I love your funny reactions. I always think it's a shame when people only watch one song at a time. So a lot of the energy and magic is lost. But when you watch a whole concert, you dive deep into a wonderful world of sounds and feelings. You are absolutely right that you have to see the live videos of Nightwish. As beautifully done as the music videos are, they don't come close to a live performance. I'm not going to recommend any song to you, because no matter which one you choose, it will be my favorite Nightwish song at that moment.

Hi Dave & Ash Floor does scrub up nicely, doesn't she 😁 I love the lyric in this song... "Write a lyric for the song only you can understand" ...because this sums up Tuomas' outlook when he writes his lyrics, the meaning of his songs is entirely down to the interperation of the listener, whatever meaning they want to give it

And we Dutchies pronounce élan as "ay-lawn" (n nearly unpronounced) since the accent isn't grave (that would get you an "ehh" as in "set) but aigu. Oc the French copycatted us in their pronunciation 😁

Tuomas loves symbolism; the white owl resembles a spiritual journey, and an owl outside your window is a sign of impending death. The video showing old folks stepping away from the grind and enjoying life just dancing away is a neat message. Love the way they ended it with them all cheering in reality.

This is a special one. Tuomas Holopainen said: "'Oh, while I live to be the ruler of life, Not a slave. To meet life as a powerful conqueror, and nothing exterior to me will ever take command of me.' This beautiful quote from my hero Uncle Walt [Walt Whitman] was the starting point for writing 'Élan'. "The underlying theme of the song is nothing less than the meaning of life, which can be something different for all of us. "It's important to surrender yourself to the occasional 'free fall' and not to fear the path less traveled by." However, I think this song allows you to give it your own interpretation. I think the cheeky boat and troy playing flute is in purpose. They probably were going for a folky version of pied piper combined with Charon like ferryman for the dead. There might be something related from finnish or english/gaelic folklore there also. Its about the joy of living so one can happily and light heartedly move on when the time comes - even though Nightwish is quite strongly secular band and i guess most of the members are strong believers of science.

"I love how versatile Nightwish are..." There is also a lot of side projects and "before" stuff by many of them; Tarot, Northern Kings, Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas, Ragnarok Juletide), ReVamp, After Forever, Northward, Rotten Sound, Wintersun and many more. Deep end is really deep. One of my favorite side stuff is "The Life And Times Of Scrooge" by Tuomas. Christmas is coming and you should hear the best xmas music in the universe, Raskasta Joulua (in finnish) or english versions of some of them, Ragnarok Juletide.

Hello Dave and Ash. Yes, Nightwish is always better live... but this was a fun reaction to this whimsical little video, and Floor looks absolutely gorgeous in her 1940s makeup and garb... not so sure how her tats would go over in the 1940s but they sure look good today. You guys are so funny together and absolutely wonderful. Thank you for continuing to react to our beloved Nightwish with Floor.

Great reaction! First single from the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful which was the first studio album to feature Floor. Thus the more radio friendly style of the song. Tuomas is a genius and can make a radio friendly song sound grand and amazing. Of note, the other actors in the video are all famous Finnish actors although as an American I don't know their names. Troy Donockley is the English gentleman playing the "flute" which is an Irish whistle. In this case a tin whistle and he also plays an Irish Low Whistle and the Uilleann Pipes (Irish Bagpipes). Troy is an amazing multi-instrumentalist and also plays guitar and the Irish Bouzouki. To get more of that folky feel and Troy's Uilleann Pipes you should checkout I Want My Tears Back live from Buenos Aries (Argentinian crowd is nuts in a good way), Elevenjig/Elvenpath, and one of my favorites Last of the Wilds live from Wacken. It's an instrumental that really showcases Troy's whistle and pipe playing. If you like the folky style hear you should also checkout some folk metal bands like Eluveitie, Enisferium, or Saltatio Mortis. Songs to checkout include Inis Mona, Call of the Mountain, Rose for Eponia, Omnos (sung in the ancient Gaulish language of the Helvetios, the celtic tribe that lived on the plains of todays Switzerland until they were wiped out by the Romans.) all by Eluveitie. From Enisferium Lai Lai Hei, Treachorus Gods and Windrider. From Saltatio Mortis, My Mother Told Me, The Dragonborn Comes, Pray to the Hunter, and their folk metal version of Electric Callboy's Hypa Hypa. Love me anything with a Hurdy Gurdy in it.

Finally got the idea about the video when put together floor singing to bartender in an empty restaurant, Tuomas playing piano with a tree grown through and yes, that "cheesy" bit. After all the song is about people who live their day in-day out lives. Both the workers (and the old swimmer in the empty pool), as well as the musicians. And Troy's flute is that brings all of them together. The epic arrival on what (a horseback?) to everybody would have been cheesy.

E acute - sylahn, I suppose. Fun reaction, one of the happy songs... Some background to sing and the video... Oh, while I live to be the ruler of life, not a slave To meet life as a powerful conqueror, and nothing exterior to me will ever take command of me WALT WHITMAN This inspiring quote by Uncle Walt was the starting point for "Elan". The song is all about the meaning of life nothing more, nothing less - something that is different and unique to us all; about cliffs unjumped, paths less travelled. "Élan" is an apt teaser for the forthcoming album without actually revealing anything about its true nature. NIGHTWISH PRESS RELEASE, DECEMBER 8, 2014 VILLE LIPIÄINEN: We originally planned to shoot a video for "Edema Ruh", but the decision to do "Élan" instead was made almost on the fly. One thing led to another, things got out of hand, and in the end, "Élan" became quite of an epic. It's a homage to classic Finnish actors, old, abandoned places that once were full of life, and the miracle and uniqueness of life. The idea was to choose a legendary Finnish actor or actress to accompany each Nightwish member in six different locations around Finland. Finally, the band were also shot against green screen, so all in all, there were a total of twelve shooting days. I think that's the Finnish record what comes to making a music video. At some point, I got the idea to get an owl for the video - the owl had been the Nightwish emblem ever since "The Sacrament of Wilderness" single in 1998, after all - so without further ado, we casted an owl called Urho who lives in the Ähtäri zoo. We built a green screen for him in a local school gym, where his wrangler and a vet were co-directing our star. I wanted to have footage of Utho flying majestically across the skies, but Urho turned out to be a bit of a rock star. He paid no attention to our coaxing and food offers and flew only when he felt like flying. I kept the cameras running pretty much the whole time, and in the end, we had hours and hours of material of Urho scowling, shaking his head at us, and looking totally pissed off. After two days, we finally managed to get a shot we wanted, and those seconds became the flying scene on the video. Oh, how we rejoiced, when Urho finally raised his wings and took off!

If you're after something different (a Nightwish specialty), you should react to "Shoemaker". The lyric (studio) version is excellent, and one of the rare ones that beats the live performances. (A lot gets lost when that one is translated to a big outdoor stage, and it's technically very difficult, even for Floor.) It's vastly improved if you do a wee bit of homework: the Wikipedia page on Eugene Shoemaker will set the scene nicely. (His ashes are on the Moon, which is what inspired the song.)
