CPC: Choroid Plexus Cysts on Ultrasound in Pregnancy Discussed by Dr Nari Heshmati

CPC: Choroid Plexus Cysts are a common finding on pregnancy ultrasounds that can cause anxiety because of the association with Edwards Syndrome (T18). Dr Nari Heshmati, a board certified OBGYN, discusses what this finding actually means and what your options are moving forward.

Dr. Nari, Thank you forb this video. I had my 20 week anatomy scan today and they found 3 cysts. The doctor is suggesting a second opinion ultrasound. Of course I'm thinking the worst and have been asking for all my prayer Warriors to join together. Your video has put me at ease for the time being as I saw numerous times my baby's hands open during the ultrasound. I appreciate the video and love the background! very pretty. thanks again.

Dear Dr. Nari, Thank you for posting such useful information out of your busy schedule. We have been to ULTRASOUND SCAN TODAY and they mentioned it as single cystic lesion of size 5x3 mm noted in left choroid plexus. They might do another ultrasound or any other test. Hopefully everything goes well. Thank you!

Hello doctor , I am 29 years old . My baby had the CPC at 14 weeks but was completely gone by 20 weeks. All my test came negative and the specialist who sow my at 20 weeks told me everything looked normal and there was nothing to worry about. However , I been reading a lot on google and I can't help but worry so much. I read a lot about . this could be likened to DS and other scary staff I never hear of. Should I worry about it

So while I can't comment on specific cases--that is something to discuss with your obgyn--in general a CPC in an otherwise normal ultrasound is a very low risk marker. If someone with a CPC and normal ultrasound has any other screening test such as a quad screen and that is negative then that is even lower risk and it is reasonable to not worry further.

Dear Dr Nari Your video was a great help in our distress after having learnt that our baby had bilateral CPC at the 19th week ultrasound. I am a 40-year-old woman and due to my pregnancy considered to be high risk pregnancy. First, we heard very upsetting information about CPC and we were so worried. Your video was such a help a glimmer of hope. (My doctors forgot to mention that a CPC alone is a soft marker.) Because of other risk factors I refused to have amniocentesis but we had a so-called Prenatest (kind of expensive blood test for chromosomic abnormalities) that they often use in Europe. It was all negative. We were also sent to have heart ultrasound with a specialist and they found everything OK again. Today in my 32nd week of pregnancy we had ultrasound check again and the cysts have completely disappeared! 🙏 Thank you again for this very informative video and your kind attitude. I wish everybody an enjoyable healthy pregnancy.

Dear Dr. nari, need your opinion my wife has done anomalies scan 2D on 19wk 2 days and repeated anomaly scan 3D on 19wk 3 days. Both results shows right side cpc measuring 5.1x4.6 mm and isolated unilateral right side cpc 4 mm respectively. During 11 to 13 weeks she had done dual marker which results in negative and based on cpc our doctor suggested to do quadruple test, and it results shown as negative. Our doctor suggested not to worry as result is normal and cpc will go away within 24 to 26th weeks, in another 1 month time. However we still feel that fear factor for abnormalities. So doctor suggest 2 options either have NIPT test which give results after 2 weeks and Amniocentesis which is invasive method and results provided in 2-3 days time. Kindly suggest your opinion. In our family history no down syndrome child ever born. I have daughter age 7 years with everything fine and studying in school. Your earliest reply will help us to take decision

CPC typically resolve although we often do not do follow up ultrasounds for them. It would be very rare for a CPC to be a problem in and of itself and the concern is more that this is a "soft marker" for T18. If there are concerns about changes in a CPC, the important thing is to ensure a finding is actually a CPC and not something else so it would be important to see a maternal fetal medicine specialist

We will have to do a video on PCOS. Many patients with PCOS are able to conceive. It can be harder because of infrequent ovulation but that can be addressed through medications and lifestyle changes. I would set up a visit with your OBGYN and have them confirm you have PCOS and discuss whether lifestyle changes such as weight loss are needed versus medications.

I was recently told my baby has this..... the thing that has me concerned is are clinics legally obligated to disclose any other abnormalities found in blood test and ultrasounds? All I was told was I'm now scheduled for a level II ultrasound because they found the cyst. I won't find out anything else until the 14th so I'm trying to find comfort anywhere I can. Also I should mention that every Doppler scan and ultrasound I've had they say the baby's heart looks or sounds great... would that change over time with Trisomy 18 or would there always be a notable 'somethings off'?

It's important to discuss the ultrasound findings with your provider. In general, isolated choroid plexus cysts in an otherwise normal ultrasound are very low risk. Often your provider does not know how concerned you are and if you reach out to them they can discuss your individual case.
