THANK YOU SO MUCH. Words cannot describe how happy I was to have it finally click in my head. I’ve had a math disability since kindergarten, i’m now a senior in high school and this really helped. I haven’t been able to get a job due to the fear of not being able to give change back, but it makes so much sense now! Thank you for this video.

Good news is you don’t have to do it in your head- the register does the actual math. Your job is to enter the numbers accurately and then pull out the right dollars and coins in return!

Thank you so much! I am 18 and have gone through 3 cashier jobs (only part-time jobs available that isn’t waitress or receptionist) and I have gotten fired for my drawer being short multiple times (biggest is $20) I have social anxiety and with the customers rambling, my first instinct is to get them out so I just try to give them close to the money without counting twice. I’ve received a lot of negative feedback from older people since I take too much time trying to count.

its okay, you're VERY young but also, if you're like me, it's crazy hard to stay focused on something like counting money (especially when a customer pays a large amount in ones) and not lose count with everything going on around me. you'll be fine tho, i'm impressed you have the resolve to continue after 3 cashier jobs 💯

Use a calculator at the till or work somewhere that has tills that show change, you input exactly what they give you and the screen shows change even on older tills there is a way to show but always have a calculator and say to customer you just want to be sure you're not shorting them

That's not how you count back change. You count back to the amount that they gave you. so if it was $11.30 and they gave you a 20 he would start by giving them the $0.70 and saying 12 then give them the $3 by saying 13, 14, 15 and then give them a five and say 20. That's how you ensure that you gave them back the correct change.

Amen Sister! I was thinking the same thing! A computer (the cash register) is only as reliable as the human that programs it. So if your clerk types in $200 instead of $20 (by mistake...which happens often) then the clueless clerk gives them back the wrong change.....because they obviously can't count in the first place or they wouldn't rely on the computer (register) to determine how much change they give back! Went to Walgreens. Gave her a $20 bill for a balance due of $11.50. She accidentally typed in $200...then promptly flipped out and said she needed to call over a manager. I explained to her that if she would get .50 from the drawer, that would make $12, then 3 ones (13, 14, 15 dollars) then a $5 bill (making $20), the change would be accurate....she didn't get it. Called over the manager and I had to explain it to her as well....ugh.....I was searching for an accurate video to show my staff, but am having an extremely hard time. Guess I'll have to make my own!

Make sure to give them the change on top of the bills so they have to set it down and separate the change from bills before putting away. It is also coming practice to put the receipt on top so it immediately blows away.

So many people are commenting that he didn't count the change back properly. The point of the video was to give tips on how to protect the cashier, customer, and store, not give a math lesson. The register displays how much is owed back to the customer, so cashiers have to count that amount out loud when giving it to them. This ensures that no bills are stuck together and that you counted properly the first time, in your head. Now if the register freezes up or you accidentally hit cash tender, then you can use the 'correct' method. But trust me, doing that confuses most people. I have trained probably over 500 cashiers in my 20 retail years. Most need a calculator to figure out amounts if the register fails. :/ And most just hand the change back to customer without counting it to them, until trained.

I ran the place out of a cigar box with a calculator. Later when the power came on and we closed the shift I was off 3 cents.

It is not the proper way to count change, which is not only the most important part of the process, but the title of your video. never put the amount given to you... always hit total and leave the amount of sale in the window. got $20 in hand $17.59 (or what have you) is your total and then count out of the register up to your bill amount and then back to the customer. $.01=.60 $.10+$.05+$.25+$18+$1+$1=$20

To all you other cashiers out there- did you notice the coins went in the BOTTOM OF HER HAND.??? That has a benefit where the coins will not slide out of her hand like it does off paper. All you beginner cashiers just don't seem to understand that OBVIOUS PROBLEM. If the coins are in her hand first she can either put them in her purse or pocket or even grab the paper money with far less chance of dropping the coins and can even put the paper money in a billfold and STILL not lose the coins. If you don't count out the coins ,fine but you STILL will put the coins in her hand first. Get rid of that damn smart ass attitude when the customer tells you proper way to do your job INCLUDEING leaving the bill that is handed you crossways on the drawer. If your boss tells you otherwise stand up to your boss. HE IS WRONG !!!!!

You are exactly the type of person that makes retail so horrible. It’s not about what you prefer, it’s about what is easiest for the cashier so that they can serve you quickly. You aren’t the only customer, and there are a lot of customers who prefer cash first then coins. You can’t please everyone. Some like coins first, some like cash first. Some want the receipt in the bag, some want it with the bills and some don’t want it period. Get rid of the ENTITLED attitude because you’re not special. Your money doesn’t mean you have a right to treat people like they’re your personal ATM machine. You’re not a manager so you don’t have the authority to tell anyone how to do their job. You’ll be a lot happier in life if you stop being so bitter.

I've come in contact with some of the dumbest cashiers ever !!! 1 time on Maui at McDonald's I ordered 4 items from the $1 menu and my total was $4.17...I gave the cashier a $5 bill and .17 in coins and she was LOST !!!...another time at Soup Plantation in LA the guy in line in front of me gave the young boy cashier a $100 bill and the man's total was $36.42...the young cashier was LOST !!!...the man wouldn't help him, he just stared at him...in 2 seconds I taught the boy how 2 count up and he looked up at me with surprise and asked, " so that's how u do that ??? "...that's just 2 of the many experiences I've encountered with clueless cashiers... EVEN TODAY with computer cash registers that TELL the cashier how much change 2 give back some still get it so wrong !!!
