'Countries that go to court' for deciding poll results giving us 'gyan': Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday hit out at the Western media over the “negative” coverage of Indian elections. He said 'countries that have to go to court for deciding election results” are giving “gyan” on conducting polls.
While speaking at the launch of the Bangla edition of his book 'Why Bharat Matters' in Kolkata EAM S Jaishankar said on Tuesday "They western countries do want to influence us because many of these countries feel that these countries have influenced this world for the last 70-80 years. Western countries feel that they have influenced this world for the last 200 years. How do you expect for someone, who has been in that position to give up those old habits so easily".

It is unfortunate but we have an unprincipled opposition parties led by Gandhi family, and parties like DMK, TMC etc. that just opposing every government policy for opposing shake. Let the ruling party try to pursue them to follow a positive opposition policies. This may be test for government but it will be in interest of the nation which must come at top…

It is unfortunate situation that those leaders in industry could have helped how to make manufacturing inside the country have very little interest in any big goal for the nation. They are busy in building up property for their clan at all cost. They could have produced many industrialists from among their own employees but they will not do rather they will discourage someone who wish to do it.

Have some self respect. Don’t you want several Indian universities which are some top universities of the world. Get over this colonised mindset that only “foreign” universities are good. 57:30 While I respect Dr. JaiShankar tremendously and I agree with the point that he is making here, I want to add another aspect to this. As an NRI, I feel people also go outside the country for the better quality of life in terms of public infrastructure including transportation, education, health infrastructure and quality and experience of the governance. Somewhere I percieve that India lacks in the last part, that is - quality and experience of governance. The Indian system is still terrible in terms of ease of compliance, police security and rule of law and corruption at the lowest levels of government. There is no assurance that if someone gets into legal trouble, the system will give them a prompt and fair resolution. When someone goes to the police station, there is no assurance that things won't be turned against you due to political influence or financial incentive to the police. When you have to go to court, you're stuck for years together. Even after the many years struggle, there's no assurance that the judgment would be fair and free of any undue outside influences (except at the highest levels of the court system). People talk about expansion of health infrastructure by forcing doctors to work in rural settings under bond contracts, however no effort is made to provide quality schools and other public amenities in the areas being served by the personnel going for rural service - this is just an example, the larger point being that we don't look at problems holistically to solve the issues, it's just a patchwork of haphazard rules. Then there's the issue of tax terrorism and compliance terrorism - people are harassed by so called public servants or officials for small infractions which can be settled or addressed by making government processes very streamlined. We talk about ease of doing business, however the focus should also be on ease of living within the society.

But that doesn't necessarily mean whatever others are saying is wrong. There is no denying the fact that press and media, respected and trusted to be the 4th pillar of democracy has lost all their credibility. Even if it's 5th largest economy, what's about per capita income, human development indexes, not talking about happiness index. You have made people forced to live a life of distress and fear. Please ask your conscience, if anything still there, will give you an honest reply
