Could this be THE Best Lens for Dog Photography in 2020?! (I think so)

I LOVE this lens! I think I've found the best lens for dog photography in the world right now! Ok, so I caved and purchased a lens I've been looking at for a while, which may or may not have gone back on a statement I made in a previous video 🙈 It's time for me to introduce this dog photography lens now that I've put it through its paces, and share the why, the where, the how and some actual work taken with it. PS, there are a couple of horses in this video.
Will you be adding it to your wish list?

    Wow! Such a gorgeous effect from that 105mm. On a side note, what are your thoughts/knowledge on the Tamron SP 70-200 mm, f2.8? It’s the one I currently have. Is the one you have from Sony that much better or similar? I guess what I’m ultimately asking is whether it is worth continuing with that lens if I want to work professionally. Thanks for your response. :)

    Tossed between up Sony 70-200mm f/4 and Tamron 28-75mm for my full frame and APSC Sony mirrorless cameras... Your dog photos are absolutely lovely I also like the rendition achieved when use my Legacy Meyer Gorlitz 135mm f/2.8 lens (originally for a Pentacon camera) on a Sony crop camera adapted with a Kipon Focal Reducer which provides an equivalent 141mm f/2.0. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but, the rendition is beautiful. I don't use this for fast moving subjects but, I love it for still outdoor portraits of dogs. I would like to try the 70-180mm f/2.8 Tamron but, I have not had the opportunity... I do like the animal eye auto focus capability of the later Sony morrorless cameras.

I’ve been watching your videos and I’d love to be able to take professional pictures of my dogs but I don’t know where to start lol, I’m dyslexic so I’m having a real problem understanding camera settings shooting in automatic mode or program but I’m trying my best to shoot in manual. I have seen so many videos but I really don’t get a real good friend with the lens, I don’t get those sharp dog photos that I want. Maybe one of 20 pictures is ok. Love your videos! One minor correction - 2.8/2=1.4 is not doubling, but quadrupling your light. Your calculation computes double of the radius/diameter of the lens and since the formula for lens area is Pi*r^2, that's four times the light or TWO stops. Next f-stop from 2.8 is 2, then 1.4. Similarly, f/4 is half the light from f/2.8, not f/5.6 that your calculation would have suggested. To correctly calculate going down a stop, you should divide by Sqrt(2) or 1.4, not by 2. Also, an important notice to all who shoot crop sensor cameras - not only should the focal length be multiplied by 1.5-1.6 depending on the APS-C brand, but also aperture. So if someone is shooting 105mm f/1.4 on a Canon APS-C (crop of 1.62x), they're effectively shooting a full-frame equivalent of 170mm f/2.27. One huge benefit of full frames and medium format cameras - a 1.4 aperture is truly 1.4. Bigger sensor surface area - more light. The disadvantage is that 105mm is 105mm and not 170. 🙂 P.S.: Sigma 105/1.4 is my absolute go-to lens! I love everything about it!

    I am really enjoying your videos as I am working on photographing dogs. I rented this lens and received it yesterday but my photos looks so grainy/noisy compared to my 70-200. I didn't know if it's just because I am not used to the lens or if there is something wrong with it. Do you have any ideas on why this could be? I can't find anything on it when I google it and I don't know anyone that has it to ask them. Thanks! And again, the videos are great! I did follow your advice on another video to a viewer that was having a hard time following you to slow down the speed and put subtitles up, that was very helpful! lol

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    @ThatPhotographySpot

    3 жыл бұрын

    You should not see any difference in grain from lens to lens, as noise is a sensor thing, not a lens thing. It could be that the image quality of this lens is higher, and therefore noise is more noticeable, but I would test both lenses in the same light conditions, on the same settings, before making a judgement on that!

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    The F2.8 is fine, we use that more than anything else! If you're using a 24-70mm lens, you won't get the same image as you would with a 100mm lens. So we'd suggest looking at a 70-200 2.8.

    Hi, stunning work. I too like my 70 to 200mm for my doggy portraits. As a Nikon user I use the Tamron 70-200 vc usd. Also we're lucky I the fact Nikon do a 105 f 1.4g. Weighs in at 989g and 82mm filter thread. My only concern is the dept of field. I find I have to shoot wider and crop the image, otherwise the pooches eyes are tack sharp and nose is out of focus. Then you have to stop down to 2 and 2.8 anyway. Maybe I'll have to go to a crop sensor so it naturally pulls you away further from subject to increase depth of field in order to utilize lower stop value in woody shots.

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    A 50mm is the most affordable prime out there and as you have a cropped sensor camera, a 50mm is actually a 75mm I think, so this would be great for you 🤓

    The only lens that competes for my money is the Samyang AF 135mm f1.8 - I would never have believed it myself, until I saw a review! It's a hell of a lot lighter and cheaper, and I swear it's as beautiful as the Sigma - pin-sharp wide open, and the extra length negates the aperture difference. If they made them for Nikon I would buy one for sure!

    Just checked your 'Stops video' and you make the same mistake you make in this one at 3:15. If you go from F/2.8 to F/1.4 it will be two stops brighter, not one. F/2.0 is one stop brighter. It's one of those areas in photography where things follow a squared nature. If you half the F-stop number on the lens, you would double the aperture's DIAMETER. The AREA of the aperture would now be 4x what it was, i.e. two stops brighter. To double the light you need the area to double, which would need the diameter to be multiplied by 1.4 (square root of 2). On your camera if it is set for third stops, it will take you six clicks to go from F/8 to F/4, that is two stops. (I edited this BTW Jess, I mixed up halves and doubles LOL).

    I'm going to need to read this 400 times to absorb it correctly - me and numbers are not friends. Ok, so do we square root to gain stops with aperture and square (or double?) to lose stops with aperture? I was always taught that it is double and halves, nothing regarding squares but I'm absolutely happy to be wrong (sadly, it won't please my number-phobic brain).

    I've now confused myself even more. Say we were at f4, gaining 1 stop would take us where?

  • @fx451Jockey

    @fx451Jockey

    @@ThatPhotographySpot To gain or lose a stop you multiply or divide by approximately 1.4. Take the sequence 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16. Each is 1.4x higher, each is one full stop. As you can see, 1.4 is two stops 'faster' than 2.8. 1.4 is approximately the square root of 2.

    Yes it's so hard. I think if you have a zoom lens, it's such a good idea to track what focal length you use most often. Everyone tends to have a preferred range and over a few different shoots you can narrow down options for the future 🤓

    Hi Scott, it could be that your device started in lower resolution then buffered up to higher resolution? As I tend to shoot all my videos at f2.8 with the Sony's Wide focus enabled, it will grab the closest object to the camera if it is held there for a while so at times it grabs my engagement ring as the highest area of focus, however, usually it does stay relatively reliably on my face?

    Zoom lenses are stupid in general and newer as good as the best Prime Lenses ! For dog portraits I can very highly recommend the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM on Sony A7RIV/A7RIVA !

    Do you mean never? As in "never as good"? It depends on what your priority is - if its IQ then yes a prime will usually win, but if its dollar or sales volume, the variety from a zoom in a pet session is a core factor in increased sales. The world is not black and white, nothing is stupid or not, good or bad, there are places for everything. We've done a 135 1.8 GM review, it's super but works best on an A9ii in our opinion. Have a fab day! 😊
