Cozumel, Mexico | Walking Tour - International Cruise Terminal, Port Shopping, & Beach Walks

Cozumel is a small island just off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and one of the most frequently visited ports for cruise lines in the Western Caribbean. Because of this, the port itself is stuffed to the brim with shops, bars, restaurants, and entertainment. Outside the terminal, you'll also find a myriad of tour venues, with most setting out to a number of dive sites. In fact, the Mesoamerican reef system surrounding the area is the second largest reef in the world.
We're making port aboard Royal Caribbean International's Oasis of the Seas as part of a Western Caribbean cruise. For our walk today, we'll be exploring the amenities the international cruise terminal has to offer as well as take a coastal walk up Cozumel's western beaches and roads. We'll be heading in the direction of downtown, but we won't actually go that far (it's about a 45-60 minute walk each way). Regarding the excursions and tours offered at Cozumel, know that most of the diving-related ones are right off the coast, while any setting out to Mayan ruins are an hour or more away.

to get to the ship at any closed loop port you need your ship card and government issued ID

Here, at least, you don't even need the ID if you have the ship card.

Hmm, I'm assuming you're coming by ship, yes? Cozumel is pretty touristy, especially along that main road I was on. As long as you're walking during the day, while ships are in port, you're probably fine. That road is mostly scuba places, and I saw several women running along it. In and immediately around port is very safe too. The worst you'll probably get is vendors trying to sell you stuff. Still, I'd recommend researching via Trip Advisor, or similar, for any place you go, if you want to be sure.

Is there anything to see in Cozumel like town or downtown and can we rent a taxi from port to see town?

There is a downtown sort of shopping/marketplace kind of area. I have not been personally, but there are several tours and shore excursions that will take you there (sorry, I don't know the name). If you opt for a taxi, there will be a bazillion right outside the port.
