Cowboy Coffee and Campfire Cooking! Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Part Five
Part Five of the Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Build using traditional gear and hand tools only! During this episode I use a natural spring for water, show you my favorite fire lay that I call the "elevator fire lay", show you how I make my coffee, and cook some oatmeal for breakfast.
This series is about a return to more traditional bushcraft skills and enjoying myself doing a solo overnight camping trip, while building the bushcraft camp with more traditional bushcraft gear. I have chosen to use vintage camping gear like an Oilskin Tarp, a selection of leather and waxed canvas items, and some hand forged items that are truly one-of-a-kind like my marlinspike. In addition, there are some items that would be considered more modern mixed in there.
The focus of this series was not teaching the skills by the numbers; it was meant to show "skills in context" as they would be used in a bushcraft camp setup.

I don't care if your 5 feet outside your backdoor. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into these videos. The content and teaching style is what most are here for. Thank you for what you have done and what you do now. No matter where its from.

Well said. We care about instruction not about whether they are representing every potential hardship. I know so much work goes into making the scenarios and videos. Kudos to him.

Yup.....the content in the education is worth more than location....
This is so relaxing to watch. The man in his natural habitat, enjoying a good old coffee.
When I brew my "Cowboy" coffee I keep a little cold water on the side. Add grounds when water is warm, let come to rolling boil for 2-3 minutes. Add the cold water and that will pull all the grounds to the bottom. My old man used to grab a cold rock from the lake to do the same thing as the water. The boiling pulls a little more acid out of the beans ... smooth cup o joe.
That tripod trick was possibly the best thing I've seen on KZread in the last several months! So cool!

That is such an apt description of your teaching style. Great comparison badkarma11.
GREAT TRICK WITH THE TRIPOD BUD.
Moccasins, my favorite footwear, the preferred footwear of woodsman for years (hard sole or soft sole, low cut or high top as terrain or weather dictates). Coffee and Oatmeal simple and quick, perfect. I like to add a little butter if I have it handy. Really enjoying this series.
I see you measure ingredients like my favorite KZread cook, Cowboy Kent Rollins, I like it and that coffee looks mighty tasty (that’s not saying much coming from a guy who drinks instant Folgers). Glad to see your co-star Ripp Sleeve is still hangin’ in there too, hope he makes it to the end of the series. All jokes aside, I’m diggin’ the format and think it’s pretty cool to see the basic stuff like coffee and breakfast, I get to learn something from it as well as get ideas for what to bring and do when I’m out in the woods, so thanks for that and looking forward to the next episode.

I just love coming across easier ways of doing things. That tripod lash though. Wow. That alone was worth the entire video. Thanks brother!
Good practical advice with enough technical, for good measure.
Cowboy style's what's kept me happy. Any filtering traps the essential oil... where the caffeine resides. Giddy Up! -11b4p 82nd
Relaxing to watch
Nice outing my friend love the old school set up .
We all focus on fire skills, nice to see cooking skills and of course coffee skills highlighted! Maybe a suggestion for additional content is to talk about other semi-permanent camp needs. How to manage food storage away from animals, human bodily function concerns, and such. I enjoy your delivery and respect your knowledge sharing. Thank you and your family for your military service!
Arguably the most important C of all.
Love the cowboy coffee
Awesome video and over nighter!!!
Nice clean concise work, bro! DOL!
One of the best channels out thee on survival and outdoors skillsets. Totally underrated channel. No fluff and flash just useful knowledge and info
Ok, you got me back at Chock full of nuts....love that coffee!
Thank u for bottle toggle idea!

Yes ! But those things are made in Covid land, and I've had more than a few that crapped out after 3-4 uses. That's why you should always have other means available for fire making... Extra lighter(s), Hurricane matches, ferocerium "fero" rod, magnesium shavings bar, magnifying glass... ...
You will never guess what I had for breakfast. I came into my office turned on the computer and started your video while eating breakfast. Sumatra coffee, steel cut oats and a 1/4 cup of raisins. LOL Bruce from the City of Orange in Orange county California.
GB2, thanks for the vid. Good call on the raisins.
I just had to watch this video over again (lost count) .Definitely not the first, third or fifth. Thanks to Shawn for recommending you Matt, and Dan. I really do appreciate your work.
Im enjoying your videos.
There was an Artesian well on my grandpa's farm cold and refreshing on a hot Georgia summer's day. Nice trick with the Tripod. Stewed raisians always a great addition to a meal. Stay safe.
Yours are without a doubt the finest survival type videos on here, always watch each one to the end, thank you for them, from the UK.
At last....A REAL camping helper. I was amazed that I had not thought of doing the tripod tying that way. So easy and secure. Thanks heaps.
New to your channel sir. Thank you for everything 🙏🤌
Got to love some cowboy coffee!
After you brew the coffee...if you swirl in cold water, the cold takes the grounds to the bottom. 😊👍
Nicely done, nothing beats a warm brew in the morning
That Tri pod idea is great
I just found your channel and I've been heavily binging all your stuff. Just wanted to say, it stuck out to me again in this video: the way you voice and explain your stream of consciousness is exemplary. Thinking out loud and letting us know all the things you're keeping in mind while you work out how you're going to do something, it really helps reinforce good habits of how to think about solutions. Thanks a bunch man, keep the content coming.

