I used to think that, and that the world was doomed to be overpopulated. But in history, in both america and Britain for example, our populations boomed with technological advancements. Our economies grew and stabilized, as did the population growth rates. This is seen in almost all similar countries. Theres a name for the phenomena but idk it. Basically, third world countries are 100-200 years behind in certain terms, and are just now going through what we went through with the industrial revolution.

Global birthrates are already at roughly replacement rates on average. The problem is a change in birth rate's full consequences lag their cause by about 70 years. Our present situation is due to conditions in 1940-1950. The 2060-70 situation will be the consequences of the situation around 2000, after having removed the people born from about 1940 to 1990 from the picture. There are less older people because there were less younger people in the past. Our population isn't growing because of birth rates being above replacement as such. It's growing because relative to the size of our current younger generation, a decent chunk of the older generation is 'missing'. ... Because they were born in a different era where the global population was smaller, but birth rates were high. We are now in an era where global child population is stable, but the number of children is higher than it was. Thus, we are waiting for the proportional number of elderly people to catch up with the proportional number of younger people. Think about this: If 31.5 million children are born a year. (current birth rate, roughly) and they all live exactly 70 years, and we start from nothing (impossible, but let's assume that anyway...) Nobody dies to accident or disease. No variation in when people die. Everyone that's born lives 70 years. How big will the population be over time? Remember, this situation I just described is technically a neutral birth rate! (same number of people die as are born.) Well... Let's see: (numbers are millions of people.) Year 1: 31.5 million people Year 2: 31.5 + 31.5 million people. (63 million) Year 3: 94.5 million Year 4: 126 Year 5: 157.5 ... Year 10: 315 million. Year 20: 630 million Year 30: 945 million Year 50: 1,575 million. (1.5 billion) Year 70: 2,205 million. So far, things have been growing steadily, even though deaths = births, by definition in this example. But now see what happens next: Year 71: 2,205 million alive. 31.5 million are born. 31.5 million die. = no growth. Year 72: 2,205 million Year 73: 2,205 million etc. So why is the population going to hit 10 billion in 2050? ... Not because Births > Deaths But because we are currently in something that resembles year 10 or 20 of my example, NOT years 70+ The consequences simply haven't caught up with us yet, because deaths happen many years after births do. (Thus, we are 'missing'. about half of all the people over 30 that should exist based on how many children there were around the year 2000.... Technically that means the birth rate exceeds the death rate. But only until the people currently in their 30's die. Then things will stabilise. - assuming no other changes to birth or death rates.)

The best method is to eliminate/lower poverty in impoverished countries and make people busy with finishing higher education, more advanced/time consuming jobs, well paid jobs. We aren't even particularly over consuming. Just wasteful - stores or farms alone discard insane amounts of goods. Over packing stuff, planned obsolescence, poor distribution, limited investment in technologies for lab grown meat, alternative fuels, energy and food production. We still use heavily polluting materials for basic stuff (batteries - heavy metals, old nuclear power waste, oil, coal for example)

Also, huge numbers of people have objections to all methods of birth control, so as a pro-lifer, I have no objections to people having so incredibly many children. Babies happen, and humans are supposed to multiply naturally without birth control to hinder our progress. BTW, I do not believe in government welfare, but rather, charity should be voluntary and by organizations and from people who wish to give. And we can get our "free" education via home schooling or internet schooling. Abolish the unjust property and income taxes, and allow parents to use the money that they save once those bad unjust taxes are abolished, to pay tuition to the school of their choice. Or home-school or charity-school or internet-school.

It's indeed selfish to have 6 or more children per family. If those 6 kids eventually have 6 kids too, than there would be 36 people in the next generation. That's so not going to work to decrease population growth. When continuing doing the math I even have to conclude that it's selfish to have 2 or more children per family. As the counter still will go up if the next generation continues in the same pattern. This is why I understand China and it's drastic measures. The way they did it and are still doing it isn't very compassionate but they knew something needed to be done. If they would have done nothing, the Chinese population would have gone through even a bigger hell. Based on the actions of human kind, I have the impression people seem to be mostly short-term "happiness" thinkers and consider the long-term future as less important. @Jesse Mitchell Yes, I know, the world population is beautiful blossoming in its size, like some preparation for something great. But which of all these people are unnecessary? Can we get rid of India and China, so that we can have some more room to grow? Maybe your family-tribe can be smaller, so that mine can be bigger? What is to be accomplished via such non-productive fake-science "overpopulation" bickering? We had to double, because so many people apparently want babies and to grow their families. Some family planning pusher warned some African village, that at their current rate, they would double in 25 years. To which they all started clapping. Oops, somebody forgot to explain to them, why certain educated idiots in the West, consider such natural growth to be "bad" for some reason. You think that village elders do not realize that the village is growing bigger, and that neighboring villages are doing the same, and the distance between the cities and towns, is slowly and steadily shrinking, and that each year, there is more and more people in the country? Where are all these people coming from? Well if the neighbors are friendly, then what really is the problem? People naturally think that their rising population is probably good, or at least inevitable. The income tax is unjust, and tax refunds are deserved, because the people were overcharged and had too much money withheld. And there are numerous ways of looking at it, if you really think that some tiny tax credit for having more children, somehow encourages more childbearing, then it perhaps is a "quantity discount" for bringing many more "future taxpayers into the world". Or the government pretending to be somewhat family-friendly. And if she won't work, then why is she paying taxes? Isn't being a Mom serious work? I agree that we should not have to pay for other people's children, however, many large families are about as self-sufficient as anybody else. A lot of people obviously do not believe in pulling out, and many people actually do appear to want possibly big families. Humans were designed to reproduce naturally, without using any means of birth control. Do you deny that?

