I've tried this with 18 gauge and 22 gauge, 26 gauge dead soft copper with no luck. 18 gauge just seems to "squish" together and slippery.

I used to round copper wire - magnet wire (type of wire not used to make jewelry, Its price is very cheap) . it's the only kind I found where I lived for many sizes. I do not know exactly what type it was, can be normal copper wire, it have plating layer, and not dark by time you can change to suit the material you have

Normally I calculate the wire according to stone or circumference : the standard wire length x the ratio of stone or circumference. For example, if the stone is twice as big, we use a wire of double length ( compared to the wire needed with small stones) . However it depends on the sample there are different changes. But with rings, the length of the wire required for each size does not differ much

I use round copper wire for all my products. wire size and length of wire have subtitles in the first part of the clip and in the description ( with new clips, ordinal numbers> 278) you can use any type of wire or wire size you have. Smaller diameter wires are easier to handle, but they are less durable than larger wires.
