CPAP Therapy - How It Works, Types of Masks, Hospital vs Home Settings

CPAP is a type of breathing machine support known as non-invasive positive pressure ventilation. It stands for continuous positive airway pressure. Many patients use CPAP machines at home, especially while they sleep, for conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, COPD, heart failure, and many more. We also use CPAP in the hospital for acute illnesses like COPD and Heart Failure. In this video we dive into the following and more!
Introduction, Uses, Medical Conditions - 0:00 - 5:00

This was interesting. I would like to see more in depth videos on the bpap and avaps machines. Also, would you be willing to discuss a little bit about the different brands of machines. For instance, Res-Med has bluetooth technology with their machines and an app to keep track of your numbers and events. I did have a Res-Med (still do), but now I also have an avaps machine. I was going to be getting a trilogy machine by Phillips but that fell through. I now use a rental that is a Lowenstein Luisa machine by Movair. I just saw that Movair is now providing remote monitoring of their machines to doctors. This is new. I will be watching the rest of your videos as I really do enjoy learning about the human body and the medical field.

Very helpful in the CoVid wars. Wish we had had the Euro helmet. Above 20, you pop the LES open and fill the stomach.

Thank you. This was interesting. Are there ways of changing the settings at home or do I have to see my doctor? Sometimes, I wake up and have to turn off my APAP and then turn it on again because it seems too high. Does the APAP adjust down as well as up?

Thanks for checking out the video and for commenting! The general answer is that your doctor should be the one adjusting your settings. They typically do this based on different factors related to your underlying disease process and pressure needs. If it is feeling too high though, you can reach out to them to discuss this. APAP does adjust rather than the single set pressure of CPAP. Of course, we also have to emphasize that this channel is not intended for medical advice, rather this is simply education and opinion. Please do not make any decisions based on this channel and speak with your physician about all concerns. We appreciate you!

As I am thinking about this now I wonder. What would be the effect of: pressurizing the entire room. Sleeping inside a your of iron lung (updated to be molded plastic) with a constant negative pressure. Stimulating breaths by synchronized puffs of air to the face. A startle sound playing if breathing is not detected. (or any other type startle) Diaphragm exercises, deep breathing exercises, to improve muscle tone for better breathing while sleeping. (Are there any studies showing differences between people who regularly stress their bodies with exercise that requires deep heavy breathing?) Negative ion generator to reduce any inflamation of the airway. Have any studies been done on syncing breathing by things such as a metronome type device? A slightly rocking bed to sync with breathing. I have many continuing questions. My mind has told me that stressing the body during the day to need extra oxygen and higher breathing rate will condition the body to respond better at night. Exercising and growing those neural connections that respond to lack of air and the connections to the muscles to do the work. My mind might have lied to me but that's what it told me. Are there any studies?
