Crafting a Dovetailed Walnut & Purple Heart Blanket Chest | WoodWorks with David J. Marks, Ep.3
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this episode of WoodWorks, we craft a beautiful blanket chest, utilizing the rich, deep hues of walnut paired with the vibrant, unique color of purple heart wood. This project is a deep dive into the world of fine woodworking, where the selection of contrasting woods and the mastery of classic joinery techniques culminate in a piece that is as much a functional storage solution as it is a work of art.
Here's what we cover:
* Selecting and matching walnut boards to create a harmonious exterior for the chest, emphasizing the importance of grain and color uniformity.
* The art of dovetail joinery, showcasing its strength and decorative potential in creating the chest's sides, and introducing a modern approach with a dovetail jig and router for precision and ease.
* Construction of a frame and panel lid featuring a raised walnut panel within a purple heart frame, adding dimension and visual interest to the chest's design.
* Building an arts and crafts style base from purple heart, incorporating a step motif for an added layer of design complexity and elegance.
* The process of gluing and assembling the chest with a focus on technique and timing, using slow-setting urea resin glue for a stress-free assembly.
* Squaring up rabbets and integrating a plywood panel into the base of the chest, followed by the meticulous fitting of the base to ensure stability and aesthetic coherence.
* Applying a blend of tung and linseed oil to finish the chest, enhancing the natural beauty of the woods and protecting the chest for years to come.
This blanket chest project marries the beauty of natural wood with the satisfaction of creating something both useful and beautiful.

Hey @Tnblues,thank you very much! I love playing the drums and keep my traps in my shop!
I overlook "His David J'ness" (as we used to call him, very affectionately and respectfully) even owned a portable belt sander. I don't recall that one making a second appearance.
I remember this episode very well! and being so delightfully jealous of David's access to all that beautiful California walnut
