The countries of North America have pretty much been the same for the last hundred years so. But there were dozens of different countries before the lines on the map became what they are today. In this video, we’ll look at some countries that used to exist before the 20th century.

According to TrustPilot, Skill Share has a rating of 1.5 stars out of 5. Why would you promote a service with so many negative reviews, that clearly is NOT better than KZread?

Pretty interesting! Did you know that Australia was originally soposed to be several different countries? In 1901, they decided to join up and become one country. Thats why each state has a different railway gague, which causes a lot of problems today.

In fact in the Australian Constitution it names as potential Federal States New Zealand and Fiji.
Thanks
Hanna-Barbera's choice of Ruff and Reddy as their first characters now makes complete sense. Thanks for today's rabbit hole.
I live near Rough And Ready and had no idea. Idk if they could ever have been a country, they dont even have a grocery store
You and your channel is awesome and they used to teach this in school in the North Eastern USA until about 1989 until they cut it way back and lumped it in with three other courses in the Western Pennsylvania school system.😉
I've been in Rough and Ready, 1982, when visiting a friend in Penn Valley, Grass Valley.
What prompts did you use to generate those historical paintings?
That Walker guy definitely deserves his own video. Absolute madlad challenged the authority of two nations with just 45 men behind his back.
You forget Freedononia in east Texas.

I live off highway 7. Freedonia street. On Rifle road. The Marx brothers came and visited Nacogdoches a long time ago Their mother was a miser. In a journey from Nacogdoches to Shreveport the marx brothers mother was critisied by a railway conductor. One of your sons is having a shave and your other son is drinking a beer. And you try and say they are minors? There is roaches in Nacogdoches..

No Vermont Republic?
Pretty cool
Terrifying AI art, thank you
The real reason the Republic of Rough & Ready called it quits was so they could get unfettered access to the Szabo Vineyards up there.
This video is misnamed as it deals almost exclusively with the USA, nor does it mention the Republic of Vermont. I wondered why the US had not tried to take Baha California as part of its later acquisitions and see there was at let a private attempt to do so. However, really apart from the Canadian colonies which confederated there is no mention of Newfoundland which did not join up in 1867 and remained independent as a Commonwealth Dominion until it joined Canada in 1948. Newfoundland therefore had national battle honours in WW1 and WW2 alongside Australia, South Africa, NZ and Canada.

So, so interesting. Actual countries that are nonexistent today. You're like my geography teacher, I swear. :)
“We, the citizens of Rough and Ready, do solemnly swear… we want to be served alcohol this 4th of July.” God bless America.🍺🎉🇺🇸
Geography is very important, but Language also is... all Countries have a centralised State system.
When a video of tricontinental Chile and its great marine territory number 10 in the world? 😔
How could you mention Texas without talking about the Vermont Republic? It lasted 14 years while Texas only lasted 10.

Talking about the Vermont Republic is a bit like villagers talking about the hermit who lives in the woods and never comes to town
@YukonGhibli

Because it was self proclaimed, not recognised, nor did it do the things that countries actually do. Texas had currency, an army and navy, embassies/legations at home and abroad, and was recognised by several major world powers. Ditto Hawai'i.

@@YukonGhibli Vermont had its own currency, militia, constitution, governor, elections, etc. It wasn't recognized because the land was still claimed by New York and the other 13 colonies did not want to admit it to the union. It sure wasn't part of New York at that point, so what was it then?

@@halfgeek1394 Not a country just like the California Republic was not a country and the state of Franklin was never a state. Facts are stubborn things.
What about da countries dat were established 1400s or 1500s when Spain and other people were here
The California Republic Lives!
UP for succession or statehood !
Don't forget Vermont! A pretty interesting but easily forgettable one.
