I have the same mower I just recently bought a drive belt and put it on started it it moved forward and reverse then it threw the new belt off so I restalled it now mower goes forward but won't go backwards my question is do you think that the new belt got Stretched? The belt seems to be tight around the pulleys.

Hmm are you sure you have the belt routed correctly under one of the foot rests there is a sticker with how it should be routed. Another thing to check is the plastic idler pulleys I had to replace one of mine it was really worn down. Maybe check the release lever on the back it might need reset I think I bumped mine when I was changing the belt.

@@PastPreserver I have checked the belt route and also the reverse bypass it's got me stumped why it goes forward fine but not reverse

Ive had the same problem, check for debree like mud/grass underneath the mower drivebelt system, make sure all your torqe bracksets are their and all your bolts are in place

In my opinion the Kohler 5400 is garbage. The Craftsman frame they put her on is even worse. It wasn't even one season and it was problems fouling out. To open the third season we can't keep it running. Kohler cut every possible Corner they could. Buy a Honda or something but don't buy a Kohler. I grew up in the day of two-stroke lawn boys that ran forever and side gas tank Briggs & strattons Also ran forever these new Riding Mower Motors are garbage

Very true I have mowers come in because they won’t run it’s the Same with snowblower the put a filter in the tank to prevent gas to the carb and if you buy a new one from a big box store you have to drive 3 hours for it to be under warranty
