One thing that you made me remember is that someone alreandy did a video of survival in a video game world, the person talked about minecraft. "Why You Wouldn't Survive Minecraft's Overworld" by Wow Such Gaming Maybe that video can help you have some ideas? For example, he bring up how food in minecraft will not heal the person, but the healing potion will heal. Hehe, there is a magical healing potions in zelda, but mario heal with coins, can the coins affect a regular human? Would a 1up from mario affect a regular human?

Personally, I feel the safety rating should at least be a 1. Sure, your death is inevitable in this world, but your death is inevitable in any world at some point. Here you would get to live for some time before dying. A rating of 0/5 indicates to me that you are guaranteed to die pretty much immediately. Just my 2 cents ofc. Love this video idea! Excited to see more

Another world where the main villain is off becoming too suavemente to stop while you're busy just trying to live your life. Bonus points for Midgar being a corpocratic hellhole, but that's not as out-of-context a problem to deal with as world-ending supernatural horrors.

Between this video and the OoT one, he's decided he's not going to acknowledge such facts even when they're brought to his attention. Like he said at the beginning of this video: he's treating it exactly as what you see is what you get, so even though there are roads, nobody is using them except whatever people (if any) are shown for a fact to be using them during said flashback. So they exist for no reason whatsoever. Makes no sense whatsoever and makes these vids impossible to enjoy for me. Unsubbed tbh.

​@@PretzelYT if you end up doing it, there's a character in the diner that implies that no one ever needs to use the bathroom. Not because monsters don't have the ability, but because their food and drink or just taken up that efficiently. Now, I'm not sure if this information should be taken at face value, or if Toby Fox is simply implying a difference between monster and human anatomy and the character misunderstands that difference, but the distinction is interesting, and would have an impact on your ability to live there longer than the >24 hours the player is in the Underground. Because regardless of the truth about monster food, monsters explicitly do not have bathrooms.

​@@benjaminoechsli1941Humans can "relieve" themselves without bathrooms. There's plenty of water, though not sure if it is safe to drink without boiling. Fortunately, there are stoves and other areas to boil water (like Alphys's lab). The problem might be food. Not sure if the magical food are nutritious or can only simply heal wounds. Depression from insufficient sunlight / vitamin D / serotonin might be a huge factor.

@@AkaiAzul My point is that the Underground loses major "thrive" points in that regard. The point about needing sunlight is a good one, though. Fortunately, the start and the end of the game _do_ have patches of sunlight, but that's probably barely enough.

Dang, and I thought Ganondorf’s mere existence in Ocarina of time was bad, but Sephiroth gave us the first 0/5 in the series.

Sephiroth made me realize that we NEEDED a zero. But perhaps there will be some villain in another game so evil that we need to dip into the negatives... 🤔

Regarding Safety, there's also another aspect that's incredibly important: the Shinra-company. Their monopoly on harnessing the most important energy source in the world basically makes them world-dominant and a dangerous force affecting the livelihoods and opportunities of all citizens - and also basically being a catalyst for the actions of the force-of-nature that is Sephiroth.

Someone else pointed that out, I completely forgot about Shinra. I'm not sure if there's a timeframe given in-game, but I FEEL LIKE Sephiroth's plan would succeed before they completely run out of Mako. If Sephiroth IS stopped and Shinra is allowed to continue on siphoning Mako from the planet, I genuinely don't know what would happen. Maybe it'd be like the Blight from FF16 where living life would just slowly die out, idk.

And it seems that Cloud and his team was basically necessary for both parties to be defeated. Or perhaps some of the other characters from the spinoffs could pull it off, as others mention...

@@PretzelYT Was I wrong to expect a negative number? because its aspects can actually detract from the other elements that make the world liveable. Also we should re rate the other worlds so to include the new topics when this whole thing was still new to get the true score. As for safety least with LOZ you could work a way to stop Gannondorf before he gets to that point so its not all lost. Sephiroth though?...Many gaming hero's and villains have fallen to him Cloud only manages to get the one up on him after an absolute ton of character development, and support. Id say if your swapping places with Cloud its a 0/5 by default cause your not defeating edgy anime angel man. But if you actually were added to the world without taking things away from it id give it a 2.5/5. Its precarious but you could with communal effort and cloud still being in the world be able to stop both Sephiroth, and Shrinra.

Well, without Cloud Diamond and the other weapons would explode Shinra, so they would be gone.