As people become satisfied that their basic needs are going to be met, they start having fewer children, and in some areas, the population growth rate has even gone negative. The key to doing this, which was not even touched on, is by increasing the quality of life for most everyone on the plant - partly by conserving resources and partly by smart planning and partly by increasing the carrying capacity. In the short term, family planning and contraceptives are also key technologies. BBC, you fell flat on your face on this one.

When you look in the mirror, why aren't you disgusted with yourself? Did you read the part where I wrote that some ugly alien could pick you up and squash you like a bug? And it wouldn't even take much pressure. You are not even strong enough to lift a car. Some babies are walking in just a year. And in fact, I think babies could walk a little sooner. If we would let them. But what happens? Baby falls down and cries, and so we pick up our baby and comfort him or her. We in effect tell our babies, "It is okay, you do not have to walk today." I have a theory that if a baby has enough strength, and somehow became determined enough, he or she could say to him or herself, "I will walk today. I see other people doing it, I can do it also." And the baby will not accept no for an answer. Fall down, get up, fall down, get up and walk again, try try and try again, walking today. But that doesn't so much get at the point you are making about why a baby isn't walking the same day as his or her birth. For one thing, babies have over-sized heads, and their muscles are too weak to support its weight. In the womb, where the baby was floating, it did not take so much effort. Muscles are not going to become strong in just 1 day. It takes some time. But you are conveniently ignoring my point, that it appears to be *BY DESIGN* that human babies are weak. For a purpose.

When America can use only 3% of its population for agriculture to supply 10 times more food then we could ever hope to eat, topped off with 1st world country habits of having a lower birth rate in the country then the recommended country population resupply birth rate recommendations, so such a degree that even Japan has a "Virgin Crises" where not enough people are being born to replace the aging population, while 3rd world countries that are the source of massive population gains these days turn first world and start to have their birth rates decline slowly as well, in conjunction with their ever improving healthcare and food production, what you are going to actually see is a sort of anti-overpopulation self control that takes place without willful human intervention. Government interference in the bedroom really is unnecessary. If resources are such a huge deal when it comes to the older generations, then start by giving them solar panels. Their generation also had a lot stronger focus on self sufficiency, so help them with a food based greenhouse as well since a lot of them are in fact veggy garden savvy and place a lot of importance on the taste of fresh food. and if water is the final issue, then you shouldn't have any problems making huge Distillation style Desalination plants pumping massive amounts of newly freshed water from the sea. Don't give me the "Desalination is expensive" argument, Distillation is about boiling water to the point of turning it into vapor and that can still be an easy method done in mass to desalinate fresh water out of salt water. Any left over minerals from this can be caught in a gridded mesh and moved out of the distillation tank to harvest the minerals collected on the metal grids. On top of that, one of these days, enough people are going to get fet-up with drout situations, where people are going to demand government projects that do pipe billions of gallons of desalinized sea water up threw the country, so eventually some government agency at some point in time is going to finally pay the expanse to make massive desalination plants that can pump billions of gallons of freshwater desalinized from the ocean, even if the only option is to use a distillation method using giant containers that used Osmium Alloys to make. Help 3rd world nations become first world nations and their birth rates will decline simply as a matter of 1st world nation habits. Refocus more effort on renewable energy and resources. The old folks wanted to retire in comfort without anything to worry about, so let them not have to worry about power, water and food by letting them have those renewable abilities. They can't be a drain on resources, if they are not consuming them, right? How can they consume precious limited resources, if they have their own renewing cycle of resources?

Whenever people start talking about "overpopulation" the first thing they do is start talking about how to "reduce the global birth rate" or how to kill people. The thing is, people in the US and Europe use *far* more resources than the people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America do. The solution isn't limiting or killing the people in these places since they're barely contributing to the problem in the first place. It's not even about reducing the population in Europe and America. It's about reducing their consumption and not being so incredibly wasteful and inefficient. Americans throw away more than half of the food they purchase. Americans have more empty homes than homeless people. The problem is not one of abundance, but of distribution.

