appropriately size bungee cord and hook one end under the front of the mower and the other end on the doors edge and this will hold it open until you get the bag positioned. I have never had to scrape the underside of the mower. I use the top water port with the hose turned fully on. I run the mower two to three minutes and the underside gets good and clean. To change the blade, I would lift the air filter side of the mower as little as possible. I actually put mine on top of my workbench and lift and support the side with wood blocking until I'm done. This is just my method. I agree that the manual is really lacking but most modern manuals are. Try sites like partstree.com and ereplacements.com for parts lists and diagrams. Hope this helps.
At the 8:30 mark, what kind of bush is that with the pink petals? I, too, have one in my yard that only seems to bloom for roughly 3 weeks or so at the beginning of Spring. Any tips to get better results? Thanks!

I dont use the mulch bag either on mine. The lawn in front of a house, needs top soil in where it is straight. When you use a mulch bag on a front lawn, after a few years your top soil os going to sink down in some areas. Same thing applies to a back yard, except its appearance generally isnt as precious as the frontal view. Mulching lowers your top soil because the initial grass you are cutting used the soil when it grew, so it needs to go back to the soil to keep the level

Great video! What’s mulch mode?
@deerparkhomeshop2471

Mulch mode is when you don't use the bag or the side discharge adapter. The mower deck stays sealed and the combination of the mower design and the spinning blade pulverize the clippings and, since they art not discharged, they return to ground and "mulch" the yard. This design is very common among many brands of mowers.

@deerparkhomeshop2471

Unfortunately, you need to either make it a point of starting your gas equipment every few weeks during the winter season or draining the carb. before you store it. Gasoline tends to "shellac" up in the carb. as it gets old and then it won't start. There are also additives you can buy to help prevent this. I had this happen to my $700.00 generator. One quick test is to buy some starting fluid at the auto parts store. Remove the air filter and spray it in the air intake. Crank it, and if it starts it means that the electrical system is working. If it keeps running, let it idle for a while to get the gunk out of the carb. If it runs a few seconds and quits, then it is probably shellaced up and will need repair. If it's still in warranty, see if Craftsman will cover it. I wish I had better news for you. Please let me know how it turns out.

My mower is great but the bag doesn't seal and some grass escapes where it connects to thr mower deck.

I actually don't use the bag myself, but I think if the bottom rim had been designed to lock into place it would have sealed better.

My starting cord does not pull out. I'm afraid to brake the machine.

The top red starting lever has to be pulled back against the handle to release the starting cord. One of my other viewers had this problem because he didn't have the handle assembly pulled out far enough from the deck. If this doesn't help, it may be defective.
What kind of oil does it take
@deerparkhomeshop2471
Жыл бұрын
A 5w30, 30w, or 10w30 motor oil will work. The manufacturer provided Briggs & Straton 30w small engine oil with the mower, so that is what I will replace mine with, especially during the warranty period.
How agile is the mower,
@deerparkhomeshop2471

I would say about as maneuverable as a rear wheel drive. One exception though is that you can't get as close to to walls and fence when you approach them head on. I can but the front of the mower against a wall, for instance, and there will be a 5" strip of uncut grass left standing so I have to turn the mower and cut it. This is just a minor annoyance.
I just pulled one of these out of the box and there is no pressure on the self propelled lever. This feature is not engaging.
@deerparkhomeshop2471
Жыл бұрын
Forgive me if I state the obvious here, but the lever may just need to be adjusted. There is a small dial and the word "tighten" on the self propelled lever assy. near where the cable connects to it. This allows you to customize the pace of the mower. Turn the dial in the direction of the arrow until it engages and keep turning until the speed is where you want it. If this dose not work, then follow the cable back to the engine. Make sure it's connected to the spring loaded throttle. If this does not work, I would call the store that sold it to you. Hope this helps.

Or change your oil in your lawnmower at the end of the season

About the air filter you mentioned in your first comment, since it's a paper filter it needs to be changed regularly, depending on how much the mower is used. It can't be cleaned like a foam filter.
Look for fixed lawn mower blade

This lawnmower does have a traditional fixed blade which is what I prefer. I like to stick with proven technology.
This mower is front wheel drive. I would like my mower to be rear wheel drive. Anyway, thank you so much for the video I may have a slightly different model, but I could not have put this together without this video. The diagrams are utterly useless.

Craftsman says you only have to add oil as needed, which I think should be considered a minimum requirement. I think it's a great idea to change oil yearly. I don't have any hard facts to support this, but it seems logical that your mower will last longer.

If you've added the oil and fuel it should start. I guess that you have done that but it's not starting? AT the 5:30 to 5:45 point in the video, 1 first pull the red orange bail (lever) back against the handle and then give the rope a strong pull and it starts. If that dosen't work you may need to talk to your seller.