I do think that, since we _know_ Sephiroth is seeking the black materia to summon Meteor, and we know that without Cloud's intervention he will definitely succeed eventually, trying to survive would necessarily involve us trying to intervene in Cloud's place. Of course, how _well_ we could do that would be its own question... (for reference see every self-insert fanfic ever :p )

So on stopping Sephy, Genesis exists, and said he'd be sleeping until the time the world needs him to be a hero. Now Genesis' track record against Steph isn't the best but he exists, as do other powerful characters like Vincent so you could argue if genesis felt the world was in danger without cloud, he could wake up and form a party

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about Genesis. It's been so long since I played that game. I mostly wanted to stick to the plot and world details from this game rather than looking at all the different spinoffs and even the Remake, but I guess it could have done me some good to refresh myself on the story of Crisis Core hahaha

Interesting point, but Genesis is literally canon fodder-level compared to even base Crisis Core level Sephiroth. So compared to demigod Seph and Jenova? Yeah. You would need quite the assembly of people with Genesis to attempt anything. But who knows?

Clearly, Sephiroth isn't a problem, because if Cloud is in the Real World now, Sephiroth is on his way to haunt him there :P

I'd probably pick Rocket Town due to liking the style of houses there a lot. Admittedly the fact that Cosmo Canyon appears to get by with only wind power is good considering the obvious issues with mako.

Oh man I didn't even consider the mako situation. Thinking about it now, I have a feeling Sephiroth would summon Meteor before Shinra ran out of Mako. That's just a guess though. If Sephiroth is stopped somehow, then I'm with you. Move to a place that's already not so reliant on Mako. Midgar would have a hard time adjusting if the Mako stopped flowing.

@@PretzelYT I know it's beyond the scope of the game but didn't Advent Children feature Barret looking into other power sources? Really, mako was always going to destroy the world even if Sephiroph didn't anyway due to using the Lifestream, so its use wasn't sustainable (at least the "500 years later" scene at the very end of the game shows that Gaia will eventually recover).

The twist to this narrative is that since we swap places with him, would Cloud survive in our world?

The reason the player does not see the infrastructure for farms and transport lines is because in most games, it isn't necessary to the player or the story. If you have a deadline, then a heap of barley fields, cow pens, slaughterhouses, and mills aren't high on the list of things to make. FFVII especially has a lot of houses that serve no purpose beyond fleshing out the world as is. In the case of games that have established settlements, big or small, it's safe to assume unless otherwise stated that they have a reliable source of both food and water.

I kinda like this series idea because it's a chance to audit the world. See how realistic it truly is, if someone could actually survive if they were put into it. I go back and forth on it honestly. I think it makes sense from the developer's perspective to not include literally EVERYTHING that a functioning society would need. We don't NEED to see all the little things in the real world that keep our society afloat, things like sewage treatment plants, post offices, whatever. Though I guess it's more interesting to talk about games that DO have things like that, rather than games that don't. It's interesting to point out that a developer truly did think of and include super minute details that help a world appear realistic. It's not so interesting to talk about all the other games that didn't think of or chose not to include stuff like that. I'll have to think about it some more...

I'd like to think that my view of the world changes depending on the scenario I'm in. Regular day to day life is the blocky low-poly field models. If I get into an argument with someone then it changes to the battle view and the battle theme plays. Important life events like birthdays, graduation and weddings switch to FMV cutscenes.

For me, my favorite place in the entire game has to be Midgar. Sure it's a very cyber-punk-ish yet very militaristic city but it has a charm that i can't escape it. Another place that i would love to live in would be Cosmo Canyon, it has a lot to offer when it comes to the knowledge of nature and how the planet works plus it reminds me a lot of a very dear friend of mine.

I can understand why someone would want to live in Midgar. I'm not a big city person myself, so I'd personally pick a more chill place, but I see where you're coming from. Cosmo Canyon would be cool too, but I'm not sure how I'd adapt to the climate there 😅

Regarding Sephiroth's plan, if Cloud isn't around to stop Shinra from gathering the huge Materia, does their plan to gather them and properly augment them into the rocket allow it to fully blow up Meteor? Sephiroth killed all of his pawns, so without that he's just a weirdo in a crater.

Every town has a chocobo ranch and usually some form of private business running transportation.

