Lyrics:
Open up your mind and let me step inside
Rest your weary head and let your heart decide
It's so easy
When you know the rules
It's so easy,
All you have to do
Is fall in love
Play the game,
Everybody, play the game of love (yeah)
When you're feeling down and your resistance is low
Light another cigarette and let yourself go
This is your life
Don't play hard to get
It's a free world
All you have to do is fall in love
Play the game,
Everybody, play the game of love
Ooh, yeah
My game of love has just begun
Love runs from my head down to my toes
My love is pumping through my veins (play the game)
Driving me insane
Come, come, come, come, come play the game, play the game, play the game, play the game
Play the game
Everybody, play the game of love
This is your life
Don't play hard to get
It's a free, free world
All you have to do is fall in love
Play the game, yeah
Play the game of love
Your life
Don't play hard to get
It's a free, free world
All you have to do is fall in love
Play the game
Play the game of love, of love

It’s always magical when Freddie is at the piano. John is always on point. Love how he’s always right behind Freddie , keeping the beat, when he played the piano.

Betty...you’re so right...I heard Freddie say that he likes to have John playing the bass near him when he’s playing the piano🤩

The Tympani or kettledrums you saw on the floor were used by Roger Taylor to perform a drum solo at this same concert in Montreal. The film crew always kept their cameras on Freddie. Love your reactions, both of you. Your knowledge of music and instruments is amazing.

I am REALLY HOOKED on your Queen/Freddie reactions, and so ENJOY especially your perspectives on Fred’s piano playing etc. To me, I think this must be one of the HARDEST songs to sing, with all the “drastic ups & downs” of the notes… along with “It’s A Hard Life” (and - even MORE so - “Soul Brother”!🤯😳) There is another live performance of “Play The Game” that someday you NEEED to check out (not necessarily film another reaction if you don’t want to, but watch it anyway)… again, for “what he does to his piano!😄 Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982! The FASCINATING thing about Freddie is how completely DIFFERENT a song can be from one performance to another, and this is one of those examples. (And I LOVE both these versions equally). The performance at Milton Keynes, tho, I think of as “Freddie beating up his poor piano while standing up”.😅 Other examples of how COMPLETELY DIFFERENT a song can be performed from one show to another: “Somebody To Love” at Montreal vs Milton Keynes Bowl “Another One Bites The Dust” at Montreal vs Wembley Stadium “Now I’m Here” at The Rainbow (1974) vs Wembley Stadium (1986)

Roger said Freddie would often change things from the original or from one night to another just to keep it interesting so it's not repetitive but that he always made intelligent choices ( still made sense) and it didn't change what they could do hope that makes sense!?

Yes they are Timpani drums Roger does an epic drum solo at the end of Keep Yourself Alive then moves on to the Timpani then it moves on to Brian’s guitar solo maybe another one to add to your list 😉 keep up the great reactions x

I loved everything in the Montreal concert, every single song just perfectly done. You can see those moments when Freddie was especially pleased with his vocals and that incredible vibrato of his, Roger nailing his vocals as well, such an amazing band each with so much talent.

Absolutely agree with all of your comments in this reaction. This is a perfect example of why Queen is considered one of the best live bands EVER. This song is powerful in an almost subtle way, if that makes any sense. The chord progressions and harmonies - something Queen is famous for, and for good reason. Perfection. And the way Queen performs this song with such apparent effortlessness, and yet there is so much going on….but not too much. Just the right amount. None of it is easy for “mere mortals.” But for the members of Queen, they give us a (well-rehearsed but not stale) performance like this and they make it look so easy. This was before autotune and before everyone wore earpieces on stage. Another live Queen performance that is better than the studio version of the song. I’ll never get tired of that! Thanks for this reaction!

As I remember this was their last concert without an extra pianist (Morgan Firsher and later Spike Edney), because Freddie didn't want to sit so much at the piano, he loved running around the stage and interacting with the audience as you have already seen his acting from time to time. I love this song with its weird/special notes. (There is a very talented young pianist in Hungary who did some Queen covers in his own style, if you want to watch him check his play out just for your pleasure: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hItoxdFyqtXSYrw.html )

Also Fred Mandel. Looks like Morgan Fisher did the European run of the 1982 Hot Space tour and Fred Mandel did the North American and Japan part of that tour. Spike did the1984 tour and beyond although Fred Mandel continued to work with them on studio projects for a few more years between Elton John tours/albums. Thanks for naming Morgan Fisher. I knew there was someone before Fred Mandel but did not know who it was.

I really like that you pointed out Freddie is not selfish and if the cameras are focused on him on the stage he takes the focus to them, not so much John but only because John didn't like to be in the spot light too much I see a lot of comments ' not just about Freddie' I'm bias my focus is usually on him! but it's not that Freddie wants all the focus, he never had the attitude on stage that it was him and ' a band' but they were a band if that makes sense

I think this song originated from a breakup. Freddie had discovered that one of his lovers had cheated. Freddie often used anger as a springboard to become creative both in his music and his performances. Love your reactions and your enthisiasm for Queen.

If you want to see Roger drum his ass off you must listen to my favourite Queen song: "Somebody to love " from 1981 in Montreal - and he sings too!! simultaneously . You must remember that they make an album and then they tour the whole world to promote it - -and then they make another album - and so on - and they rehearse - -and then they have the popular ones that engage the crowd . And they are not "nodetro" - jeg ved ikke hvad det hedder på engelsk - they improvise a lot - and the others follow - so it is never boring - for them either. Brian and Roger have been playing together - on and off - for 55 years now !!! It is a Pauke - in danish - it is tuned - you can see them in symphony orchestraes - there is often 4 or 5 tuned in different notes. There is a big gong as well - it is used to end Bohemian Rhapsody .
