Cracker Model Live Steam Locomotive. Part 1 Making the Cylinder.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Cracker was designed (not by me) as a very simple live steam loco for 32mm gauge track.
It has an oscillating engine and a geared drive to the wheels and is based on an industrial engine.
It can be customised in many forms. Have a look at this video to see what Tony has done to his. • A pair of Crackers. The red one is twin cylinder version.
I am just going to show how the engine was made in these videos not a complete build. I liked the simple design and how the bottom of the cylinder is extended as a trunk guide.

    I like the pseudo tail-stock to center the tap. Very innovative (I mean that idea could be 100 years old but new to me!).. Also the solder thinning and cutting of small strips. Again, clever and obviously borne of great experience!

    Very cool project. Any reason why you don't use lubrication while turning/machining?

    Are the cut outs on the side of the cylinder optional? Like, are they there just for cool looks or do they actually serve a purpose?

  • @myfordboy

    @myfordboy

    It would work without the cutouts. The extended cylinder forms a tru=nk guide that supports the pistin big end. The cutouts would reduce friction.

    I am using plans for the basic design but I have changed the cylinder design and porting. I am fitting a larger boiler and styling it to look like a Byers industrial loco.