I feel like Sephiroths plan has the potential to be stopped without Cloud. Shinra had a plan to stop the meteor, they strapped a hug matira to rocket and were gonna blow the meteor up. Without Cloud, that plan wouldn't be stopped. They also have the Sister Ray, which could potentially destroy the meteor or knock it off course as it is insanely powerful. Then, there's the weapons, 2 of which are significantly stronger than Sephiroth, one is weaker, one may or may not be, and the other is saphire. The weapons, besides saphire probably, wouldn't be defeated without Cloud. The weapons banding together could definitely stop the meteor, and most likely Sephiroth as well. They would also go expolde shinra as well, as they were actively trying to do that, but were stopped by Cloud. The weapons only go after threats to the planet, so as long as you aren't one, you'll be fine. If you want to go the extended ff7 media, Omega and Minerva are the table as well. Minerva is just god, and also likely stronger than Sephiroth, then Omega would just poof you back into the life stream and bring you to a new planet should Sephiroth not be able to be stopped. Given all of that, i think survival would be like a 3 at worst. Youd have the weapons to deal with, but as long as you don't threaten the planet, you'll be fine.

I would assume if the World has food establishments, food is probably managed in some way... Some things just naturally imply others, unless explicitly stated otherwise... Edit: I guess my opinion on the Map scale is that the map is roughly to scale, but the settlements in it aren't... Idk, maybe that's just me.

8:41 Sephiroth was able to enter the temple without the keystone, meaning he could very well bypass that part of the temple itself

Now that I think about it, Jenova's "Sephiroths" is able to phase through walls and everything. He straight up rises through the ground to appear to the party on the boat to Costa del Sol. I'm not really sure how that could be explained in-world...

Honestly, you could save the world by showing Sephiroth his true mother - Lucrecia.

I think you’re looking for verisimilitude in a world that is very much still a gradual evolution of the sprite based 8-bit games that would portray a city as 5 buildings and characters as a bunch of colored pixels in a square. It relies on your imagination to fill in the blanks of the world and make it come to life within your mind. FF7 is a gradual evolution from that into realistic 3d environments with details. It has bathrooms, but it doesn’t have roads. By the next game in the series, FF8, the over world will have roads and railway between all major cities. The cities will be larger.

Could we use, like.... knowledge about the plot itself so we, knowing were it is, just destroy (or hide) the black materia without Sephiroth noticing? That could boost the safety aspect a bit!

I didn't really think about trying to hide/destroy the black materia 🤔 Where it is now, I'd say it's pretty well hidden. You couldn't obtain it if you were just by yourself, considering that you have to go INSIDE the temple of the ancients to activate a mechanism, which shrinks down the temple to become the black materia itself. It's not a big deal in the game because they have Cait Sith, a robot, do it. He comes back almost immediately in a new body after the previous one was destroyed. I'm not sure how some random schmuck would activate the mechanism without dying. I guess you could pay someone else to do it and not tell them that they're gonna die lol. Maybe it's just because I've been thinking about the movies a lot lately, but I kinda think of this like Lord of the Rings. Sephiroth, like Sauron, will be around for a while. I bet even if you did find a way to get the black materia and bury it deep in the ground somewhere, he'd eventually find it. Though maybe you'd be able to delay his return until after you die, that's the most you could hope for I'd think Honestly, I still probably wouldn't change the rating. Just getting that far in the temple would be a nightmare for the average gamer untrained in combat. It COULD happen, but even getting to that point isn't very safe lol.

While I agree with your treatment for the world map, I think it would be funny to see the whole world shrink into a tiny space while traveling. I like this series a lot! Thanks for continuing it!

So I think when you mentioned not seeing much in the way of farms and transport on the overworld map in game, i feel its safe to assume those exist, for the same reason that we dont see monsters on the map but given that we battle them its happening. It stands to reason that people dont live completely statically and there are likely other parties, smaller villages, etc that we pass through on the map. We also know other groups move through the map like shinra forces yet again, we dont see them. Given also that youve granted some level of sentience to the beings in the world as well you can no longer think of them as npcs that stay routed to one spot, building, town, etc. Many of them talk of journeys themselves, many of them may be currently on one. So ai think its safe to say the world would be far busier than the game visualizes, and it even somewhat represents that through story and dialogue

a really good reference for how it would be to live in Midgar as an average person would be the short story "The Kids are alright" which i think was written by Nojima himself.

I read that before Remake came out! I also read Traces of Two Pasts, which shows Tifa and Aerith's lives in Midgar before Cloud shows up. Honestly, I could have pulled more from those, but I kinda liked to talk about the world as we see it on screen. Once you start pulling from books and all that, it gets a lot less restrictive, so less interesting in my eyes. But they are great books! I recommend them to any FF7 fan, as well as On the Way to a Smile.

