Additionally, the modern Indian state has existed since 1526 AD. In 1526, Babur proclaimed the empire of Hindustan, or in English, the Indian Empire. The East India Company operated formally on the authority of the Emperor till 1830. In 1858, the House of Babur was deposed and in 1876, Queen Victoria was proclaimed Kaiser of Hindustan or Empress of India and brought back the Indian Empire officially (you can see the passports). The British territory in the Indian Empire was British India, from which in 1947 the Dominion of India was created, which UN recognised as the continuation of the Empire of India.

But as a civilization, American civilisation is only 500 or so years old ever since the Spanish found America (not counting the natives, whose civilisation has got nearly wiped out), while European civilization is atleast 2000 years old, and the oldest civilisations like China, India, Mesopotamia, Egypt are more than 5000 years old.

You should talk about countries and regimes rather than civilisation. So if we take France, we have... well, France, which is more than 1000 years old (987 for France and the 5th century for the Frankish kingdom, which is considered the first iteration of France, especially since Paris was the capital of the Frankish kingdom from 508). Whereas for the regime we have the (fifth) French Republic which is 63 years old. The distinction is important because in one case we take into account only the people and the territory, while in the other it is the type of governance that is taken into account

Fun fact: as San Marino is the oldest living country, it is also the only country who saw the empire of rome desintegrate. Thus, it has an annual celebration where it conmemorates the empire Edit 4: Egypt was invaded by the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the British, so it was not a country until it got indepencence from this last one on the 18th of June 1953. India was invaded by the British and it was not a country until it got indepencence on the 15th of august 1947 China was invaded by the mongols, so it stopped existing for a few decades, and the three kingdoms that were always emerging tore the country apart, being the last time this happened on the 1st of October of 1949 Iran has nothing to do with Mesopotamia or Persia, and it was ALSO invaded by the mongol empire and the British, so it was not a country until the 1st of April of 1979 Greece was whiped out by the Romans and the Ottomans, so it was not a country until it got indepencence from this last one the 3rd of February of 1830 Please, shut up, the comment was about a celebration in San Marino and it ended up being a stupid 300+ people discussion. @@ravysaini127 India was never a single unified country until after it gained independence from Britain after WWII (the closest it came was the Mauryan Empire which fell in 185 BCE. Egypt has a very ancient history as a unified state, but it was conquered by Rome, then by the Rashidun Caliphate, then eventually broke off as part of the Fatimid Caliphate, then was part of the Ayyubid kingdom of Saladin fame before falling to the Maluks and ultimately the Ottoman Empire again. After the Ottomans fell it was a British colonial possession until its indepedence as the modern country of Egypt in 1952, making the modern country of Egypt only 70 years old despite a history going back four thousand years. It's the same reason China isn't considered ancient in this list, as the modern PROC isn't considered a direct successor to the preceding dynastic empires.

I have made a google sheet where it calculates the total points of each country. They way this works is that in each video, a country will get a certain amount of points depending on how well they did. For example, if a country did the best in that particular video, they would get 10 points. if they got 2nd, they would get 9 points. If they got 3rd, they would get 8 points. And so on. I also took into account videos where being first might not be being the best. So for example in Countries Scaled by Alcoholism Germany would get the least points because it drank the most. I am also working on a sheet similar but it divides the total amount of points with the amount of videos for more accuracy. Anyway, here is the top 15 Countries as of Countries Scaled by McDonald’s 1st: United States 182 Points 2nd: India 136 Points 3rd: Canada 120 Points 4th: Russia 107 Points 5th: United Kingdom 105 Points 6th: China 103 Points 7th: Australia 87 Points 8th: Sweden 58 Points 9th: New Zealand 48 Points 10th: Japan 46 Points 11th: Italy 45 Points 12th: Poland 41 Points 13th: Germany 38 Points 14th: France 30 Points 15th: Mexico 26 Points

We were 500 years under ottoman rule (~1313-1878), but people never forgot they were Bulgarians, so I am not sure how this fits in with the theme of oldest countries. San Marino is the oldest independent state that has remained so from the past. If we widen the criteria a bit I am sure we will see countries like Greece, Bulgaria and Egypt too.

Clarification: San Marino is the oldest CONTINUOUSLY EXISTING country in the world. The oldest "state" entities date back at least about 5,000 years (although states in a modern sense only began to form during the 15th and 16th century). The Empire of Japan is the other obvious contestor, but it has changed a lot during its history and while its monarchy is certainly the oldest in the world, its statehood and state continuity is at least debatable. However, it is certain that San Marino is the oldest still existing republic and the oldest still existing stable state.

Difficult to determine how old a country is, India/Egypt/etc have existed as a region basically for ever but as a State? Not so much. Take the UK for example, it only goes back to 1707AD however the Kingdom of Scotland goes back to 843AD and Kingdom of England goes back to 927AD. It gets more confusing since the Kingdom of England could be considered a re-branding of the Kingdom of Wessex which goes back to 519AD. And that before you get into the debate about whether the Viking and later Norman conquest "end" the earlier Kingdom causing the post 1016AD and then 1066AD Kingdoms of England to be distinct. And I'm sure every other nation has issues like this.

A little fun fact, but there is actually an organization called the Anglospheres. There's three tiers from what I can remember. UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and USA are the top tier- meaning that they are essentially allies regardless. I mainly recall military and economic aid, but there may have been a few others as well. It's been a while since I looked this up, but figured it would be a neat little thing to bring up. Speaking of organizations, that may be an interesting search and scaled by video 'how many organizations is a country part of'. There's at least one for every country given the UN. And a strange side note I just recalled, BRICS. Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are economic allies/development, but only on that front.

The term United Kingdom first emerged in 1707 with the Act of Union with Scotland, while the suffix stating what was United changed in 1801 and 1922 - but, of course, the constituent bits of the UK are a fair bit older... England dates back to 927 (Unification of Angles, Saxons and Danes). Scotland first emerged sometime in the 9th century, and remained independent until the Acts of Union in 1707. Wales was Unified in 1057, but didn't remain independent for long, with the Statute of Rhuddlan incorporating English common law in 1284, then the territory being annexed into England (and losing any distinct legal identity) in 1536 with Henry VIII's Laws in Wales Acts, with the legal definition of Wales only being reestablished in 1967 with the repealing of the Wales and Berwick Act 1746, while devolution took place in 1999. Northern Ireland was established in 1921, and the Irish Free State (then part of the Commonwealth) in 1922 (becoming a completely separate Republic in 1949). Ireland was originally established sometime in the 1st Century AD, but England claimed sovereignty over it from the 12th Century, began to colonise it from the 16th-17th Century, and formally incorporated it inch the UK with the 1801 Acts of Union.

@@soIzec The idea of country came in 18th century Europe. Before that there were city-states, kingdoms, empires, which not necessarily have the same kind of people, like a normal country would, empires were mostly multi-cultural, there were numerous ethnicities, sometimes different religions. For a country, there should be some unifying factors. Mostly it's race and language, but there are some countries which are diverse. For example, India, it's unifying factor is, it's people are part of the same ancient civilization, and the other unifying factor is same culture. There are other countries which are also diverse, like Singapore or USA, but they are not like they were formed in that way, it's because of immigration.

There was no central Japanese state back then, and the earliest written record of Japan was in the Early Middle Ages. Japan was only united around 1590 and even then it was a different regime in power until the Japanese Empire that the Western colonialists helped defeat the shoguns and samurai. Its current monarchy for ceremonial purposes after 1945 isn't that special when other historical dynasties have plenty of living descendants too.
