I have another question. I have started to clean up all my old joints. After removing the areas that were cracked, and the exposed tape that was not adequately covered, I find that all the joints between the edges of the boards seem to be already filled with old mud. Do I need to put more tape over these areas, or can I simply start to add thin layers of new mud, directly over the old dry mud, and feather it out? Should I be able to fill and hide those old areas without the addition of more tape? Should those cracks permanently disappear, and stay invisible without new tape being applied? thanks

What do you do after the last coat if the ceiling was textured? Just try to figure out what the texture was and match it or what?

Thanks for the help. I enjoyed the video. Please, can you talk about the uneven line where the white ceiling meets the grey wall? It looks like someone has yet to cut in the white. But, in my experience, it's best to do the ceiling first. Do you have a different viewpoint on that? I'd appreciate your experienced view.

Thanks for watching and for the comment. For this one the whole room was primed and painted the same color because it was in a upstairs. But my way of doing things usually is to paint the ceiling flat white and then cut in to the top with the wall color

Thank you so much. Do you recommend using paper tape for a cracked ceiling over a butt joint in a shower? I would prefer to use flat paint but can do flat enamel if necessary. I don't like shiny ceilings.

I don't do a ton of drywall as I am most into painting, but whenever I tape I always use paper, I know guys that swear by the mesh for flat or butt joints but my experience is that paper is always the strongest, as for paint I also like using a flat as it does always look better. Just make sure you tell them at the store you buy it, where it is being applied and see what they suggest as for what brand is best in a bathroom. Depending on where you live, but here in Ontario Canada I think Benjamin Moore is the best but Sico is a close 2nd. Hope this helped , thanks for watching and for the question 😊

Hi great video. Couple questions. Does the painted surface need to be prepped in any way befor muddying over it? And second, do you prefer paper or mesh for flat surface and corner joints. I’m repairing cracked joints in a bathroom that is similar to the room shown in this video. I have to repair all corners and even where the angled ceiling meets the flat ceiling and the walls.

Hey! I don't do anything to prep the areas before applying the compound, never had any issues. As for tape vs mesh, it is a controversial topic in the trades lol 😆 you have some that only use the mesh and others that swear by tape, I am definitely the latter. I always use paper tape for all joint . I have never had any issues in 15 years, no cracks or anything. I have repaired many any cracks over 15 years and 100% of the time , it was mesh. So until I see something different I will always advise , for a good job that will not have issues in the future and for durability and longevity use paper tape . Hope this helps ! Assuming one is ok with less than perfect, can you prime and paint over only the patched area (with matching paint of course), or do you always repaint the entire ceiling regardless of how small the patched area is because it's always too obvious?

I always paint the entire surface, but that's because I'm doing it for clients and I dont want anything to stand out, because even with the same paint there is a chance you will see where you primed and painted, the only way to eliminate that from happening is to do the entire space corner to corner.

My bathroom every. Single. Tape. Is peeling and bubbling. I am gonna be working on this all day, aren't I?

I did my own taping and mudding probably 30+ years ago. Over the years, and especially in a room that stays close to 80 degrees in the winter due to a woodburning stove, several taped areas are coming apart. I am trying to talk myself into doing what you did in your video, to repair them. I think these bad joints might be due to my inexperience 30 years ago, and /or the high temperatures created by the stove. Is it best to wait and do the repairs when stove and room temperatures are a little cooler? Might those high temperatures adversely effect the proper drying of the mud? Thanks

There can be multiple reasons for this issue, the temp is definitely one, also how the tape and Mudd was applied the first time. I fix cracks like this one in all seasons, but if the area is extra warm this time of year you might be right to wait until spring. Did you use the paper tape on the joints last time? I believe it is the strongest and the best option on the market. Hope this helps

You're welcome, yes you need to prime, the primer and paint in one isn't quite good enough to conceal drywall repairs. But a good primer like bullseye 123 isn't that expensive and it will make sure you don't see where you made the repair . Thanks for watching and for the comment

That is a 120 grit block on one side and 150 on the other

Another question Do I need to do any preparation to the existing painted surfaces first, like lightly sanding, or scuffing up the shiny finish of the paint, in order to help the mud to adhere better?

Sanding won't hurt, the drywall Mudd I use is by a company called CGC I like the all purpose compound for these applications, however if you have a gap on the drywall .are sure to prefill it with sheetrock 90, I have a video showing how I apply the sheetrock 90 in gaps you don't want to use all purpose in a gap

I have tape delaminating at the ceiling where it meets the wall. Should I only cut the tape that is loose or remove the whole tape which will create a lot more work?

I always say without seeing it it can be hard to know exactly what it's like, personally I would just removed the bad spot and saved yourself some time

Yes, like mine that is in the garage. Also, just my luck the ceiling is pretty high. Where I live almost all contractors are scammers so I was hoping not to risk my life doing this.

Matching the paint is my issue I’m having blistering in my master bath I’m sure the humidity isn’t helping my causes when I get un lazy I need to make the repairs

Yeah matching paint can be tricky, as far as the blistering, do you have a fan in the bathroom? And does it always get used? 1 thing I like to do is hold a piece of paper up to the exhaust fan and see if it holds it up if it doesn't then I know that the fan is not working right, a good exhaust fan can really make a difference

I’ve been looking for video in how to fix cracked tape in an inside corner for a while and I finally found it! I have a question, though. You said it’s best to remove all the old tape. But I only saw you remove all the tape on the ceiling portion. Should all the tape be removed on the wall part of the inside corner, as well? Thanks for your help! I have this problem in so many areas of our house! Popcorn ceilings were removed and then just painted over.

Hi, thanks for the comment Yeah I just remove the tape that is damaged , if the rest of the tape looks good then I just leave that

I remodeled a flip house for this guy & drywalled the ceiling in 2 rooms . About 2 month's later it got real hot out but the idiot didn't want to turn on the ac until it was 95* .need less to say the ceiling joints popped on one side of the tape.

Can you comment on which compound(s) you are using? Are you laying the tape with an all purpose and then going back over the tape with a topping compound? Or just using 1 for everything?

I use CGC compound, I use the CGC dust control to apply the tape and for a 3 coats

The paper tape will help prevent it from cracking. I am a big believer in the paper, I have had very good luck with it over the years

@@TheCanadianHomePainter Another usual problem I've run into is some of the repaired spots ended up swelling after painted. Why some were ok and some ended up bulge when all procedures and materials were the same? Spackled and then primed and painted on after dried. Would you have any clue? Many thanks again.

I would have to go back and look to see forsure how much I charged but I think it would have been around 2k roughly

how long does it take each coat to dry?

If it is still Grey looking it is too wet when it is dry it will be white and it will sand easy, give it a few hours then see how it looks, depends on the temperature of the room and the humidity level aswell

My ceiling has a texture to it. How can I make it look as natural as possible??

I'll be totally honest with you, I have never in 15 years been able to fix a textured ceiling without making it blend in. I have always been able to see where I made the repairs no matter how hard I try to make it look right. Sorry I can't give you any good advice. There might be other channels that have a better technique then me you may want to search that out.

@@gregs.427 just to make it blend perfectly will be very difficult, but if you take your time and have some experience with drywall it will probably be ok, you will most likely be able to see the area , if you are worried I would find a good local drywaller and have him come and see if he thinks he can do it, probably would cost more then 2 -300$ if it is only a small repair

It is really difficult to estimate something like that since painting prices can vary quite a bit form place to place

I just rewatched it snd I guess there are a few things you can't see, but I think you get a good idea of how to do the repair. I have other videos you can see how I get the compound off the drywall hawk that I use .
