Couple Builds Incredible Earthbag Cistern With A Gabion Retaining Wall To Harvest Rain | Full Build

Couple Builds Incredible Earthbag Cistern With A Gabion Retaining Wall To Harvest Rain | Full Build
Water is essential to the growth and maintenance of a homestead. In trying to be self-sufficient and more sustainable, we built a large cistern out of earthbags. This massive cistern will hold close to 14,000 gallons of water. Definitely one of our biggest projects to date.

We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

you might want to test the cistern to see if it holds water. Have that big truck full of water come and empty the truck into the cistern, then measure the water level periodically to see if the level remains constant. you should do this before the rains come, this is important since they are shutting off water supply in your area. if it does not hold you would have to repair with a new liner and this time do not cut the liner. put outside pipes over edge of liner, not through it.

Well that tells me just how much time I'm saving myself to pay due premium. I normally hate paying the upgrade for free services but it got to the point of an ad every minute. By the time you get done, you have to watch again to figure out what you lost track is with all the SFAs (stupid ads).

Used to make the liners at Seamans in Bradenton Florida. I help feed the thick black vinyl through the rotary welder. I would drag it back, across the floor, then climb up on a heavy crate, and feed it to the welder operator. So I would lift it up over my shoulder, and give her enough slack to smoothly make the welds. Wrestling with liners in triple digits, makes for a lot of sweat.

We plan to do a similar structure, starting this spring. Thank you. A few questions: 1) What literature and videos you used prior to begin doing it? 2) How did you keep each layer of earth bags level? How well leveled it should be? 3) Where did you get a liner and how to properly line it? 4) What earth bags would you recommend? 5) What kind of homemade level did you make to level the bottom of the excavation? 6) How did you rise the poles from the center to keep it level with each layer of earth bags 7) Shasugi ban for the roof, is new for us. Where we can find more info? Do we buy a specific wood? Where to buy a torch for it? What oil and brash do you use? How did you secured the rafters and trusses and to what did you secure the wood that is on the bags? 8) Did you have to get permits and inspections for this construction? If yes, then exactly what? 9) Why you choose a cylindrical shape instead of rectangular prism?

Amazing! You guys are Amazing and an inspiration. I agree with you Jim, how building something gives you such a sense of accomplishment. You both should be so proud of your cistern. I especially like the fact that so many of your materials were right there on your land. I love watching your channel. You always make me smile. Wishing you two the best.

My two favourite 'Green Dream Working Machines' showing us how easy they made it look to produce this cistern. But I'm sure it was anything but. The Gabion wall around it, as well as functional also makes it look great. Hope you have enough rocks around on your land to use/need them on the house as well, as they would look so cool. Greetings from yr best New Zealand viewer : )

Amazing project. Would be great to see a "Day Counter" to understand how long it took y'all. Also a breakdown of the costs at the end of the video. Good luck!

Thank you! We have visitors from time to time, but we usually don't have people help with the build. I don't think we're quite set up for that.

Looking at the finished aerial view, an idea comes to mind... why nor build a dome as a roof/cover fir the Cistern? Then it can be visually inspected much easier? Heck, why not have some lights pre-installed on the walls!!
