Courage - Sammy Davis Jr.
Музыка
In honor of Juneteenth we are showcasing this rare and powerful civil rights song Sammy recorded in 1965. It was written by Jerry Samuels (who also wrote Sammy's smash hit “The Shelter Of Your Arms” in 1963). We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Samuels and discussed the origins of “Courage”. He believes that in 1965 the lyrics may have been seen as inflammatory, which he regrets to this day. We are now in a different moment in history, a moment where courage is once again needed and is on display every day around the country and the world: “I need courage in a world that tramples on me / Help me stand straight and tall and I’ll face them all / ’Cause I just can’t live if I can’t be free.” Please share with us in the comments your impressions of this song and Sammy’s interpretation of it.

R.I.P., Jerry Samuels. What a beautiful song sung by such an amazing entertainer!
Wow!....What a Wonderful song!...Thank you Lord for courage. 💞
Sammy Davis Jr. is the only one I've known of to record this song, and I see it as one of his very best. Even for the songwriter, Jerry Samuels, I see it as one of HIS best. God Bless them...
The song is very important then and important today! The lyrics by Samuels and the vocals by Sammy Davis Jr. make this a powerful and stirring experience indeed.
I have the promo copy of this song (other side is Yes I Can). I heard this powerful song for the first time a couple of days ago and it really hit me like a sledgehammer to the gut. I can't say I relate but, when I was younger, I faced a little bit of that in South Georgia. This song is a powerful protest song which I rank up there with Sam Cooke's stirring A Change Gonna Come. Do you know if this song was included on any release albums or CD's? I would love to have a cleaner copy of the song to play. Being a radio station promo copy, it's been well played as you can imagine.

Hi Mark! Sadly it was only ever released on a 45.
As a privileged white man, I cannot claim to understand this centuries-old, excruciating struggle. I can say that from at least the age of 11 years old in 1974, I have felt, believed, and acted with the conviction that we are all free! I do my best to demonstrate courage and speak my truth, what I believe is God's truth, that all men were created equal. I will continue to speak that truth on social media, in my family, social circles, and always be a beacon of light for my Black brothers and sisters!!! -Derek in Salt Lake City
In what record can we find this wonderful song?
