Crafting a TERRIFYING Experience | Horror Game Devlog #1

Ойындар

In this devlog I will talk about a new horror game project I have been working on in Unreal Engine 5. I will go over why I chose Unreal Engine instead of Unity for this particular project and how I am using free photorealistic assets to craft the levels.
I hope you enjoy this devlog!

Good idea on making a smaller project. I'm sure you will learn a lot of things in the launch / post-launch phase that will be super useful for your other projects. Also, the horror demo is looking great already!

I may one day look into unreal, but it's so different I'd take awhile before I become accustomed to it. Amazing video as always!

Thanks! It’s definitely a learning curve when coming from Unity, but luckily the Scene view window interface is pretty similar to Unity’s. I haven’t been sold on the whole Blueprint visual coding thing that Unreal uses though. I’ll have to mess with it more to see if it’s worth it.

Interesting video, still think that i need to try Unreal one time instead of Unity.

Thanks! Yeah it’s different then my usual videos, but I’ve always wanted to give Unreal Engine a try and mess with the photorealistic assets. It is definitely a learning curve and I haven’t decided if I like using there Blueprint system instead of coding. 😅

As someone who has too many ideas floating in my head, i have to ask, how do you commit to something like this your first time? I'm stuck on this massive info gathering phase of figuring/learning this entire process.

To be honest, I have struggled with that for a long time and still do. I have random ideas pop into my head all the time that I want to work on. If you are still in the learning phase, it’s okay to focus more on learning instead of trying to create your idea right away. In the case of this project, my main motivation was I wanted to learn Unreal Engine, I wanted to make a horror game and I was a little burnt out on my other project and needed to work on something different. I think the key is to just pick one of the ideas you are really excited about and just start working on it. Make tasks to work on and see where it takes you. Most likely the project you set out to make won’t be the one you end with since things change as you test and experiment. In the end, if you are having fun and learning a lot it doesn’t matter what you work on first. I wish you the best of luck on your future projects!

Can you show me how you can change the door?

  • @BitByteBit_

If I remember correctly, you click on the door object in the hierarchy then look for the mesh it is using. You can then select a different mesh. You will most likely have to adjust the animations and things like that for the door handles. I may do a tutorial in the future if I find the time.

@@BitByteBit_ assets like footsteps of the player or the crosshair

In this case I actually just modified the footstep sounds that come with horror engine in a separate program. The crosshair can be replaced by opening the component that contains the ui design. If you click on the current crosshairs you should be able to replace the default with a new one pretty easily.

Why don't you choose Unreal 4 ....coz Unreal 5 will lag in most the pc if the requirements not meet.