Several months behind you doing the same things. You are correct, watching Joshua teach is great, he understands that some people need more visual than spoken words to learn. I'm a fan.
I love being the first up at camp, starting the fire and enjoying a cup of coffee while the camp is still quiet. I cheat though and use a camp percolator. Awesome content as usual.

I've been impatiently waiting a week for this video! Good stuff as always. Thank you, and Keep it up!
You’re really an idol I can’t wait to see you at the 2020 Florida class and learn first hand from one of the best!
Great video as always and it's also relaxing to watch. You're doing are great service for everyone that wants to learn about bushcrafting techniques etc. I've always had a great amount of respect for the SF guys. I am a retired paratrooper and went to jumpmaster school in the 1980s in Bad Tolz, "West Germany" when 10th group had a small detachment stationed there running the school. The team members there were the most professional and no nonsense soldiers I've ever had the pleasure to train with and be trained by. Airborne!
Yep, stayed for the coffee part. Nice.
Love raisins in oatmeal!
I forget a lot of stuff, but I'm going to remember the tripod tieoff.

Just rewatched this and man I can’t wait to get back out for some dirt time. !!! Add a little bacon and some fry bread to the mix of breakfast and you will want a nap after it lol!!! Great video the first time I watched and better the second time around.
Awesome thank you.
Great tip for the quick tripod.
Besides skill one of the things that stands out in your work is the tone that comes through on your videos... the tone of respect for resources. It's lacking in so many you tube survival skill people. Much respect for your work.
If you shock the cowboy coffee with a bit of cold water it helps the grounds settle a bit more.

I was just about to say the same, I usually add a tablespoon of cold water after mixing, and leave it for 3-5 minutes to settle. No grounds in the cup :)
Dude, thank you for these videos. I appreciate the time and thought you put into these.
Thank you
Where we go hiking/backpacking there are plenty of lakes and streams in the area we frequent. Only thing we have to worry about is purification and not drinking water sources that are contaminated with mercury (etc.) from mining. Whenever you find a water source like the spring you found, it really simplifies life. ;) Great video. Thank you.
I've been taking oatmeal when I head out for a long time, it's easy to pack, quick to make, I also had raisins.. Now for coffee, I usually will take the instant of the coffee bags (like tea bags) there also easy to pack and quick to make.
Dam that coffee looks amazing
Joshua, thanks for sharing, God bless brother !
Thumbs up!!! Clark
Loved: I usually prefer maple for this. Snark!
That fire is awesome! Enjoy life! Great video!

Thank you, warrior. Like seeing a Zippo. I was never a smoker, but appreciated lighter talent. Gandolf smoke rings from a pipe, too.
I usually buy the instant single serving. Or buy the coffee in the tea bag but I am going to definitely try that great video 🇺🇸
I knew it would be simple and wonderful. Makes me want a nice fresh cup right now. Loving these videos.
Porridge is the best thing for breakfast in my opinion.
Awesome😁 you make it look so easy 😁😁

I have enjoyed watching this series and I saved it to watch it again.
tasters choice instant coffee. the best
Love it Man!
Finally someone that has the right idea, you can only take so many layers off before you get put on a list, no law about puttin more layers on.
"Marlin Spike Hitch" for the bush pot toggle -- great tip! Better than what I was doing and I'll make the change next time out. Thanks!
Ok, the tripod loop was very cool !!! Haven’t seen that before 👍👍👍
Can't beat cowboy coffee. I always made it in the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) on the last day or two at the National Training Center (NTC) during winter rotations. The large generators were usually taken down and only a small one was left on to power the radios. The small generators would trip if a coffee pot was connected.
"I'm pretty sure it's safe to drink... cause I've drank out of it." Absolutely love it.. haha
excellent video and it looked like you had a blast. Thanks for sharing.
Good stuff!

Someday I'd like to have a sanctuary like that of my own.

Hahaha I have used that very same measuring process!!! Yes it is very precise and one must not go light when the coffee is involved!!!
Very good ideas, Thank you very much

In Europe we call this style "turkish coffee", and for a full cultural appropriation (or how I see it, appreciation :P ) we call the cream "caimac". Since I learned how to make it a few years back, I've donated all my other coffee-making devices and I'm left with a simple pot and the stove. Love the brew and it also gives the process a sort of ritualistic aspect.
You exude skill. The way I can tell is that you make everything look effortless. Well done!
Good video. I normally carry instant but I'll have to give this a try. Those choc full o nuts cans make good bush pots.
During my hitchhiking days I camped in a field with trees keeping me hidden from the road and in the middle of the night the road construction people set up the lights which I slept through, I even slept through them turning on the lights. What I didn't sleep through was the jackhammer. It was a rude awakening. Awesome video my friend.
Love the channel Brother! Learning tons of ways to be more efficient with these skills. Keep 'em coming!
that tripod trick was awesome
You have a great voice for this kind of stuff. We need you for Cardinal baseball play by play! Love the work! Honest and forthright. Keep it up!
I usually prefer a birch stirring stick myself but that maple stirred coffe looks good. Gotta try that new technique.
Really enjoy your videos.