I mean. Even with cloud gone that just means things would play out in a different way. You logic it out like reading half a script. Truth is the whole script would be rewritten. So there is no way to know what forces or events would or wouldn't lead to meteor being summoned. This isn't really an argument against the safety rating, just that there's no way to know nothing would stop meteor.

Your food rating makes sense. When was the last time you saw a cattle carrier or slaughterhouse irl?

5:13 I like to think they get food from materia, mako, and other energy sources. Just west of the golden saucer is a place that propsered, for a time, under shinra... But then it was burnt up, to the ground, and the people live in poverty now... despite that they have working electricity; and where there's electricity, logically, there's food that can be made out of that electricity. I mean, some of the ice cream in wall street is, quote, "literally made from materia"

An interesting videogame serie to explore would be the pokemon serie: each region could likely have ups and downs. Or you could take it as a whole to increase the danger level. (With having to choose if take pokedex entries literally or not)

I prefer just assuming that supply chains exist for the food. If I'm being honest, I prefer a slightly less literal interpretation of the games in general though. I think I'd choose to live in Cosmo Canyon, but maybe Kalm?

The world exists in a dual state. The CG cutscenes, and then the playable world. Anyway, I would give any game with random encounters (and especially a medium-high encounter rate) a 0/5 for traversability and 0/5 for safety. You would basically have to get good at fighting, or always have to travel with people that are. And keep in mind Cloud is juiced up on cells and the rest of his party is pretty much some form of extremely talented at combat or magic (sometimes both). If you travel to the wrong part of the world map on accident, say hello to end level enemies that could probably wipe out towns on their own. This is on top of the fact that it would take forever to get anywhere.

Kalm is definitely one of the towns I'd pick to stay in. Compared to the one I picked at the end, it seems like a much bigger town. The way the camera is angled definitely implies a lot more buildings within the city. Seems like a super chill and easy life.

Oh hell yeah I've been loving this series

I think that if resources renew and don't run out over the course of the game, you can assume that they have a supply chain going that would last as long as the business is open. Disclaimer, I've never played FF7, but if for example you go to the tavern and the food is always available and there's not a limit on how much food you can buy throughout the game, I'd assume they have a good supply chain. Some games only allow you to buy like 7 cakes or whatever from a shop throughout the course of the whole game and then that shop will never have cakes again. That's when I'd assume you'd eventually run out of resources through shops if you lived in that world.

If there are eating establishments and shops selling food, but no diegetically visible supply chain, you should assume food availability to the businesses, but disallow the player from accessing the hypothetical supply chain. They must patronize the businesses, and do not have the option to find food off the grid.

Yea definitely is impossible to survive if you replace the main character. I mean if you just do happen to end up in the world while cloud does his thing then maybe you have a better chance at surviving and even thrive. Unlike Zelda where an average Joe replaces link then Gannon can’t get the ocarina to open the temple and thus can’t win, this has the opposite effect where if the hero doesn’t do anything then everyone dies.

I was recommended this channel and I can’t stop watching.

For food, I’m going to say assume the infrastructure is there unless the game itself gives clear evidence to the contrary, like when Hyrule town is destroyed in OOT, you may be able to find SOME food that survived the assault, but after you take it, that’s it. It ain’t coming back, the town has been abandoned save one ghostly man wanting poes in bottles, which while link can “drink” … it’s not advised.

What about the post apocalipse that is megaman, do legends since it's the only game that shows people living in that world, you'll be the only true human in a world made for cyborgs

Best way to stop sepheroph, make a gun and shoot him, i would think being hit by a rock flying at the speed of sound wouldnt do damage like how magic does, but would instead fly clean through the skull

Second comment but I think if you ever have a situation where you struggle to make a judgement call based on whether a specific gamey factor could be handled (like the food supply in the towns), you could provide a 0.5 bonus/penalty to whatever score you're giving them, depending on whether that potential abstraction would benefit or penalize the score you'd give

Pikmin would be interesting, given its survival aspect! Olimar even likes to provide scientific data on the wildlife. Pikmin 2 or 4 could be especially interesting, as Louie provides flavor info about how to cook the various flora and fauna found there. ​@@PretzelYT

@@PretzelYT in Pikmin 1, the limiting factor of the game is that after 30 days, Olimar’s suit won’t be able to scrub the toxic atmosphere anymore… of that toxic oxygen. And in Pikmin 3, the limiting factor is the presence of food, as giant fruit is manufactured into fruit juice to enable the expedition to continue.

