BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

    Surprised Rachel didn't find the "x7" route: 10 x 5 = 50 50 - 5 = 45 45 + 75 = 120 120 + 2 = 122 122 x 7 = 854

Haha, after the second one, divisible by 7 was the first thing I checked for the 3rd - surprised Rachel didn't see it! (Although she did have time to both not find that, and also find the way she did, so still way ahead of me) 5 x10 = 50 75 + 50 = 125 5-2 = 3 125 - 3 = 122 122 x 7 = 854

For 539 she could have also gone 8-3 for 11, 9-2 for 7, then 11x7 for 77 which times 7 is 539. This seems a little more elegant as it produces the prime factors, but it also brings to mind that we should forgive her a slightly off day on the 7s.

    I went for 77 x 7, knowing that 9 x 8 x 7 = 504, and if you add on the 5 (3 + 2) before multiplying by the last 7, you can do it exactly.

The 539 isn't even all that difficult if you stick to "use what you have". You can see within a second that dividing by 9 or by 8 won't give you a direct solution, so you try 7 and notice that it works. And then you can do the same with 854 which has the 10 that does not give a direct solution, so again, try 7 and bingo. Obviously, most of the time dividing by 7 won't give you a direct solution either, but practising the 7x table is still quiet helpful for this game.

No but he said his son (watching at home) would give him a bonus point if he used all the numbers. Sometimes contestants like to show off by using all of the numbers and it's annoying as it just wastes everyone's time. One thing I like about Colin is that he's criticized people for doing that in the past. In this case, the contestant had a personal reason for doing so but it was still unnecessary.
