Johnny sounds like an excellent and safe captain. Beautiful boat! Bon Voyage for their Great Loop adventure. We have a 30 foot Bayliner with flybridge and a nice cabin that gets a bit cramped with more than two adults during overnight trips. We've taken several week-long trips over the years, and many of the considerations are the same as RV boondocking: managing electrical power, drinking water, and toilet waste. Your RV experiences are a good segue into boating. Your kids will enjoy it. We are getting into RVing in 2022 and we'll keep the boat as well. Your channel is a great resource to learn about RVing.

I don’t think this is too small with two preteen kids. The rear canvas can be enclosed and it becomes a tent for the kids. So long as you make stops regularly on the longer trips I think you’ll be fine. Unfortunately many folks get caught up in size and speed when it comes to boats and an efficiently set up smaller boat, especially a trawler, can be more travel-worthy than the big boys.

Hi there! A very interesting prospect that you've proposed! I have a soft spot for boats, so I'd consider this kind of option in a heart beat. My first job was as a barnacle scraper for boats when I was in 10th grade. We were living in Panama. I'd scrape barnacles off of boats that were docked at the yacht club. It was a very scientific process.......while skin diving, take a big breath, and go under for a minute to scrape. Come up for air...repeat. I'd be lashed to a rope so as to not have to fight any of the currents. Of course, I'd try to work with the owners to do their boats more often than not so that their boats weren't totally covered with mature barnacles. Another boat story....my career manager in the army called me up back in the middle 2000s. He commented that I'd been at the same duty station for 5 years and probably should look at moving. I told him to give me a month and let me take my wife down to Tampa to show her that area. The other concept is that we'd maybe live on a boat while there. So, we set up tours of a 40ft monohull sailboat, a catamaran, and a power boat. The 2 sailboats were about 40ft....and I guess the powerboat was like 35ish feet. After touring all 3 types, she said she liked the monohull the best as the below living area was the biggest. Just for giggles, I also took her to a neighborhood that many of my former coworkers lived in. For the same price as a relatively new sail boat, we could get a 2500 sq ft house, with a screened in pool. The boat option sank immediately hehehehe. But....I ended up beginning another deployment cycle again and never had to move. This kind of option that you are looking it is sooooo doable. Wow...it would open up a new perspective for your family. Of course, though, there are still 1000s of things for you all to see in your rv! Maybe look to get another year or two of land travels under you belt while concurrently planning a transition to water?? Safe travels!!

Great story Alan! Amazing how powerful the draw of a big comfortable house is to many, isn't it?. And I can't think of a better job to condition a 10th grader to being resilient and building a strong work ethic. We agree, there's more to see by land before transitioning into anything different. Rose grew up with a sail boat and I grew up spending time on friends boats, so we both feel a connection. Nonetheless, we like having options and pondering the "what if's" of many different lifestyles. But alas, we're really just getting started... wishing you well.

As you know, I love boats. There are a lot of similarities between boats and RVs. With sailboats you do have to consider wind a bit differently from motorboating. And if you have a tall mast, going under some bridges can be an issue. The small sailboat I have uses a centerboard rather than a fixed keel. She's small, and needs ~3.5 feet of water when the centerboard is down, 18 inches when it's up. I do have an outboard for it so I can use that as needed. I'm very much a pleasure boat sailor at this point, especially when I'm the captain. I recommend taking the boating course the US Coast Guard offers to give you a good overview. I took it before I got my boat and found it really helpful. It provided an overview of things I'd need to consider. I'd also suggest learning to tie knots. There are hundreds of them, but knowing how to tie five or six key ones can be infinitely helpful. They have their uses on land and sea.

Here's a thought for you to digest: Boats are like magic carpets and - literally - can take you anywhere in the world. We've wintered in London, Lisbon, Malta, Trinidad and Brisbane, among other places, because we took the risk to learn how to 'RV' on the water. A much broader, for kids richer, experience than what our Lance trailer can offer.

Sure it’s doable but it would be to cramped on a 27 with two growing kids. I think a 47”-57” footer would be more realistic.

It would be fun. But it would be cost prohibitive on our budget. That said, we haven't met a boat we didn't like.

Seems really tight for that many people for longer term.

This is something I really considered at some point. Though it would be a sailing catamaran. Once looking into the expenditure though, I concluded that camping full time was expensive enough.

Yes, something tells me that life on the water would be financially amplified to say the least. It's fun to ponder though. All that said, it wouldn't be nice to learn and practice the skill sets required. Stay well.

@@ResetYourJourney Yeah. Absolutely. There are other sailing families around that will often take guests for passages of a few days. And there are programs available to enroll in such lists. Though I don't know where to start. But it would be the next best thing i am pretty sure. This is something I would have leapt all over as an early 20's traveler. But never thought of to try at the time.

That's really good insight and sounds like fun. Something to keep in mind for sure before considering such a change of adventure.

I was wondering, with this boat on saltwater, what is the maintenance? Do you take it out once a year to scrub hall, check propeller? I wouldn't mind living on one in Florida. Just come in to port to restock food, water and gas.

The exact same can be said for our travel trailer. It's 23' on the interior and it's totally fine for the four of us. In face, we love how agile it is since it's small. So we agree with everything you've stated. After 2 years of traveling the country in an RV, a boat would be a nice change. We'll see where the next chapter takes us. Wishing you well!