Little things like this are a waste that not enough people are addressing for it to changeI've had the same Samsung S6 for ages now, doesn't always work at its best performance but this is my own fault, and there's no need to buy a new one for a curved screen, that's just greed for the sake of being trendy...

Now this is something I can get behind! And if we are less meat (no I'm not telling everyone to go vegan, hear me out) we would have more space to grow crops for human consumption and we could possibly give some of that away to countries in need.

We already discard wast amounts of crops. Just having more land wont change that. Also most farmed animals take little farmable land fit for growing quality human food - the soil can only grow basic grass for example - and with all the anti GMO hate, you cannot even engineer crops to grow there.

Much of that waste isn't people at home wasting food. Throwing out food because it's spoiled or you made too much or something is maybe a few percent of total wastage. The bulk of the problem is the retailers, and our buying habits. It's shops being extremely fussy about what they'll sell. Apples that aren't shiny enough get dumped. Bananas that are too curved or too straight get tossed. Vegetables that are forked get tossed. And of course, rather than give this 'unsellable' food away to people who are going hungry, it gets dumped somewhere and left to rot. It's ridiculous. Including waste we grow food for about 12 billion people. Not CAN. we ARE growing that much food. And that's including the inefficiencies of meat production. (It's not as simple by the way as saying less meat means being able to grow more crops. At least some fraction of meat production is done using grazing land that cannot sustain crops. - but it's not enough for current demand. Such land use is maybe 25% or less of meat production.) If we grow food for 12 billion, have a world population of 7 billion. (or is it 8 now?) yet 2 billion are starving, that means somewhere along the way enough food is currently wasted to feed 7 billion people!

Stop rewarding people for having more children. Reward people for having less. Taxes. People who get welfare know as do immigrants that if you keep having a child every few years you get more welfare money and food stamps, it doesn't matter if they are on drugs. This should be changed.

What about all the flora and fauna on this planet? If mankind leaves behind a barren earth and goes off into space to seek new frontiers will animals be taken along too? Or will they be eaten before that? What will this planet look like when there is no more wildlife left? When there will only be humans and livestock.

Simple government policy change. Make all childcare, medical bills and education free for the firstborn child in addition to generous income tax breaks for the parents. But make the policy increasingly less accommodating for subsequent offspring. Additionally ban immigration from countries that don' t adopt the policy.

I think the topic of this video was off. A much more interesting question is, are we using up earth's resources too quickly and is there enough to go around? Personally I find the threat of overpopulation a dubious one, because it's not even a threat unless you can answer the aforementioned question.

@@johngrosser4179 Your promise to whom? Nature hardly needs for you to keep your family size "under control". The Bible says to take responsibility for our families/children, but does not expect us to try to somehow limit them. If you had 6 children, I am fine with that, because I am pro-life and I am very much against population control. The world has 8 billion people they claim, why does anybody think that a few more children is going to hurt anything? Every human life is of immense value and sacred, thus we are obliged to find or make room for everybody, now matter how many that God may allow. Most people laugh at or ignore enviro-wacko "stop at 2" nonsense. Not realistic and contrary to human rights and dignity. Sure, "artificial" methods have bad side-effects. I accept readily arguments against "artificial" methods. But I do not advocate natural methods either. Sure, the world balks, too much self-control needed. Having naturally-big families still is a proper and natural option, and God commands people to multiply. Also means as I see it, gives us permission to. Ultra-orthodox Jews tend to have big families, because they take very seriously Genesis 38 where Onan spilling his seed went badly for him. I largely agree with this pro-life view, best to allow babies to happen and not to spill our seed. Marriage first, then babies. Living healthy should include not polluting our bodies with nasty harsh contraceptives, also respecting our natural reproductive rhythms and welcoming our children to come to life as they may or as God allows. Our ancestors allowed for babies to conceive and generally did not try to prevent it. Sex is supposed to be for procreation. Quite many people believe that the very real prospect of pregnancy or yet another pregnancy should be allowed for, so that sex is not profaned into but a selfish and carnal act. I believe this also and count it among my many objections against birth control. Also, birth control is contrary to nature and quite awkward. I am for only male circumcision as that is biblical, and according to a friend of my Dad's as he told me, circumcised as an adult, it enhances sensation. That would seem to be good. Oral sex seems wrong, because it is contrary to procreation. The human seed is supposed to go to where babies can happen, and sex is for _married_ couples, as was accepted before the rampant contraceptive pushing promoting irresponsibility. Also, why have that around teeth? Seems like a very bad idea. Only but the one reproductive orifice is designed to receive the male organ. I reject the "family planning" anti-family propaganda, which was hugely based upon fake-science racism and eugenics and pushed by filthy-rich evil elitists. Historically, naturally, biblically, humans seem designed to multiply naturally, and it is best to let God determine our family size.