Should do one on these games also: runescape, wow, minecraft, ff10, ff14, pokemon, zelda botw and totk (separately since the overworlds population changes in totk), pikmin, Mario sunshine (can't think of any other Mario games off the top of my head with a somewhat open world), skyrim, oblivion, morrowind, teso (the elders scrolls online), Diablo 2-4, soul soulreaver 1/2, baldurs gate, elder rings, darksouls, aion, conquer online, overlord 1/2, psychonauts, dark cloud 1/2, summoner 1/2, metroid prime, valheim, pal world, assassins creed black flag, zelda windwaker (basically any zelda game now that I think about it), kh1-3. Can't think of any others off the top of my head within 10 minutes of thinking.

So far, we've seen a lot of large, open worlds with a wide variety of environments, with mostly realistic biomes. But I think it would be a fun challenge to see what it would be like to try to survive in an arcade or puzzle game with either one or a handful of different "environments," with abstract landscapes and little detail. Think Space Invaders, or Pac-Man, or Tetris. Would survivability there even be feasible?

If you do nothing as Cloud, the world never ends. Shinra sucking up lifestream could be an issue but we do ok without lifestream in our time on earth, so I don't see how Bugenhagen is right about the planet dying without it. (It's earth in the future as we know from the fighter jet dug up upon bone village, and the named planets in seph's attack)

Rebirth kinda makes the world of FF7 feel a lot more liveable

I'd say your assumption that the supply chain continues working however it's working is a fair one and definitely the right call. As you laid out in the rules, the game world is still the game world that we see presented. In the FF7 that we play, restaurants have food despite no evidence of a source. Some reasonable boundaries are needed to actually imagine the world as one you might live in, but I think it'd have been out of the spirit of this series to subjectively fill in a detail in a way where something that worked in the game no longer does, and then use it to justify docking the game's score.

I think food water and shelter get knocked down a point by the fact you have to pay for them. I'm not going in with money, which means I need to earn some before I can sleep or eat.

How would you survive something like Minecraft? Sure the game is all about survival but Steve is very much not normal if he can just mine the hardest materials without even leaving a scratch on himself. Along with just healing up from the smallest sliver of health (for him he could have been loosing limbs or having large holes in the body, and just heal it by eating bread). Even if it isn't that graphic and at most you get bruises What version you appear in could also heavily dictate your survivability. And just the aspect of travel steve can go forever without sleep and only a little food

I think it might be worth splitting safety into two categories: ambient and narrative. Ambient would cover the day-to-day threats in the form of monsters, traversal issues, etc, and narrative would cover the villain’s evil plan, or whatever other story events would affect safety. The main reason for this is that I’d like to see you sink your teeth more into how a human would grapple with the smaller threats. I feel like right now, you’re letting those small issues get summarized into “yeah that’s not a big deal” not because they’d be uninteresting to talk about but because the plot of the game makes them moot. Dig into both things. Remember, the series is ostensibly about the worlds of these video games, which I personally think doesn’t assume any particular temporal placement apart from the human replacing the player character at the point of outset. If that’s meant as a baked-in part of the challenge, sure, but if it’s meant more as just a way to get the viewers of the video immersed in the concept of living in a game world, it might be leading you to put too much emphasis on the plot. Regardless of all of this, I adore these videos and hope to see many more. As a final note, Sephiroth would never make the world less safe. His ultimate goal is to become Safer.

I think if we're going with the logic of jumping INTO the videogame itself, then information obtained outside of the videogame shouldn't be applicable, even stuff like the manual or guides. Afterall, if the videogame exists as presented, then it's not fair to assume other things work differently than how they're presented. Just bringing it up in relation to using the Crisis Core complete guide, though admittedly that's a minor point given it's literally called a water tower.

How can you possibly justify having Sephiroth threaten the Earth without having Cloud there to save it? Also, you missed the point. You wouldn't have to worry about Sephiroth since he's kind of an easy story plot point. The real problem... The black materia exists. Any idiot can use it and accidentally awaken the Weapons but not necessarily be able to cast meteor. In addition, the Weapons are roused by Shines using so much Mako from the Earth which is stated that if they were to take enough, the Weapons also would've woken up and destroyed anything that used Mako and any Mako reserves which would've destroyed not only the energy source but also would've cut or even destroyed a major aspect of self defense. Those weapons are part of the nature of the world while Sephiroth isn't necessarily part of the world.
