In the United States, fare evasion has become such a problem that most every major subway network has stopped using in-person fare inspectors and rely solely on police. A fare inspector approaching someone in a US subway could easily be attacked, stabbed, shot, or even killed. Say what you want about Britain, at least their citizens still (for the most part) respect authority.

Don't be mistaken it is slowly heading that way as well.

When I was in Australia about three years ago and the temperature in Melbourne was in the 30's, I noticed that hats that had to be worn as part of a uniform always had some kind of mesh vent around the top to allow for ventilation.

A day on the tube is £7-£15 depending on how far you are travelling, for example if you are going through zone 1 it costs more than if zone 2 is the limit of your travel, and travelling to zone 9 costs a lot more than zone 5

Couldn't they have built new as Subway Cars that had air conditioning units pre-installed or buy from Bombardier type companies. Similar to what Toronto's TTC did for their Subways?

Heat exchange is a fundamental concept. Heat has to be dissipated and much of the ground in London is mostly clay which over time dries and loses its capacity to absorb heat. Air comes from the exposed areas above and if it’s very warm heat builds up from it in the deep level which adds to the heat produced by the trains and people below. As an engineering challenge it is a very difficult one. Luckily, it is only a problem when the air outside is very warm which is mostly not an issue in London on most days. When it is a problem it can become unbearable.

I think it's disgusting that only when the temperature reaches a certain degree then you're allowed to open your shirt, loosen your tie etc. Even as a bus driver i get the same crap. I decide when it's too hot. No one is gonna tell me when I should loosen my tie or open my shirt. Bloody buskers....if they're that good then why don't they go on X Factor, or better yet get a job??

Schools do the same. There's many cases of them telling pupils that they have to wear uniform blazers or jumpers in the heat and then the kids end up fainting

This is a direct copy from the original broadcast VT, the black space is for the in-programme ad break. The clock at the end of the black is to tell the technicians when the programme is about to resume, so they can time the switch from the ad-reel VT to the programme VT.

The woman seems so annoyed sitting there and missing a day of work. Jeeze those english trains are packed, I thought that was only in Japan where they squeeze many people into them as possible. The guy with the guitar is sure persistent. Maybe they should arrest him if he's creating a nuisance.

IF he has a license for busking, then there's nothing they can do apart from move him to a different area IF he is causing nuisance. IF he doesn't, then they can arrest him.

Er did he say the busker should be shot?! I mean he is annoying and a nuisance but that's a bit strong isn't it?

Because it was 2002, and despite celsius being adopted as the standard for temperature some 40 years prior, many people (especially of the older generations) were more familiar with fahrenheit. It was for audience appeal.

Busking isn't illegal. Buskers have to audition for the london underground. Catherine Jenkins famously busked the underground in disguise for the press. There are endless Busking locations on London tube stations and coach stations. Busking isn't begging either since it has been legal since the late 18th century and provides value for the public considering buskers don't beg or state they need a certain sum of money from a person donating freely to their passion. Busking brings tourism

Busking was illegal as per the LU by-laws, which apply on LU property. Besides, this was in 2002, before the busking licence system was introduced.

What a difference Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. I'd take Ken Livingston any day..

Here's a novel idea, why not buy a ticket for your journey.

Increase the Penalty fare to £100 and Make free public transport under 25 Or Make free public transport for university students and deduct from their tuition fee (Tie business with London universities)

Our underground is Victorian. Nothing in Britain was designed for extremely hot weather because it's very unusual. Our Summer weather is rain, rain and sunny spells between more rain. Putting air con into 300 year old, deep tunnels is just too expensive and difficult

@@user-ho7mg9ol7w 300 is a bit optimistic buddy, the first deep level line opened in 1890. Even the Metropolitan Railway, the oldest underground urban railway in the world, is only 160 years old.

What's better than catching trespassers who haven't paid their fare. The system costs a lot to operate and maintain, so why should reprobates ride free at the expense of others.
