Haddon Robinson has a way, he is certainly anointed and gifted in the Way, to put it in a more appropriate term. Shalom

Paul paid with a bond that was in the letter. It was all a trust and Paul asked Philemon to be a reciever for Onesimus..not as a slave but as a man. It goes way beyond that but Paul was the surety for Onesimus.

Lovely message with an ending to match. But did Onesimus steal? Am undecided, as Paul says verse 17, KJV, 'IF he owes you' as opposed to 'I know he stole and will replace.' My 2 minas'.

I am still amazed at how much all these so called preachers do NOT understand the Bible at all!! This is not what the beautiful book of Philemon is about. I think that until these preachers start telling the truth, they should just stop talking!!!

I am disappointed with this sermon. Dr. Robinson's reconstruction of the historical background to the letter is speculative at best. Most of what he preaches as 'fact' concerning where Paul was imprisoned, Philemon's wealth and how Onesimus came to meet Paul, is really just "based on a true story". Sadly, it's conjecture passing for historical fact.

As Dr. Robinson said, the fact that Philemon owned slaves and a house sufficient to host a church meant that he was a man of some means. As to the "historical reconstruction", reading this letter from Paul to Philemon, without reading a response from Philemon or any input from Onesimus, is essentially the same thing as hearing one side of a phone conversation. A reconstruction, using both the facts given and a good imagination, is the best that anyone can do. The letter to Philemon is like any other document in the Bible: It has a context, a background, and a backstory that can, to a certain extent, be extracted through study and exegesis. However, with this particular document, it's a bit trickier than, say, the Corinthian letters or the letter to the Romans. Cut Dr. Robinson a bit of slack: he does the very best he can to fill in the gaps that would otherwise be void.

Sir... did you happen to notice the important stuff? Or were you under the impression that the details of the story were the important stuff? The power of the gospel was made clear and my heart was rent.

Matt Viney i didn't hear him say that it was a fact, but that he may have or could have met paul from those areas, Because he said nevertheless he meet paul somewhere. He uses sentences like, " we dont know exactly how it happen." So, i dont think that he was trying to be inconsistent historically.

Paul contradicts God's word in torah. Deut 23 Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee. Sadly, paul disobeys God and returns a runaway slave to his master, philemon @

Deuteronomy Speaks of FORCING the return of slave to it's master. Further it tells us to allow the slave to live where it may and do not oppress it. Paul did not force Onesimus to return but knew that he must in order to heal the rift between Philemon and Onesimus. Paul gave Godly advice to both and I believe they both followed it.

@@jimcoleman3053 Deut 23:16 is specific. "you shall not return him", nothing about "forcing". Deut 23:16 does stipulate " if he seeks refuge with you from his master", so you are saying the slave did not seek refuge from his master? But philemon 1:12 says ""Whom I have sent again". Nothing in philemon suggests the slave does not seek refuge from his master and chooses to return?

I believe Onesimus returned of his own volition based on the advice of Paul. I believe you are being legalistic and are disregarding the intent of the law in this instance.

Jim Coleman you are adding things to Philemon that is not even implied just to try and make it that Paul did not violate Torah. Philemon 1:12 Paul says "I" am sending him back. But you claim Paul did not send him back, he only suggested it. Then you accuse the torah of being legalistic?

@@jimcoleman3053 legalistic? So you think anytime you think you know better than God's word, it is ok to violate torah?
